MALLEPHYR RUINS OF INNER COMPOSURE 2024 EPICTURAL PRODUCTION BLACK/DEATH METAL C'est de République Tchèque que nous revient l'ouragan Mallephyr pour un troisième opus de black/death metal violent, noir et complexe. Un album qui va nous accompagner dans les prochains mois. Bigre ! Je l'avoue, je ne connaissais pas Mallephyr avant de recevoir cet album...Mais quelle tornade ! Un tourbillon de riffs dissonants subtilement mêlés à des coups de scalpels death metal, pour un rendu à la fois brutal, avec une atmosphère haineuse et noire et des titres longs et complexes, aux riffs originaux et acérés. Le chant versatile d'Opat - également guitariste - évoque tous les démons du sud du paradis et s morgue haineuse nous atteint immédiatement. Le grand intérêt de cet album réside dans la qualité des musiciens, réellement impressionnants, et le soin apporté aux ambiances, parfois glaciales, psychiatriques ou guerrières. On y entend autant la souffrance qu'un côté vindicatif,

En ces temps pas "foufous" comme disent les jeunes, la musique est plus que jamais notre compagne fidèle. C'est elle qui nous sort de la morosité, nous empêche de flancher. Le confinement en musique c'est quand même plus simple. C'est pourquoi le scribe vous a concocté ce numéro 42 avec plein de bonne musique dedans, histoire de s’enrichir, se faire plaisir, ou parfois même simplement se divertir. Conscience est un groupe français de Rock Progressif avec une touche de Heavy Metal et des mélodies pop. Avec "In The Solace Of Harm's Way" ils nous donnent à entendre un album riche, complexe, mais abordable de par l'attention portée aux mélodies...
Ce troisième album des parisiens semble être "celui de la maturité" pour employer une expression franchement bidon ! Mais dans les faits, on se retrouve devant 55 minutes de musique extrêmement bien construite, d'une grande richesse, avec des musiciens et un chanteur qui font montre de capacités techniques et de composition assez hallucinantes.
Passant de passages instrumentaux franchement rock progressif (on pense à Rush, le Yes des années 80, Steven Wilson et son Porcupine Tree) extrêmement bien construits à des parties chantées plus "sucrées" (pour ne pas dire franchement pop, ce qui n'est pas un gros mot sous ma plume). J'ai bien lu la fiche biographique du groupe où il est fait mention de leurs influences Heavy et Power Metal. Il faut toutefois relativiser cet aspect, car si Metal il y a indéniablement par moments, cela reste relativement light face a la composante Rock du groupe. Les passages symphoniques façon musique de films sont de toute beauté, rappelant certains albums de Nightwish, avec lesquels Conscience a tourné. C'est finalement assez simple : les amateurs de Rock Progressif "moderne" seront comblés, de même que ceux qui apprécient le mélange Heavy Metal "soft" et Prog, car le groupe maîtrise indéniablement ces aspects. Pour les "gros métalleux" tout cela sera sans doute un peu trop Rock (et peut être trop Metal pour les rockeux ? ) mais c'est aussi l'intérêt de ce disque de se passer des cases et des tiroirs pour faire progresser de longs titres bien foutus et bien pensés.
A l'arrivée, on se trouve face a un album bourré de bonnes idées, de belles mélodies, de maîtrise instrumentale pour un groupe qui doit déjà faire des heureux dans les cercles Prog. On leur souhaite, à l'instar de leurs modèles, de dépasser ce cercle un peu restreint, et de s'épanouir totalement en prenant une dimension internationale qui est déjà présente à la base du groupe puisque plusieurs nationalités semblent cohabiter parmi ses membres (info que je n'ai pas pu vérifier).
Un album qui va enchanter les amoureux de Rock Progressif moderne et les fans de Metal ouverts d'esprit qui ont quelques Rush, Yes ou Porcupine Tree dans leur discothèque mais aussi les curieux amateurs de mélodies qui s'y risqueront.
Conscience is a French Progressive Rock band with a touch of Heavy Metal and pop melodies. With "In The Solace Of Harm's Way" they give us to hear a rich, complex, but affordable album because of the attention paid to the melodies...
This third album of the Parisians seems to be "the one of maturity" to use a frankly bogus expression! But in reality, we find ourselves in front of 55 minutes of extremely well-constructed music, of great richness, with musicians and a singer who show quite hallucinating technical and compositional abilities.
Moving from frankly progressive rock instrumental passages (one thinks of Rush, the Yes of the 80s, Steven Wilson and his Porcupine Tree) extremely well constructed to more "sweet" sung parts (not to say frankly pop, which is not a bad word under my pen). I've read the band's biography where their Heavy and Power Metal influences are mentioned. However, we have to put this aspect into perspective, because if there is undeniably Metal at times, it remains relatively light compared to the Rock component of the band. The symphonic film music-like passages are beautiful, reminiscent of some of Nightwish's albums, with which Conscience toured. In the end, it's quite simple: fans of "modern" Progressive Rock will be satisfied, as well as those who appreciate the "soft" Heavy Metal and Prog mix, because the band undeniably masters these aspects. For the "big metalheads", all this will probably be a bit too Rock (and maybe too Metal for the rockers? ) but it's also the interest of this record to do without boxes and drawers to make progress on long and well thought-out tracks.
In the end, we are faced with an album full of good ideas, beautiful melodies, instrumental mastery for a band that must already make people happy in Prog circles. We wish them, like their role models, to go beyond this limited circle, and to blossom totally by taking an international dimension which is already present at the base of the band since several nationalities seem to cohabit among its members (info I couldn't verify).
An album that will enchant modern Progressive Rock lovers and open-minded Metal fans who have some Rush, Yes or Porcupine Tree in their discotheque but also the curious melody lovers who will take a chance on it.
Si certains parmi vous ont gardé de bons souvenirs de la scène Fusion des années 90 (Lofofora, No One Is Innocent, Silmarils et FFF pour la France) ils devraient se pencher sur cet "Egosphère" de Ragaraja, premier album qui succède a leur EP de 2018.
Le groupe, pourvoyeur d'un Metal/Hardcore qui se colore de Djent, de rythmiques vocales tirées du Rap et aboyées façon Hardcore ajoute dans le melting-pot de ses influences des interventions électroniques discrètes mais efficaces et des riffs orientalisant du meilleur effet.
Le premier nom qui nous vient à l'esprit en matière de comparaisons est bien sûr celui de Mass Hysteria, pour cette même propension à mêler gros riffs et chant revendicatif en français. Ceci étant dit, le style de Ragaraja est plus moderne que celui de Mass Hysteria, et ne cache pas ses liens avec le Metalcore le plus technique, avec cette tendance progressive qui habite le genre de plus en plus.
