INTERVIEW WITH EXTREME NOISE TERROR

Bisous !)

Thank you ENT for answering these questions. You’re true legends in the crust and grindcore genres. This interview will be publish in my next book “scum : une histoire du grindcore” to be released in 2019 in Camion Blanc Editions. It's Ben Mc Crow, singer of the band who is answering my questions...

Pierre : Hi Ben (Ben Mc Crow is ENT's Lead Singer since 2014). The band exists since 1985. It’s now a 33 years story ! It seems incredible for a crust/grindcore band. Can you tell us what is still motivating you ?

Ben : Well it’s only Dean left from the original line up but Ollie has been on guitar for the last 16 years or so and Andi and Mikey have been in the band on and off for the last 10 years, as long as we all enjoy playing those songs and get the chance to go to lots of great places to play to people who enjoy them as much as us, we’ll keep doing it.

P : For you, is ENT a crust or a grind band ? it seems that you’ve been a bit less “infected” by metal than your mates from Napalm Death ?

B : I see us as a hardcore punk band but I think it’s down to the individual listener to decide. The band started out as Hardcore before grindcore even existed and was a big influence on the scene, but went a bit Death Metal with the Damage 381 and Being and Nothing albums. I’m not personally a fan of that period of the band, for me the best time was Phonophobia and the Peel Sessions, and we’ve definitely gone back to those roots with the recent self-titled album and the singles and EPs. We get punks, grinders, crusties, metalheads and just general music fans coming to our shows so we have a wide appeal which is great.

P : In that book I’m talking about the sources of grindcore. I read that you were influenced in your beginnings by Discharge (of course), Anti Cimex, Rattus and Antisect. Are you agree ? Is there other influences ?

Yeah definitely, but there was also influences from other UK punk bands and of course the Japanese scene! As much as I love the UK and Scandinavian bands, I find the Japanese scene even more exciting, old bands and new. They just seem to take it to another level!

what do you think of the evolution of grindcore and extreme punk and metal music along all these years ?

A lot of what I hear now is just noise haha. They don’t write riffs, its just guitar blur, lots of blasts and random sounding vocals, it doesn’t excite me because it’s too repetitive and there’s no hooks I can get into. I much prefer the older bands like Repulsion, Terrorizer and Napalm Death who actually wrote songs with verses and choruses, but bands like Rotten Sound, Wormrot and Pig Destroyer are some of the modern bands making kick ass grind with catchy songs I can get in to.

extreme noise terror band grindcore crust punk england

Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death, Electro Hippies, Carcass, Bolt Thrower. You all were on the John Peel Sessions. Do you think you were a movement, a scene? How was the relations with the other bands back then (and now, for those whom are still here) ?

I think back then it was a movement, it was new, it was people taking Hardcore and Metal to the extreme, really pushing the boundaries and John understood it and gave everyone all this exposure that helped infiltrate the mainstream. Each of those bands you mentioned had their own separate sound and style though. I can’t speak for the guys from the old days, but I know some of the Napalm Death and Carcass guys a bit and we get on fine, I wouldn’t say we’re part of a united UK scene anymore however, and I don’t mean that in a bad way, just that we’re all doing our own thing separately, and apart from some festivals, we’re not really doing shows together these days.

Do you see yourselves as survivors ? What became of your political engagements? How do you see the actual world ?

I think its pretty incredible that a band as intense and dysfunctional as ENT are still going strong yeah! I’m very proud of being a part of it for the last few years, singing the old tracks I loved as a teenager and also contributing to the writing of the new stuff. Politically? There’s certain songs I don’t agree with entirely. Work For Never for example; I work for a living and love my job so on the surface it might not seem that relevant to me, but I interpret as not working a shit job for some scumbag boss and barely surviving, and I’m lucky enough to not have to do a that. I also don’t agree that meat is murder, I eat meat but we still play the song Murder every night for the last couple of years because people want to hear it, and its very relevant for Andi our bassist who is vegan. I always dedicate it to the vegans, hunt saboteurs and animal rights protestors because there are aspects of what they do that I agree with. I wouldn’t sing about something I was fundamentally opposed to, but I’m happy to sing lyrics that don’t totally represent my point of view if I can still respect what the words are saying.

Your “happening” with the KLF at the 1992’s Brit Awards was a big Tv moment. I remember it very well; it was for me a real “fuck you” to the establishment. Retrospectively what do you think of that performance? Will you do something in that spirit again (maybe whith a rapper? I think about Scarlxrd, the English Trap Metal generator for example) ?

It’s been done, I don’t think we’d be able to top that and it would seem like repeating ourselves so I can’t see the point, but never say never, maybe we can get Riko Dan  or The Bug to rap over some of our stuff if we ask them nicely haha! It was a massive fuck you to the music industry and the establishment but when they broadcasted it they cut out Pete’s guitar and Mark’s bass, so the sound was not as intense as it should have been. I guess they were worried that if they didn’t sabotage the sound the band wouldn’t look as bad as they probably wanted them to! I love the bit right at the end though, it zooms in on this fucking miserable horrible looking woman in her evening wear in the crowd reluctantly clapping with a face that said she wanted to be anywhere else but there!

Ben, you took the singer seat after Phil Vane passed. Can you tell us who he was et what does it represent for you?

I only met Phil once very briefly backstage at Maryland Deathfest many years ago when ENT and my old band Gorerotted played it, so I didn’t really know him but I’ve only ever heard good things about him, by all accounts he was a great man with strong principals. I have a lot of respect for him and his memory, I was of course a fan of the band and friends with all the other guys before I joined and I always dedicate his favourite song Raping The Earth to him and ask the audience to raise their glasses for him out of respect every night. For me, ENT is my chance to play in a band I was into growing up and to hang out with my good friends whilst travelling the world!

