Erre de Numen Numen is a superb example of Black Metal from the Spanish Basque Country, and also a veteran band, having been around since 1997. To mark the release of their latest album, “Erre,” on Les Acteurs de L'Ombre Productions, I had the chance to interview them. Hello, Numen. Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your new album, “Erre”? Hi, greetings from Arrasate—Lander here. Thank you very much for having us. The new album consists of five tracks. It’s still Numen, but there’s been an evolution in technical skill and song composition. Without straying from our roots, it's aggressive, straight-ahead black metal—Numen in its purest form. As for the lyrical content, the entire album is conceptual. 'Erre' means 'To Burn', and It deals with the witch hunts carried out in Iparralde back in the early 17th century. You have published a superb book entitled Black Metal Rainbows , featuring a collective reflection—produced by numerous contributors—on queer and anarchist black metal that is inclusive and rebellious. Daniel Lukes: The book came together following a “black metal theory” symposium that took place in Dublin in 2015, with a goal of injecting some color and some queerness into that field of discussion, which was arguably emphasized mainly one aspect of the black metal equation: the Nietzschean obscurantist/elitist side.