Comme il se doit, ça groove bien, ça envoie bien le pâté ("Chrysalide" et ses gros riffs) et le côté colérique du chant en français fonctionne bien.
On pense parfois à un groupe comme Betraying The Martyrs pour le côté Metalcore technique à la fois mélodique et puissant.
L'album s'écoute bien, agrémenté d'ambiances diverses qui empêchent l'ennui ou le trop plein de redondances, ce qui est toujours appréciable dans un style aussi calibré.
L'ambiance très science fiction qui règne sur l'album ne fait qu'ajouter a son intérêt. Bien entendu, tous ceux d'entre vous qui se trouvent déjà allergiques au rap/metal, au Djent ou à toutes ces nouvelles façons de faire du Metal risquent de ne pas changer d'avis. Néanmoins, toute oreille avisée sera capable de reconnaître la qualité d'un opus qui enchaîne 10 titres tous fort efficaces et habilement construits.
Notre monde en pleine déliquescence ne cesse d'inspirer les groupes de Metal, dans quasiment tous les sous-genres existants de ce dernier. On sent bien, à l'écoute de cet album, cette saine colère face à un monde qui ne tient plus sur ses deux jambes.

The band, purveyor of a Metal/Hardcore that is colored with Djent, vocal rhythmics taken from Rap and barked in a Hardcore way, adds in the melting pot of its influences discreet but efficient electronic interventions and oriental riffs of the best effect.
The first name that comes to mind when making comparisons is of course Mass Hysteria, for the same propensity to mix big riffs and claiming vocals in French. This being said, Ragaraja's style is more modern than Mass Hysteria's, and doesn't hide its links with the most technical Metalcore, with this progressive trend that inhabits the genre more and more.
As it should be, it grooves well, it sends the pate ("Chrysalide" and its big riffs) and the angry side of the French vocals works well.
We sometimes think of a band like Betraying The Martyrs for the technical Metalcore side, both melodic and powerful.
The album can be listened to well, decorated with various ambiences that prevent boredom or too many redundancies, which is always appreciable in such a calibrated style.
The very science fiction atmosphere that reigns on the album only adds to its interest. Of course, all of you who are already allergic to rap/metal, Djent or all these new ways of doing Metal might not change your mind. Nevertheless, any good listener will be able to recognize the quality of an opus that links 10 tracks, all very efficient and skillfully constructed.
Our decaying world never ceases to inspire Metal bands, in almost all the existing subgenres of Metal. One can feel, listening to this album, this healthy anger towards a world that can no longer stand on its own two legs..
Seide, groupe parisien de Black Metal, travaille en ce moment même sur un nouvel album. Nous en saurons plus rapidement puisque ces derniers ont accepté de me donner une interview. A suivre donc. En attendant, voici ma chronique de leur dernier album en date, Beyond The Fallacy, petite pépite de Black Metal rageux et désespéré dans lequel se sont glissés quelques invités des plus prestigieux...
Six ans...six années d'attente entre un premier album salué unanimement par la critique (Here is No Truth) et ce deuxième lp. Seulement voila, parfois, plus c'est long meilleur c'est !
Oui, cela en valait la peine car, en 2017, les parisiens nous livrent un deuxième album absolument somptueux. Mélange racé de Black Metal épique et colérique avec un versant plus mélodramatique et désespéré, ce disque pourrait apparaître comme le chaînon manquant entre un Black Metal puissant et véloce et un Black Metal dépressif issu des meilleurs caves d'affinage. Oui, ce n'est sans doute pas un hasard si les deux guests de l'album ne sont rien moins que Niklas Kvarforth (Shining) au chant sur le très torturé "Angest" et Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen (Mayhem et Aura Noir) a la guitare sur "Les Nuits Sans lune", morceau d'anthologie d'un Black Metal ultra puissant et mélodique a la fois.
Oui, Seide réunit le meilleur des deux mondes, et rappelle a toutes fins utiles que Black Metal et DSBM appartiennent à la même famille obscure, parfois enragée, parfois découragée de vivre, n'en déplaise a de jeunes groupes révisionnistes du DSBM voulant, dans un but bassement mercantile, distinguer leur genre du papa gênant que peut être le Black Metal. "Les Nuits Sans Lune" toujours, un titre somptueux qui, à nouveau, fait le pont entre la guerre et la dépression, avec la belle intervention du violoncelle de Louise Leverd (pas vraiment une débutante puisque membre de l'ensemble de musique contemporaine Babel à une époque, et de l'ensemble Links aujourd'hui, orchestre unanimement salué pour son importance en matière de création contemporaine).
Les sentiments se succèdent sans se ressembler sur cet album magnifique, complet, superbement écrit et interprété. Si vous aimez le Black Metal mélodique et perclus d'émotions diverses, capable d'accompagner vos accès de révolte comme de soutenir vos moments de mélancolie profonde, en résumé, si vous aimez le Black Metal, car c'est de tout cela que ce genre fascinant est composé : vous ne pouvez pas continuer a passer à côté de Seide ! Oui je sais, les sorties sont nombreuses en matière de Metal Noir depuis quelques années, et la qualité pas toujours au rendez-vous. Raison de plus pour ne pas rater une pépite de ce niveau lorsqu'elle se présente ! Amoureux de la tradition des années 90 comme d'une vision plus contemporaine de ce genre maudit mais tant aimé vous serez saisis par la puissance d'évocation de ce disque, et par un groupe qui sait nous emporter loin, si loin de ce monde terne.

Six years...six years of waiting between a critically acclaimed first album (Here is No Truth) and this second lp. But here's the thing, sometimes, the longer the better !
Yes, it was worth it because, in 2017, the Parisians deliver us a second album absolutely sumptuous. A thoroughbred mix of epic and angry Black Metal with a more melodramatic and desperate side, this record could appear as the missing link between a powerful and swift Black Metal and a depressive Black Metal coming from the best maturing cellars. Yes, it's probably not by chance that the two guests of the album are nothing less than Niklas Kvarforth (Shining) on vocals on the very tortured "Angest" and Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen (Mayhem and Aura Noir) on guitar on "Les Nuits Sans lune", an anthology track of an ultra powerful and melodic Black Metal at the same time.