Napalm Death has become a huge band on the international scene. Have you got some regrets to not become yourselves? Have you an explanation?

No, no regrets, if you asked me this question ten years ago I would have said I wished we could be as busy as them, but at this stage in my life I wouldn’t want to tour as much as they do. I have a very happy home life, a lovely wife, a full-time job I really enjoy, my dog and I keep myself busy with ju-jitsu and motorcycles. I like being home and just doing a few shows a year here and there. Napalm Death deserve all their success, they work fucking hard and they still release great music! I don’t think any former or current member of ENT has any regrets that they have a much more prominent name than us.

Is there an album you prefer in the ENT’s discography ? Which one ?

Phonophobia! I love that album, its short, sharp and just the perfect kick up the ass! I love the last album we did too though, I’d say its the best one since then.

Can you give us your ten favourite records in grindcore ?

1.  Repulsion - Horrified
2.  Terrorizer - World Downfall
3.  Napalm Death - Enemy Of The Music Business
4.  Cock And Ball Torture - Sadochismo
5.  Sanitys Dawn - Chop Copper
6.  Napalm Death  - The Complete Peel Sessions
7.  Spazz - Crush Kill Destroy
8.  Rotten Sound - Murderworks
9.   Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope
10. Brutal Truth - Need To Control

Can we have hope to have one day another ENT album ? How much time do you see the band continues?

I hope so! We’ve put out some cool splits and singles since the last album and it would be great to put another full-length out. The guy the band recorded with for many years has retired now, he used old analogue equipment, he even had me and Dean sing through an RCA OP-6 valve amp from 1936! Now that he’s no longer working it might be too expensive for us to record again, so we may have to resort to crowd funding. We’ll keep doing it until us or the crowd are sick of it though
Is there things that please you in the actual music scene ?

I have to admit, after 20 years as a touring musician I kind of feel like I’ve seen and heard everything now but I still have a lot of fun doing it, otherwise I would have quit years ago. I would get bored just listening to Punk, Hardcore, Grindcore, Death Metal,  Thrash etc. so I also listen to a lot of Rockabilly/Pyschobilly, Reggae/Ska/Dub, Hip-Hop, Blues, traditional vintage stuff, Country, even 80s pop music!

Do you think grindcore and crust have change the world ?

I don’t think they’ve changed the world, the scenes are far too small to have had enough of an impact on the planet but they’ve definitely changed a lot of people’s lives, including mine!

Is there any French bands you like ?

We just did shows in Dijon and Nancy with Growls, they’re great guys and JP the singer reminds me a lot of Barney Greenway onstage! We also played with Gronibard in London a few weeks ago, they were kinda fun, Gorerotted did a split with them about 15 years ago so I’m surprised it was the first time I met them. I really like France, I hope we can come back more often.

punk’s not dead ? I mean, do you think we will have the chance to live another storm like punk in the future ?

I think the initial impact it had is long over and its now become a part of the establishment and popular culture it originally fought against but its definitely not dead! You only have to go to a place like Rebellion Festival to see young kids with mohawks alongside retired people with grey beards and walking sticks to see that!

Are you conscious that ENT was part of a cultural revolution ?

Very much so, you can hear the influence ENT has had on many other bands, both musically and ideologically. ENT was actually the influence for Gorerotted having two singers!

Two magic words : Brexit and Populism ?

I don’t know how we’re going to end up, I don’t think anyone does including the scumbag politicians trying to negotiate! I like the freedom I have to travel and play in Europe and to live and work there if I want, I’m gonna miss the ease with which I could do that. I’m not saying everyone who voted leave was wrong, you got to do what you feel is right for you and your family, but the fact that a lot of it was older people who wont be around in 10 or 20 years to see the effects of their choice, and the fact that the British public was lied to by UKIP and other organisations pisses me off! They were told the money that went to the EU could go to the NHS instead, then as soon as we were down for leaving, we were told it probably wouldn’t go to the NHS. A lot of fuckhead racist scumbags voted leave to reduce immigration, but that’s not going to change either. I believe in the people having the voice but it would be very naive of me to say we live in a democracy, we’re all controlled by an elite few who use vicious, scare mongering and divisionary tactics to get things the way they want.

Do you want to say something else to our readers ?

Merci beaucoup mes amis! I hope we can get to France more often because some of the best audiences I’ve played to have been there! I did a month long tour with Grave and Misery Index in 2010 when I was in The Rotted and the Nantes show was by far the most fun. The Paris show ENT played a few months back was my favourite show for some time too. So thanks to everyone who’s supporting ENT today and also to this who supported my old bands Gorerotted and The Rotted. Respect to you!

Thank you very much for your time ! It’s so precious ! I will let you know when the book will be out and send you one.

Y' t'il eu d'autres influences ?I

Extreme Noise Terror, Napalm Death, Electro Hippies, Carcass, Bolt Thrower.

1.  Repulsion - Horrified
2.  Terrorizer - World Downfall
3.  Napalm Death - Enemy Of The Music Business
4.  Cock And Ball Torture - Sadochismo
5.  Sanitys Dawn - Chop Copper
6.  Napalm Death  - The Complete Peel Sessions
7.  Spazz - Crush Kill Destroy
8.  Rotten Sound - Murderworks
9.   Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope

10. Brutal Truth - Need To Control

punk’s not dead ?

Two magic words : Brexit and Populism ?

Merci beaucoup mes amis!
