David First : Game Of Drones - An interview with a great contemporary composer - English + French Text - drone music/experimental music

It's not every day that one has the honour of interviewing a great contemporary and experimental musician: David First, like all great artists, has shown himself to be affable and available, enthusiastic, which for me is a renewed pleasure! Make the effort to discover, if you don't know it, David's music, full of drones, electronics, but also reggae, jazz, rock, psychedelism, with punk influences from the great era and, above all, an unfailing taste for music from all over the world, in complete freedom. Thank you David!

"I believe the only thing worth pursuing is the impossible. So I like to say as a kind of joke that “The reason I am an experimental composer because nothing has worked yet!" (David First)

David First drone music

Hello David, welcome to Le Scribe du Rock ! I am very honoured to interview you! Can you tell us in a few sentences who you are for the readers who don't know your work yet?

I am a composer/performer living in Brooklyn, NY. Much of my music explores trance-inducing spaces through acoustical phenomena, such as beating tones and sub tones. I most often work in the realm of microtonality and tuning systems that exist outside of the standard Western system of 12-equal temperament such as found on pianos, etc. I also work a lot with drones and long tones. Though I am probably mostly associated with the guitar, I have also released solo albums of harmonica and sitar, and play various small instruments such as slide whistles and jews harp, and both analog synthesizers and computer/software based instruments. These are all used to place a kind of microscope on the smallest elements of sound—through a set of procedures I refer to as Gestural Improvisation.

You have always conciliated a work focused on contemporary music, drones and interference beats, and another one in what we call "avant-rock" or rock avant-garde...I think in particular of your bands The Notekillers, with whom you started in the punk era (1977) and also the Joy Buzzers...can you tell us about your musical influences ? How did you find yourself in these different universes ?

I grew up in the psychedelic 60s and the earliest influences on my music came from listening to the rock bands of that era such as the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Syd Barrett version of Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, the Mothers of Invention, and many others. These were the bands that were exploring extended forms, non-Western influences, and new, often electronic sound possibilities. I also fell under the heavy influence of acoustic players such as Sandy Bull and John Fahey and blues musicians such as Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, and John Lee Hooker. All of these people led me to exploring music outside of Western pop/rock music, including various forms of Indian music, African music, as Balinese, Korean, as well as certain important players of jazz such as John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and the compositions and writings of composers like John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Another less obvious, perhaps, but important influence on the Notekillers was the funk music of James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic, and early Kool and the Gang. It was always my goal to achieve a kind of synthesis of all of these influences, but without losing my sense of spirit energy that I developed as a teenage rock and roller.

The Notekillers David First Art RockCan you tell us how punk music has marked you ?

By the early 70s I had pretty much left behind my original rock heroes who had mostly either died, had their bands break up, or ended their deep explorations. I stopped listening to song-based music altogether and was listening only to more abstract forms such as free-jazz and avant-classical music and electronic music. But then I discovered reggae music and I fell in love with it. Here was a music that was song-based but with a true sense of purpose AND a serious hypnotic power to it. Many of the great later innovations in audio production have their roots in reggae and with it, my belief in the possibility of song-form returned. This also became true to a certain extent with the establishment of punk rock. I began to re-establish my relationship with shorter, formal structures with the Notekillers during this time, with idea of also infusing our sound with everything else I had done prior, which included at this point a performance in pianist Cecil Taylor’s large ensemble and studying analog synthesis on a Buchla 100 at Princeton University. Punk rock was an amazing resetting back to the elemental roots of rock music, and a re-examination of the idea of performance and the necessary skills involved in playing music. Also, most importantly, it expanded the roles of women and people of color in the music, as, for the first time there was a large inclusion of non-white males in bands. It was a very significant time, but, of course, I had already been playing music for a dozen years at that point. So for me, it was, for sure, a type of inspiration and even influence, but it was not what motivated me to begin playing music for the first time as it was for so many others.

To talk about your actuality, you released this year The Consummation Of Right And Wrong with The Western Enisphere...A work whose theme revolves around science and shamanism...Can you tell us more about it, both musically and thematically ? Critics have spoken about this album as a "drone manifesto"...does it suit you?

Sure, I have no problem with that description. The title is a reference to the fact that it was my attempt to examine and then demonstrate the many possible ways one could combine opposites—melody with no melody, Acoustic instruments with computer sounds. Pulsing rhythm with free-flow, improvisation with completely notated composition, intuitive spontaneity and intellectual calculations, etc. And all with drones of various densities and durations. It was almost a way to prove that inspired players—in this case, my ensemble, The Western Enisphere—can make music out of anything they are given. It’s not exactly true, of course, but that is what alchemy is all about—taking mundane materials and converting them into something of great value through magic. I believe very strongly that magic is the only thing that is worth understanding and that the impossible is the only thing worth pursuing. Everything else is just more stuff—more art, more product, more things, more pollution of our senses and our environment. I’m not saying I have all the answers, but I’m trying my best to ask the right questions.

This year also saw the release of The Best We can by New Party Systems, an interpretation of songs you wrote in a more accessible register, we could even say pop/jazzy...Can you tell us about this album in particular?