Yes, Seide brings together the best of both worlds, and reminds us that Black Metal and DSBM belong to the same obscure family, sometimes enraged, sometimes discouraged from living, with all due respect to young revisionist DSBM bands wanting, for a basement mercantile purpose, to distinguish their genre from the embarrassing daddy that Black Metal can be. "Les Nuits Sans Lune" still, a sumptuous title which, once again, bridges the gap between war and depression, with the beautiful intervention of Louise Leverd's cello (not really a beginner since she was a member of the contemporary music ensemble Babel at one time, and of the Links ensemble today, an orchestra unanimously hailed for its importance in contemporary creation).
The feelings follow one another without resembling each other on this magnificent, complete, superbly written and performed album. If you like melodic Black Metal, full of diverse emotions, able to accompany your fits of revolt as well as to support your moments of deep melancholy, in short, if you like Black Metal, because that's what this fascinating genre is made of: you can't go on missing Seide! Yes I know, there have been many Black Metal releases in the last few years, and the quality is not always there. All the more reason not to miss a nugget of this level when it shows up! In love with the tradition of the 90's as well as a more contemporary vision of this cursed genre, but so much loved, you will be seized by the evocative power of this record, and by a band that knows how to take us far, so far away from this dull world.
Patron...déjà tout un programme que ce patronyme, qui est à la fois celui du chanteur de la troupe et du groupe...et un album éponyme hallucinant, enregistré à LA avec des monstres de la scène Stoner comme Nick Oliveri, Joey Castillo ou Alain Johannes...Un vrai plaisir que ce disque qui nous trimbale dans un Rock Groovy, sensuel et ensoleillé...
Fans de Queens Of The Stone Age, Mondo Generator ou Kyuss vous avez le droit de vous réveiller ! Voici un premier album qui a tous les atours d'une pépite. Vous savez, ces disques rares qui vous envoûtent dès la première écoute, vous prennent dans leur bras et ne vous lâchent plus. Et on en redemande !
Il faut dire que les français ont mis les petits plats dans les grands avec un casting digne d'une rolls royce en édition limitée sertie de diamants...
Excusez du peu : Barrett Martin (Skin Yard, Screaming Trees, Mad Season), Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mondo Generator), Alain Johannes (Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vulture, Pj Harvey), Joey Castillo (Queens Of The Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles Of Death Metal) ont rejoint les parisiens avec leurs instruments et derrière la console ! Alors, bien sûr, on se méfie toujours de l'effet "supergroupe" qui correspond parfois a l'adage de l'éléphant qui accouche d'une souris. Rassurez vous ce n''est pas le cas une seconde ici. Le groupe enchaîne de vraies chansons qui s'incrustent méchamment dans la caboche : du sautillant et groovy "Room With A View" et son refrain catchy pas si loin d'un Patton en mode Faith No More, magnifié par la voix de crooner de Patron (le chanteur) en passant par un "Who You Dance For ?" qui évoque fortement le Rock désertique de Queens Of The Stone Age mais aussi des Eagles Of Death Metal et un "Very Bad Boy" immédiat et véritable hit en puissance pour ne citer que ceux là, nous sommes bien au-delà du simple name-dropping et des références : Patron se révèle, dès ce premier album, comme une véritable usine a tubes rock comme on en fait peu !
C'est devenu une vraie denrée rare de nos jours : des chansons qui vous hantent immédiatement, qui vont tout de suite titiller les hormones du plaisir rock'n'roll bien enfouies dans votre petit crâne frustré. J'avoue avoir été esbaudi par cet album qui ne quitte plus ma platine et me donne a chaque fois les mêmes fourmis dans les gambettes ! Putain que c'est bon ! 11 titres et pas un de trop, tout est du même niveau d'excellence : un véritable album où l'on sent rôder par moments les fantômes des Doors et de Nirvana. Bon j'arrête les comparaisons car Patron vaut par lui-même : un groupe qui doit normalement vous agiter les tripes, sinon peut-être faut-il allez faire réviser votre moteur a groove'n'roll ! Pour ma part, ça y est, le mal s'est immiscé en moi et ne veut plus me quitter. Ce disque est une drogue dure qui mériterait bien qu'on lui fasse une fête : allez donc écouter et acheter cette merveille mes bonnes/bons ami(e)s !!!

Patron...already a whole program that this patronymic, which is at the same time that of the singer of the troupe and the band...and a hallucinating eponymous album, recorded in LA with monsters of the Stoner scene like Nick Oliveri, Joey Castillo or Alain Johannes...A real pleasure that this record that lugs us in a Groovy Rock, sensual and sunny...
Fans of Queens Of The Stone Age, Mondo Generator or Kyuss you have the right to wake up ! Here is a first album that has all the finery of a nugget. You know, these rare records that bewitch you from the first listening, take you in their arms and never let you go. And we want more of them!
It's fair to say that the French have gone from strength to strength with a cast worthy of a limited edition Rolls Royce set with diamonds...
Excuse me : Barrett Martin (Skin Yard, Screaming Trees, Mad Season), Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mondo Generator), Alain Johannes (Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vulture, Pj Harvey), Joey Castillo (Queens Of The Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles Of Death Metal) joined the Parisians with their instruments and behind the console ! So, of course, we are always wary of the "supergroup" effect which sometimes corresponds to the adage of the elephant giving birth to a mouse. Rest assured that this is not the case here. The band plays a series of real songs that are wickedly ingrained in the noggin: from the hopping and groovy "Room With A View" and its catchy chorus not so far from a Patton in Faith No More mode, magnified by Patron's (the singer's) crooner voice, to a "Who You Dance For? " which strongly evokes the desert Rock of Queens Of The Stone Age but also the Eagles Of Death Metal and an immediate "Very Bad Boy" and a real hit in power to name but a few, we're well beyond simple name-dropping and references: Patron reveals himself, from this first album, as a real factory of rock hits like we don't have many !
It's become a real rarity these days: songs that haunt you immediately, that will immediately titillate the hormones of rock'n'roll pleasure buried deep inside your frustrated little skull. I have to admit I've been blown away by this album which hasn't left my turntable and gives me the same ants in my mouth every time! Damn, that's good! Eleven tracks and not one too many, everything's at the same level of excellence: a real album where you can feel the ghosts of the Doors and Nirvana prowling around at times. Well, I'll stop making comparisons because Patron is worth by itself: a band that should normally shake your guts, otherwise maybe you should get your groove'n'roll engine overhauled! For my part, that's it, evil has got into me and doesn't want to leave me anymore. This record is a hard drug that deserves a party : go listen and buy this marvel my good friends !!!
