Après un "Ghost Of Orion" qui n'est pas loin d'avoir fait l'unanimité, My Dying Bride nous prouve une fois de plus que l'inspiration est bien là en ce moment avec cet Ep trois titres absolument magistral...
My Dying Bride, trois mots qui, depuis le début des années 90 résonnent puissamment dans le coeur de ceux qui, tel votre serviteur, ont été touchés profondément par le doom metal à la fois funéraire et romantique des anglais.
Et puisque je parle de romantisme, c'est bien ici à l'époque la plus romantique du groupe que je pense en écoutant ce "Macabre Cabaret". Le titre éponyme, s'étirant majestueusement sur dix minutes rappelle forcément les atmosphères envoûtantes d'un "Angel Of The Dark River", tout en ayant la grâce et la qualité sonore et musicale du dernier album en date. Gothique, My Dying Bride ne renonce pas ici au retour de ses influences doom/death opéré depuis plusieurs années mais les growls profonds d'Aaron Stainthorpe se font plus rares que sur les albums précédant "The Ghost Of Orion".
Alors un mot tout de même a l'adresse de certains métalleux qui ont, selon moi, freiné quelque peu le développement du groupe a l'époque de "34,788 % Complete", album aventureux qui est pour moi un chef d'oeuvre sous-estimé du groupe. Je fais partie de ceux qui auraient aimé voir le groupe continuer d'expérimenter, et je ne peux m'empêcher de penser, comme pour Paradise Lost, que le manque d'ouverture d'esprits de certains ont obligé ces groupes a revenir a leurs fondamentaux, alors que leur âme d'artiste les portaient ailleurs.
Passé cette considération d'ordre général, il est évident que MDB est dans une période faste de sa carrière, tant il semble qu'ils n'ont jamais autant maîtrisé leur doom, si personnel et shakespearien.
En résumé, "Macabre Cabaret" est un nouvel opus superbe dans la longue et réussie carrière de ces ménestrels de l'obscurité, décidément si talentueux...

My Dying Bride, three words which, since the beginning of the 90s, resound powerfully in the hearts of those who, like yours truly, have been deeply touched by the funerary and romantic doom metal of the English.
And since I'm talking about romanticism, it's indeed here in the most romantic period of the band that I'm thinking about while listening to this "Macabre Cabaret". The eponymous title, stretching majestically over ten minutes, necessarily reminds us of the bewitching atmospheres of an "Angel Of The Dark River", while having the grace and the sound and musical quality of the last album to date. Gothic, My Dying Bride doesn't renounce here the return of its doom/death influences operated for several years but Aaron Stainthorpe's deep growls are rarer than on the albums preceding "The Ghost Of Orion".
So a word anyway to some metalheads who, according to me, slowed down a bit the development of the band at the time of "34,788 % Complete", an adventurous album which is for me an underestimated masterpiece of the band. I'm one of those who would have liked to see the band keep on experimenting, and I can't help thinking, as for Paradise Lost, that the lack of open-mindedness of some people forced these bands to go back to their fundamentals, while their artist soul was carrying them elsewhere.
Beyond this general consideration, it's obvious that MDB is in a prosperous period of its career, so much it seems that they have never mastered so much their doom, so personal and Shakespearean.
To sum up, "Macabre Cabaret" is a superb new opus in the long and successful career of these minstrels of darkness, decidedly so talented...