Well, maybe once every ten years or so, I am inspired to do something musically that has a more clear and obvious social, even political, connection with society. These inspirations are quite often due to something happening in the world that everyone recognizes as significant. I lived two blocks from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan the day of, and the weeks and months after, 9/11, for example, and I wrote a song about the toughness of New Yorkers that I burned to CDRs and gave out all over the city for a few months after. I wrote a song during the Occupy Wall Street movement that featured Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio and two members of the black metal band Liturgy that became an anthem to many in the movement. This most recent album, That Best We Can, was inspired by both the Covid pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. The idea came to me in a dream I had the spring of 2020 in which it was after all problems had been solved—no more pandemic and everyone respected and appreciated everyone else. I was performing with singers this heavenly music of celebration I had written that was so glorious—it was like a kind of universal gospel music. I was never inspired by a dream before, but I woke up so moved by the sound, and the feeling I had of overwhelming optimism that I felt like I had to try to capture even a little of it. Prior to this I had no intention of working on anything during this original quarantine period, but I began almost immediately to work on this album. I don’t know if I even came close to what I did in my dream, but in my view, you’ve achieved something, if only for your own personal growth, if you even come within 10% of an unrealistic goal. In any case, I brought a few people together who were, I believe, uplifted by their involvement with the project during a very difficult time, and there were many people who wrote to me to tell me how much the music helped them get through some tough, lonely and scary times.

Any news about the Notekillers?

I never know about the Notekillers and I have given up guessing. We were originally together from 1977 to 1981 and when we broke up, there were very few people who knew about us. I would have bet a million dollars that we would have never played together again, but we reunited in 2004 after Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore talked about us as an influence in Mojo Magazine and then asked us to put an album out of our old stuff on his Ecstatic Peace label. We played together again from then until about 2013—more than twice as long as our first incarnation. Then we got back together to release a new album (our third) and play at a festival in North Carolina called Hopscotch in 2016. For a while I thought that was the end, but in February 2020, there was a two-night celebration of my music in Philadelphia. Since that was where we were from—and the other two guys still lived there, I decided to get the band back together one more time. Barry (drums) and Stephen (bass) played on a new drone piece of mine with The Western Enisphere, and then some of the ensemble played on a couple of Notekillers tunes. It was a lot of fun, and we were planning on doing some more shows, but everyone knows what happened soon after that. Maybe live shows will return in time for us to get back together again! That would be nice. I have been blessed to play with some of the best musicians around, but I have been playing with these two guys since we were teenagers—ten years even before the Notekillers! We have a special communication that is almost tribal. Plus we have a shared history of crazy events and stories that we still laugh about over 50 years later.

You also collaborated with Kid Millions, Rhys Chatham and Bernard Gann on a two-track EP called Matter Waves...It features your characteristic drones...how did this collaboration happen?

I’ve known Rhys on and off since the late 80’s and I first met Bernard when he was still a boy since he’s the son of renowned composer and music critic Kyle Gann. Kid and I connected through a mutual friend after I moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn in the early 2000s and I began to explore the Brooklyn “indie” scene. The Notekillers had re-emerged and were playing with bands much younger than us. It was a fun time—we were being appreciated much more than when we were originally together. Kid and I became friends and started jamming together. At our first jam, an important music curator unexpectedly stopped by and after listening to a little bit, he immediately asked us to participate in an important festival here in NYC. After that, we began making plans to perform more, and soon Bernard became part of things. Rhys’s involvement came about because he was in town to rehearse for a show with Kid’s main band at the time, Oneida. So Kid asked if he would like to sit in with us for a show that was taking place during his stay. It was a great night and I’m very glad it was captured in a very high quality multi-track form that led to the album you mention.

Another release, this time a compilation of your work around drones between 1996 and 2009, "Privacy Issues"...Can you tell us about this particular period that started in 1996 ?

Privacy Issues is a collection of my works that were not really made with the intention of release—I made most of them simply as personal explorations. Which is where the title came from. But Phill Niblock, the master drone composer and head of XI records asked me to do something for the label. It started out based on a piece he’d heard me perform in Berlin, and I took advantage of the opportunity to have a bunch of these other pieces heard that I had accumulated, and even record a couple of new ones.

If you could tell us what brought you to work with drones?

I suppose it is rooted in my love of psychedelic music of all types—whether the rock music of the 60s, the music of India, various parts of the African continent, the Middle East, early acoustic blues, etc. I’ve always been attracted to musics that have the trance-inducing qualities of repetition and static harmonic structures that alter your consciousness. I was entranced by it pre-drugs and also post-drugs. But surely drugs have played their part!

If David First was a proverb, a quote?

Well, as I said earlier, I believe the only thing worth pursuing is the impossible. So I like to say as a kind of joke that “The reason I am an experimental composer because nothing has worked yet!”

Your next projects?

I am currently working on a new large ensemble piece for the Western Enisphere called “Revolutions.” We have already presented preliminary versions of it a couple of times, but I’ve been revising the material and adding many new details, so I think the next version—which we will record at some point soon—will be far beyond what we’ve done so far in many ways. I also plan on more volumes of my “Same Animal, Different Cages” series—solo albums devoted to single instruments. I am continuing to create video works and when the pandemic is over I hope to go back presenting my “Dave’s Waves Sonic Restaurant” project, which is a sound and visual installation that I have presented in various cities around the world, but have been doing regularly in an actual former luncheonette here in Brooklyn for the past two years prior to the lockdown. It’s a great way to present experimental work and a fun social experience.

Thank you very much and I leave you the last words:

I just want to say that for me, music is very much a kind of yoga. The electronic tools we all have these days make many things possible that would have been unimaginable even 20 years ago. And that we have them in our homes is incredible. We can now create with a digital precision and technical virtuosity that is a composer’s dream. But I still believe that the human element, with all of its flaws and frailties, is supremely important. Striving to achieve mastery with their minds and bodies, breath and limbs is the way our ancestors expanded their perceptions for thousands of years. And I don’t think we’re finished yet with those ways of working. We can use certain new inventions to enhance and color these experiences, but, in my opinion, nothing is as powerful as the human effort to touch something that appears out of reach, or tune into a frequency that few can hear. When sensitive and creative musicians express something they feel deep inside, the result is the most profound programming possible.

David First drone music

David First Drone Music

David First Matter Waves

david first