Alors que se précise sous nos yeux cette fin de l'espèce humaine que l'on espérait tant il me semble intéressant d'aborder le travail de End Of Mankind, avec ce surpuissant "Faciem Diaboli" paru l'an passé...
Resituons un peu les choses. Même si End Of Mankind n'existe "que" depuis 2015, il faut savoir que le groupe fut bâti sur les cendres encore chaudes d'un groupe historique de la scène française : Eternal Majesty. Certains membres du groupe ayant fait aussi des passages du côté d'Antaeus, Aosoth ou The Negation, vous comprendrez bien vite que nous n'avons pas affaire a une bande de petits plaisantins. De plus, sachez que le Scribe, toujours dévoué pour vous faire plaisir (ou pas ?) publiera bientôt l'interview de End Of Mankind, qui sera complétée dans les prochaines semaines par une "spéciale" Eternal Majesty !
Mais revenons en a ce "Faciem Diaboli". Le visage du Diable dont il est question dans le titre nous apparaît nettement dès le premier titre façon uppercut : "Vision". Musicalement nous nageons dans les eaux troubles d'un Black Metal puissant, brutal et noir, non dénué de "plans" Death Metal pour renforcer la puissance de l'ensemble, sans rien sacrifier à l'atmosphère. Dans la lignée du Mayhem moderne ou d'un Satyricon en colère, le groupe n’hésite pas a faire le lien entre les années 90 dont il est issu et l'ère moderne au travers d'un son puissant et clair, mais qui ne cède pas au risque de "propreté" des productions ultra-compressées de notre époque.
Autre point intéressant sur cet album : si l'on se prend quelques "patates" en blast-beat, il y a aussi des morceaux mid-tempo plus groovy (le très Satyricon "Drowning In Solitude" par exemple) et globalement une grande variété entre les titres qui évite tout ennui, toute lassitude due a un album linéaire. Nos gaillards connaissent la musique, savent ménager leurs effets, ainsi la construction des titres, intelligente, permet de commencer dans un tempo moyen, puis de passer dans un interlude atmosphérique et de se prendre une déflagration venue tout droit des feux de l'enfer, ce qui en renforce l'impact.
Ainsi de titre en titre se bâtit une vraie histoire, un véritable album composé de chansons, loin de la compilation de titres que l'on retrouve trop souvent à notre époque.
Il est plus que plaisant de constater que certains (à l'instar de The Order Of Apollyon) savent respecter la tradition malfaisante du Black Metal historique sans pour autant se contenter de singer ses aînés, et ainsi faire un pont entre les époques. Ce premier long format tient toutes ses promesses, et doit rapidement rejoindre la discothèque de tout amateur de ce Black Metal "véridique", à la fois noir et puissant, avec ce supplément d'âme Punk que l'on retrouve chez les vrais, et qui continue a tracer son sillon au travers des époques. Bravo messieurs, et merci !
While this end of the human species that we were so much hoping for is becoming clear before our eyes, it seems interesting to me to approach the work of End Of Mankind, with this overpowering "Faciem Diaboli" released last year?
Let's put things in perspective. Even if End Of Mankind "only" exists since 2015, it's important to know that the band was built on the still hot ashes of a historical band of the French scene: Eternal Majesty. Some members of the band having also played with Antaeus, Aosoth or The Negation, you'll quickly understand that we're not dealing with a bunch of little jokers. Moreover, you should know that the Scribe, always devoted to please you (or not?), will soon publish the interview of End Of Mankind, which will be completed in the next few weeks by a "special" Eternal Majesty!
But let's come back to this "Faciem Diaboli". The face of the Devil we're talking about in the title appears clearly from the first uppercut track: "Vision". Musically, we swim in the troubled waters of a powerful, brutal and dark Black Metal, not devoid of Death Metal "plans" to reinforce the power of the whole, without sacrificing anything to the atmosphere. In the lineage of modern Mayhem or an angry Satyricon, the band doesn't hesitate to make the link between the 90's from which it comes and the modern era through a powerful and clear sound, but which doesn't give in to the risk of "cleanliness" of the ultra-compressed productions of our time.
Another interesting point on this album: if we take some "potatoes" in blast-beat, there are also some groovier mid-tempo tracks (the very Satyricon "Drowning In Solitude" for example) and globally a great variety between the tracks which avoids any boredom, any weariness due to a linear album. Our guys know the music, they know how to spare their effects, so the construction of the tracks, intelligent, allows to start in a medium tempo, then to pass in an atmospheric interlude and to take a deflagration coming straight from the fires of hell, which reinforces its impact.
Thus, from track to track, a real story is built, a real album made up of songs, far from the compilation of titles that we too often find in our time.
It's more than pleasant to notice that some people (like The Order Of Apollyon) know how to respect the evil tradition of historical Black Metal without just singing its elders, and thus make a bridge between eras. This first long format keeps all its promises, and must quickly reach the discotheque of every fan of this "true" Black Metal, both black and powerful, with this extra Punk soul that we find in the real ones, and which continues to trace its path through the ages. Bravo gentlemen, and thank you!
Tu en as marre des groupes "propres" comme Mgla qui distillent un Black Metal certes bien foutu mais qui manque cruellement de malfaisance ? Tu es allergique au Metal passé au détergent ? Le one man band espagnol Molbol et son Black Metal cru comme un fruit pas mûr est fait pour toi : V est son...troisième album (I et II étaient des démos) et voici ce que le Scribe en pense !
En ces temps troublés où tout le monde se chamaille pour savoir qui a trouvé le remède miracle au covid-19, il me semble que l'écoute d'un bon disque de Raw Black bien rouillé et cradingue est tout a fait appropriée. Je ne sais pas si Molbol va tuer le virus ou plutôt faire plus de morts que lui mais peu importe. "V" est un album savoureux pour peu que vous soyiez amateurs des travaux les plus sales et noirs du Burzum des débuts, par exemple. Oscillant entre passages lents et mélancoliques, avec un chant déchiré et hurlant de douleur et des moments plus rapides, le one-man band du mystérieux "The Troll" va vous prendre à la gorge et ne plus vous lâcher ! Alors, il va de soi que si vous aimez les productions à la Slipknot et autres Mr Propre, cette perle de Metal Underground n'est pas pour vous. D'une langueur macabre, le son de Molbol s'incruste dans ton cervelet et va te pousser vers de noires hallucinations que sa musique ne tardera pas à provoquer. Ainsi, tel un poète maudit des temps modernes, notre madrilène nous assène quatre titres longs et atmosphériques, tout en restant franchement agressifs et tourmentés. On aime se perdre dans les méandres de ce Black Metal dénué de toute velléité "grand public" et qui assume pleinement ses racines underground.
