FR/ENG REVIEW - ARCHEAN - II - 2020 - BLACK METAL OLD SCHOOL - LE SCRIBE DU ROCK

ARCHEAN II 2020 - AUTOPRODUIT
BLACK METAL OLD SCHOOL

Instrumental Doom Sludge Metal Meets Post-Rock

ORDER OF THE EBON HAND - VII : THE CHARIOT - 2019 - SATANATH RECORDS
Black Metal from Greece

Order Of The Ebon Hand...what a nice name for a Black Metal band...With this so cute "satanic sect" side...The Greeks of OOTEH sign here their great comeback, after 14 years without an album.
They have named themselves their Black Metal "archetypal" (see on their Bandcamp) and yet...nothing archetypal here !
If we find the fundamentals of "Trve" Black Metal (darkness, occultism, witch's voice, dark riffs), it's still a very original band we're dealing with. Their keyboard reminds the best of the 60's psychedelism (a bit like Type O'Negative who themselves were inspired by... 60's psychedelism) and a track like "Dreadnaught" could have been on an old Arcturus album.

Of course, when the goal is to riffle hard and give some fire, the Athenians know how to do it with brio, for example with the more classic but powerful and swift "Mo…

INHIBITIONS - WITH THE FULLMOON ABOVE MY HEAD - 2019 - SATANATH RECORDS

The Athenians of Inhibitions practice a cold Black Metal in the great tradition of the second wave of Scandinavian Black Metal. So don't expect to find here an ersatz of Rotting Christ or Varathron: it's in the North that the Greeks find their inspiration.
Velocious, melodic, powerful, based on tremoli of riffs of the best aspect, putting forward a hoarse gorgonian voice, the duo's Black Metal is perfectly mastered, and their use of frequent tempo changes avoids any form of possible lassitude.
There's only one secret to making a successful album: writing a real record requires having real songs whatever the musical style. And the Greeks have understood this very well.

DIABOLICAL PRINCIPLES - WISTFUL WHISPERS - BLACK METAL - REVIEW (ENGLISH/FRENCH)

DIABOLICAL PRINCIPLES - WISTFUL WHISPERS (2019 LSS)
Listen to the album here

Today band is nicely called Diabolical Principles, a very appropriate name that I think it is useless to translate. We leave Poland to visit Greece at the bedside of this very pleasant group whose radicalism is not political but rather oriented towards blasphemy and the worship of nature and its divinities. Musically we are faced with a rather atmospheric and melodic Black Metal, of all beauty, with sometimes some passages that can evoke Summoning or Burzum in the most "soaring" passages. Indeed, the combo is more in love with languorous tempos than with car races. Since 1999 (yes, still no newcomers) the Athenians have been delivering their Black Metal to the Orthodox world and beyond. Personally I didn't know them before this album (we can't know everything either) and I admit I take great pleasure in listening to his black melodies certainly but sometimes enchanting!

OHTAR - EMPTINESS - BLACK METAL - REVIEW ENGLISH/FRANCAIS

OHTAR - EMPTINESS (2019 LSS)

An historical band, Ohtar have been speaking loudly since 1996 (yes!). Rather melodic and bewitching, the band's Black Metal is steeped in melancholy and darkness, even in this absolutely inhuman song that comes out of the glottis of a certain Necro (well known to Polish Black Metal fans because of his many projects and bands). Of course the band also likes to evoke hatred and defend radical ideals, to say the least, but it does so on a rather slow musical fabric, sometimes close to some Capricornus tracks or even, blasphemy supreme, to a DSBM atmosphere. The tracks are long, stretched, carried by series of inspired and engaging riffs. As the listens went by, we thought that Ohtar, if they hadn't made this choice of radicalism, could probably have become a fairly well-known band in Black Metal, but they preferred the shadows and the bad guys, tirelessly carrying their cross (the one you want) against all business and contemporary soci…