Ne vous attendez pas pour autant a un monolithe sursaturé de son noir, car The Troll aime aussi perturber les débats avec de belles mélodies (des arpèges de guitares pas si loin de ce que peut faire Brouillard) et ainsi bâtir une oeuvre complexe et pas si facile a ranger dans une case, ce qui est une très bonne chose.
Ajoutez a cela une pochette splendide (voir ci-dessus) dont l'esthétique nous rappelle quelques bons vieux skeuds de Punk des années 80, une production abrasive comme il se doit, et vous avez entre les mains (et surtout entre les oreilles) une véritable petite merveille qui nous prouve, une fois de plus, que le Black Metal vit encore, bien caché dans un underground où il faut savoir le dénicher.
Molbol vient de commettre, avec "V" un disque qui va compter cette année en matière de Black Metal. Si nous survivons à 2020, il est fort probable que ce beau et ténébreux artefact trouve sa place dans les albums préférés du Scribe...

The Spanish one man band Molbol and its Black Metal raw like an unripe fruit is made for you: V is its...third album (I and II were demos) and here's what the Scribe thinks about it!
In these troubled times where everyone is bickering about who found the miracle cure to covid-19, it seems to me that listening to a good rusty and dirty Raw Black record is quite appropriate. I don't know if Molbol will kill the virus or kill more people than it does, but it doesn't matter. "V" is a tasty album as long as you're a fan of the dirtiest and darkest works of early Burzum, for example. Oscillating between slow and melancholic passages, with a torn and screaming voice of pain and faster moments, the one-man band of the mysterious "The Troll" will grab you by the throat and won't let you go! So it goes without saying that if you like Slipknot and other Mr. Clean productions, this gem of Metal Underground is not for you. With a macabre languor, the sound of Molbol is embedded in your brain and will push you towards dark hallucinations that his music will soon provoke. Thus, like a cursed poet of modern times, our Madrid native assaults us with four long and atmospheric tracks, while remaining frankly aggressive and tormented. We like to get lost in the meanders of this Black Metal which is devoid of any "mainstream" velleity and which fully assumes its underground roots.
But don't expect a monolith over-saturated with black sound, because The Troll also likes to disrupt the debates with beautiful melodies (guitar arpeggios not so far from what Brouillard can do) and thus build a complex work not so easy to put in a box, which is a very good thing. Add to that a splendid cover (see above) whose aesthetics remind us of some good old 80's Punk skeuds, an abrasive production as it should be, and you have in your hands (and especially between your ears) a real little marvel which proves us, once again, that Black Metal still lives, well hidden in an underground where you have to know how to find it. Molbol has just committed, with "V", a record that will count this year in terms of Black Metal. If we survive to 2020, it is highly probable that this beautiful and dark artefact will find its place in the Scribe's favourite albums...

Bien ancré dans l'underground, notre gang de l'est nous gratifie d'un album de Doom Metal porté sur l'occultisme et assez typique de la scène de l'Est, avec cette touche presque Rock qui les caractérise.
Le couvent maudit et son charme slave (les textes en polonais déclamés de façons solennelle) nous donne huit titres lourds et obscurs, avec une touche Black Metal subtile et distillée à des moments clés. C'est bien néanmoins dans le Doom que le groupe évolue, et un Doom qui n'a que peu de lien avec le Stoner ou une quelconque relecture de Black Sabbath mais vise plutôt le spectre le plus Punky/Métallique du spectre de ce genre.
Une production rude et sans fioritures sert parfaitement le propos de ce groupe qui ne cherche pas à faire dans la séduction facile mais plutôt a rester fidèle a une certaine idée d'un Metal underground loin des ficelles faciles du showbiz. Le groupe ayant eu l'intelligence, comme je le disais en intro, de construire ses titres d'une façon assez proche d'un groupe de Rock (rock très lourd quand même !) les chansons s'enfilent comme des perles et jamais o grand jamais le spectre de l'ennui ou du sentiment de répétition ne s'installe. Ce qui était finalement un grand test pour eux était de voir ce qu'ils allaient donner sur la longueur d'un album (ils n'avaient jusque là sorti qu'un EP et participé à des splits) et l'on est plus que rassuré : on en redemande. Cet album a beau être les deux pieds dans l'under, il n'en n'est pas moins d'une écoute agréable. Le chant déclamé et solennel accroche l'auditeur pour ne plus jamais le lâcher, tandis que les riffs nous hantent bien après l'écoute de l'album. J'ai beau ne pas parler un traître mot de polonais, je trouve que cette belle langue est extrêmement musicale, et se fond parfaitement dans les ténèbres de ce Doom Metal du meilleur acabit.
Bref, vous l'aurez compris, le Scribe recommande chaudement l'acquisition de ce disque absolument délicieux, que vous soyez un(e) grand(e) fan de Doom ou de Metal underground en général, laissez vous séduire !

Well anchored in the underground, our eastern gang gratifies us with a Doom Metal album focused on occultism and quite typical of the eastern scene, with that almost Rock touch that characterizes them.
The cursed convent and its Slavic charm (the Polish lyrics solemnly declaimed) gives us eight heavy and obscure tracks, with a subtle Black Metal touch distilled at key moments. It's nevertheless in the Doom that the band evolves, and a Doom that has little to do with the Stoner or any rereading of Black Sabbath but rather aims at the most Punky/Metallic spectrum of the genre.
A rough and unadorned production perfectly serves the purpose of this band that doesn't try to seduce easily but rather to remain faithful to a certain idea of underground Metal far from the easy strings of showbiz. The band having had the intelligence, as I said in the intro, to build their songs in a way quite close to a Rock band (very heavy rock though!) the songs are strung like pearls and never o ever the spectre of boredom or the feeling of repetition sets in. What was finally a great test for them was to see what they would give on the length of an album (they had only released one EP so far and participated in splits) and we're more than reassured: we're asking for more. Even if this album is a bit of an underdog, it's still a pleasant listening. The declaimed and solemn vocals catch the listener's attention and never let go, while the riffs haunt us long after listening to the album. Even if I don't speak a word of Polish, I find that this beautiful language is extremely musical, and blends perfectly into the darkness of the best Doom Metal.
In short, as you will have understood, the Scribe warmly recommends the acquisition of this absolutely delicious record, whether you are a great fan of Doom or of underground Metal in general, let yourself be seduced!
S'il est un groupe qui s'est toujours distingué de ses pairs norvégiens sur la scène Metal c'est bien Red Harvest ! Ce groupe a part, largement sous-estimé, bénéficie ici d'une superbe réédition de son album "Hybreed", sur une maison de disques française, qui plus est (Cold Dark Matter Records). Une réédition somptueuse sous la forme d'un digisleeve augmenté d'un deuxième cd comprenant un live enregistré en 2016 au Blast Fest de Bergen en Norvège...Allez, je vous dis ce que j'en pense !
Red Harvest a toujours existé a contre courant, sauf peut être a leurs tous débuts lorsque ils pratiquaient un Thrash Metal tonitruant. Nous étions alors a la fin des années 80. Au début des années 90, après un album dans la continuité Thrash de leurs démos (Nomindsland) les norvégiens, plutôt que d'aller vers le courant Black Metal en pleine expansion dans leur belle patrie, vont aller puiser chez Killing Joke et quelques autres une inspiration industrielle qu'ils vont mixer a du Doom Metal, des éléments gothiques et même parfois progressifs. Pas simple d'imposer une telle couleur musicale à l'époque, notamment pour un groupe norvégien.
1996. Le groupe sort Hybreed, sans doute leur album de référence. Malgré la montée en puissance du courant Metal Indus incarné par Ministry, Nine Inch Nails ou Godflesh, les membres de Red Harvest vont porter la croix du groupe culte, ce qui veut dire adoré par leurs pairs et les connaisseurs mais largement inconnus du grand public.
Cette réédition de toute beauté d'un album paru il y a plus de vingt ans est une parfaite occasion de découvrir ou de redécouvrir un groupe alors au sommet de son inspiration. Les titres, menaçants, s'y enchaînent parfaitement. Combinant industriel torturé a mi-chemin entre Killing Joke et Ministry, passages Doom écrasants, les norvégiens démontrent qu'ils n'ont rien a envier a leurs compatriotes investis dans le Black Metal en matière de noirceur. On se dit d'ailleurs que ce groupe, s'il était né du côté des USA, aurait sans doute connu un succès bien supérieur.
Le bel objet que Cold Dark Matter records nous propose ici (label nommé d'après un titre d'album du groupe) est mis en beauté par un visuel signé par Dehn Sora himself. La remasterisation de Cyrille Gachet (déjà responsable de travaux pour Year Of No Light, The Great Old Ones ou Bagarre Générale) redonne une deuxième vie à un album qui garde toute sa fraîcheur et sa puissance d’envoûtement. Car il y a quelque chose de définitivement chamanique dans la musique de cet album : une puissance qu'on ne peut identifier, dont on n'arrive pas à savoir si elle est maléfique ou bénéfique, mais qui vient vous prendre aux tripes dès l'introduction de "Maztürnation" pour ne plus jamais vous quitter, et continue de vous hanter une fois l'album terminé. La seule solution étant de ré-appuyer sur "play".
Le live ajouté ici démontre qu'en 20 ans le groupe (pourtant splitté en 2010 avant un retour scénique à partir de 2015) n'a rien perdu de sa verve, de sa folie, et que sa musique lourde, noire, oppressante et unique a gardé toute sa force.
Réparons une injustice en donnant enfin à Red Harvest le succès qu'ils méritent ! Cette réédition montre une fois de plus que la musique n'a aucune date de péremption et qu'un groupe unique, en avance sur son temps, le reste même vingt années après !
If there is one band that has always distinguished itself from its Norwegian peers on the Metal scene it's Red Harvest! This band, largely underestimated, benefits here from a superb re-release of their album "Hybreed", on a French record company, what's more (Cold Dark Matter Records). A sumptuous reissue in the form of a digisleeve increased by a second cd including a live album recorded in 2016 at the Blast Fest of Bergen in Norway... Come on, I tell you what I think about it!
Red Harvest has always existed against the current, except maybe in their early days when they were practicing a thundering Thrash Metal. We were then in the late 80's. In the early 90's, after an album in the Thrash continuity of their demos (Nomindsland), the Norwegians, rather than going towards the Black Metal trend that was growing in their beautiful homeland, went to Killing Joke and a few others for an industrial inspiration that they mixed with Doom Metal, gothic and even progressive elements. Not easy to impose such a musical colour at the time, especially for a Norwegian band.
1996. The band released Hybreed, probably their reference album. Despite the rise of the Metal Indus current embodied by Ministry, Nine Inch Nails or Godflesh, the members of Red Harvest will carry the cross of the cult band, which means adored by their peers and connoisseurs but largely unknown to the general public.
This beautiful re-release of an album released more than twenty years ago is a perfect opportunity to discover or rediscover a band then at the height of its inspiration. The titles, threatening, follow one another perfectly. Combining tortured industrial midway between Killing Joke and Ministry, crushing Doom passages, the Norwegians show that they have nothing to envy to their compatriots invested in Black Metal when it comes to darkness. In fact, we think that this band, if it had been born in the USA, would probably have been much more successful.
The beautiful object that Cold Dark Matter records offers us here (label named after an album title of the band) is enhanced by a visual signed by Dehn Sora himself. The remastering of Cyrille Gachet (already in charge of works for Year Of No Light, The Great Old Ones or Bagarre Générale) gives a second life to an album that keeps all its freshness and its power of bewitchment. Because there's something definitely shamanic in the music of this album: a power that you can't identify, that you can't know if it's evil or beneficial, but that comes to take you by the guts as soon as "Maztürnation" is introduced, never to leave you again, and continues to haunt you once the album is finished. The only solution is to press "play" again.
The live added here shows that in 20 years, the band (although split in 2010 before a stage comeback in 2015) hasn't lost any of its verve, its madness, and that its heavy, black, oppressive and unique music has kept all its strength.
Let's repair an injustice by finally giving Red Harvest the success they deserve! This re-release shows once again that the music has no expiration date and that a unique band, ahead of its time, is even twenty years ahead of its time!
J'avais dit tout le bien que je pensais du premier EP brut de décoffrage d'Archean. Les voici revenus avec un deuxième EP, baptisé simplement "II" et toujours aussi direct, avec néanmoins des nuances nouvelles. Allez je vous raconte un peu ce que j'en ai pensé...
Archean c'est un groupe bordelais créé en 2018 et pratiquant un Black Metal bien Old School et bien crade, teinté d'influences Punk et Thrash. Bref, tout ce qu'il faut pour séduire le Scribe ! Ce qui est toujours plaisant chez eux c'est ce côté direct, cru, brut, et toujours sombre et agressif. Ils n'ont pas oublié que le Black Metal se devait aussi de secouer un peu son auditeur. Pourtant l'intelligence du groupe est aussi de savoir distiller son BM dans des fûts de chêne qui savent aussi jouer avec des nuances et des mélodies. Ainsi des influences (non invasives) de Voivod dans ces relents Thrash dissonants, et du côté Punk du groupe, bien qu'il soit moins présent sur ce deuxième EP.
En effet, par rapport au premier méfait, on peut considérer qu'Archean se sont quelque peu "raffinés" en incorporant plus de riffs complexes (mais jamais compliqués !) et de structures plus "écrites". Il suffit pour s'en convaincre d'écouter l'excellent "The Strait" qui a quelque chose de progressif dans l'écriture, avec ses ruptures rythmiques et sonores. Rassurez vous les gros bourrins, l'ensemble continue de sentir le souffre et la violence, et les influences de Celtic Frost se font ressentir dans ces passages plus Doom (l'excellent "Uletif"). Bruyant, écrasant, explosif, le Black Metal d'Archean fait plaisir a entendre en cette époque troublée ou certains croient faire du Black Metal en produisant un machin en plastique tout mou. Chez Archean on respire fort heureusement l'odeur du grand cornu et, je peux le dire, nous sommes en présence d'un combo qui a tout pour devenir grand. Si, comme tout le monde, le groupe se retrouve actuellement contrarié dans ses plans "scéniques" par un certain Covid-19 (encore un groupuscule anti-Black Metal ?!) il n'en reste pas moins que ces messieurs aiment faire parler la poudre sur scène également, et qu'ils passeront non loin de chez vous quand ce cher Covid sera retourné dans le cul de la chauve souris dont il n'aurait jamais du sortir. En attendant supportez ce genre de groupes en plein essor en acquérant cette superbe galette toute noire (seulement 8 € ! C'est donné !) qui va vous aider a garder la haine et la frénésie intacte du Black Metal durant cet étrange confinement. Archean, le Scribe fait les paris : un groupe qui DOIT devenir GRAND !
Un EP chaudement recommandé, un Black Metal raw et noir comme le charbon, avec tout ce qu'il faut de bases Thrash et Punk pour vous donner envie de créer une émeute a l'Elysée ! Précipitez vous !
I had said all the good things I thought of Archean's first raw demolition EP. Here they come back with a second EP, simply named "II" and still as direct, with new nuances nevertheless. Let me tell you what I thought about it...
Archean is a band from Bordeaux created in 2018 and playing a very Old School and dirty Black Metal, tinged with Punk and Thrash influences. In short, everything you need to seduce the Scribe! What's always pleasant with them is this direct, raw, raw, and always dark and aggressive side. They didn't forget that Black Metal also had to shake its listener a bit. However, the band's intelligence is also to know how to distil their BM in oak barrels that also know how to play with nuances and melodies. Thus, Voivod's (non-invasive) influences in these dissonant Thrash hints, and on the Punk side of the band, although it's less present on this second EP.
Indeed, compared to the first misdeed, we can consider that Archean have somewhat "refined" themselves by incorporating more complex (but never complicated!) riffs and more "written" structures. You only have to listen to the excellent "The Strait" which has something progressive in the writing, with its rhythmic and sonorous breaks. Don't worry, the whole continues to feel pain and violence, and Celtic Frost's influences are felt in these more Doom passages (the excellent "Uletif"). Noisy, overwhelming, explosive, Archean's Black Metal is a pleasure to hear in these troubled times where some people think they're making Black Metal by producing a soft plastic thing. At Archean we fortunately breathe the smell of the big horn and, I can say it, we are in the presence of a combo that has everything to become great. If, like everyone else, the band is currently thwarted in its "stage" plans by a certain Covid-19 (another anti-Black Metal group?!), the fact remains that these gentlemen like to make the powder talk on stage too, and that they'll pass by not far from your place when dear Covid is back in the bat's ass from which he should never have come out. In the meantime, support this kind of booming bands by buying this superb black cake (only 8 €! It's a gift!) that will help you keep the hatred and frenzy of Black Metal intact during this strange confinement. Archean, the Scribe makes the bets: a band that MUST become BIG!
A warmly recommended EP, a raw and black as coal Black Metal, with all the Thrash and Punk basics to make you want to create a riot at the Elysée Palace! Hurry up !
Quand Etienne Sarthou (Aqme, Grymnt) et Pierre Duneau (Memories Of A Dead Man) s'unissent sous la bannière de Deliverance pour générer du Sludge/Black Metal avec des bouts de Post Metal dedans, on se doute qu'ils ne sont pas là pour la gaudriole. La preuve en musique avec cet album glauque et poisseux qui se trouve être une bande son idéale pour ce drôle de temps confiné : Holocaust 26 : 1-46. Le Scribe vous fait part de son analyse...
Deliverance...oui, on pense tout de suite au film traumatisant du même nom, réalisé en 1972 par John Boorman. Bon, personnellement, 1972 est d'autant plus traumatisante pour moi que c'est l'année de ma naissance ! Bref, pour ce qui est de la référence au film, là aussi, on se doute bien que le groupe ne va pas nous emporter dans un torrent de rigolade façon Ultra Vomit, loin de là. Tout au long de cet album (le deuxième du groupe) nous naviguons dans un épais brouillard de goudron malodorant et glauque sans espoir de rédemption. Seules quelques pauses plus "post-metal" donnent quelques respirations a cet ensemble pestilentiel et éprouvant (mais on aime ça, souffrir pour la musique !). Comme il se doit dans ce créneau musical, les titres sont longs, s'étirant parfois sur de longues couches Doom/Sludge aux ambiances fantomatiques. Ce qui est plaisant dans ce cauchemar musical est que l'on ne s'y ennuie jamais. De "Saturnine", plombé et malfaisant, en passant par "God In Furs", malsaint et pétri de noires méditations jusque "The Gyres", plus mélodique, quasiment Post-Rock et futuriste (au début, avant que le plomb ne s'abatte de nouveau), le groupe a l'intelligence de ne pas se refaire d'un titre a l'autre, ce qui donne de la force et de la pertinence aux attaques les plus métalliques du disque comme aux passages plus aérés, qui manquent souvent dans les albums de Sludge, et parfois rendent une écoute in extenso assez pénible.
Ce n'est pas le cas ici, car le groupe, composé il faut dire d'une sacré brochette de musiciens, a pensé ses morceaux comme de vraies chansons, avec divers paliers, des progressions bienvenues.
Perdez vous encore dans "Sancte Johannes" où l'on a l'impression que le rédacteur de l'apocalypse ressuscite pour nous prédire mille malheurs nouveaux.
La religion, thème chéri du groupe, est ici traitée d'une façon subtile, qui change du "gloire à Satan" habituel, et l'on goûte cette ambiguïté qui laisse l'auditeur se faire son propre chemin au travers des méandres de ce disque tortueux.
Si, comme moi, vous êtes amateurs de lourdeur métallique, vous aurez ici votre dose de "pachydermisme" (oui je sais c'est un néologisme) allié a une noirceur de suie, pour mettre en valeur le pire des deux mondes.
Un album vraiment passionnant, narratif et équilibré, sachant varié les plaisirs tout en restant les deux pieds dans une fange de noirceur, de boue et de plomb fondu. Un véritable plaisir tout du long !

Deliverance...yes, we immediately think of the traumatic film of the same name, directed in 1972 by John Boorman. Well, personally, 1972 is all the more traumatic for me because it's the year I was born! In short, as for the reference to the film, there too, we can imagine that the band is not going to take us in a torrent of fun Ultra Vomit style, far from it. Throughout this album (the second of the group) we navigate in a thick fog of smelly and gloomy tar without hope of redemption. Only a few pauses more "post-metal" give a few breaths to this pestilential and trying set (but we like it, suffering for the music!). As it should be in this musical niche, the tracks are long, sometimes stretching on long Doom/Sludge layers with ghostly ambiences. What's nice about this musical nightmare is that you never get bored. From "Saturnine", leaden and evil, through "God In Furs", unhealthy and full of dark meditations, to "The Gyres", more melodic, almost Post-Rock and futuristic (at the beginning, before the lead comes down again), The band has the intelligence not to repeat themselves from one track to another, which gives strength and relevance to the most metallic attacks of the record as well as to the more airy passages, which are often missing in Sludge's albums, and sometimes make a listening in extenso quite painful.
It's not the case here, because the band, made up of quite a bunch of musicians, has thought of its tracks as real songs, with various levels and welcome progressions.
Lose yourself again in "Sancte Johannes", where you get the impression that the writer of the apocalypse is resurrecting to predict a thousand new misfortunes.
Religion, the band's cherished theme, is treated here in a subtle way, which changes from the usual "glory to Satan", and one tastes the ambiguity that lets the listener make his own way through the meanders of this tortuous record.
If, like me, you're fond of metallic heaviness, you'll have here your dose of "pachydermism" (yes, I know it's a neologism) allied to a sooty blackness, to highlight the worst of both worlds.
A really exciting album, narrative and balanced, knowing how to vary the pleasures while staying both feet in a mud mire of darkness, mud and melted lead. A real pleasure all the way!
Avec Astral Sabbath les Montpellierains de Verdun nous proposent un deuxième album mélange de plomb fondu, de brouillard mortifère et de colère déployée.
Avec un nom comme Verdun il ne faut pas s'attendre a une promenade champêtre et printanière couverte de fleurs et de sourires ensoleillés, cela parait tomber sous le sens. Avec ce deuxième LP, les gars de Montpellier nous gâtent en matière de lourdeur, oppression et noirceur ! Mixant dans leur tambouille diabolique un Sludge épais comme opaque, un Doom lourd comme un marteau mythologique retombant lourdement sur une enclume mythique et des relents morbides d'un Hardcore a la fois féroce et ténébreux.
Cette encyclopédie de la douleur commence avec le titre "Return Of The Space Martyr", tout en lourdeur, qui met directement mal a l'aise, et vient vous ravager avec ses riffs boomerangs a décorner le diable lui-même.
Vient ensuite "Darkness Has Called My Name" le bien nommé, et, vu l'ambiance de charbon, on n'est pas étonné que le chanteur (l'excellent David Sadok) soit interpellé davantage par les ténèbres qu'un petit angelot un peu bisounours.

Oui, a l'écoute de ce titre on croit volontiers que cette musique profondément torturée, malaisante comme disent les minots, soit davantage inspirée par un monde envahi par le noir plutôt que par un arc en ciel chatoyant. Une bande son parfaite pour nos temps particulièrement sombres, non ?
Le titre se déploie sur plus de dix minutes, et nous donne l'opportunité, après le déluge de Metal fondu qui se répand sur nous les premières minutes, de découvrir une facette plus portée sur l'atmosphère et les ambiances avec des guitares un peu moins lourdes, un chant moins hurlé et davantage d'éléments psychédéliques. Mais un psychédélisme façon bad trip, ce n'est pas le summer of love ici. Paulo semble avoir perdu la boule, et les riffs façon Sabbath ne tardent pas a le rattraper, histoire de nous achever après une (relative) accalmie. Car le spectre du grand Black Sab habite forcément l'ensemble, mais un Black Sab sacrément perverti, rongé à l'os par un acide hardcore boueux et ayant perdu tout espoir d'être aidé par Dieu, qui a du aller voir ailleurs.
Arrive alors Интерлюдия, ce qui signifie "interlude" en russe. Un instrumental qui s'en va naviguer vers une sorte de Post-Rock noirâtre, comme un Godspeed You ! Black Emperor des mauvais jours, ceux ou il faut parler poliment pour éviter de se faire emplafonner.
S'ensuit le bien nommé "Venom" et son poison distillé sur plus de neuf minutes : c'est un plaisir que d'être torturé de la sorte. N'ayant rien à envier au Black Metal le plus noir, le son du groupe, toujours aussi lourd et prenant, vous hante dès les premières secondes. C'est ici le venin de l'amour perdu, de l'être absent, qui ronge l'espace sonore et nous avec. Dans cette période étrange de confinement lié au Coronavirus, où la solitude se fait douleur physique, l'écoute au casque d'un tel titre peut causer quelques dommages (trop tard pour moi...).
Alors arrive "The Second Sun". Va t'il nous délivrer des tourments de ce Sabbath astral méphitique qui nous broie l'âme depuis tant de minutes. Les planètes semblent s'aligner, et les premières secondes sont trompeuses, avec une légèreté que l'on n'avait pas entendus jusque là. Mais bien vite le mal se fait un chemin et revient la douleur.
Verdun y trouvent néanmoins l'occasion de nous montrer une facette plus mélodique, comme un Soundgarden qui serait tombé dans la marmite hardcore la plus sombre.
S'ensuit alors "L'enfant nouveau" sculpté des mains de l'homme pour purifier la planète de ses vices. Un titre en français, qui démontre si besoin que le genre se prête aussi aisément a la langue de Molière. Parcouru des mêmes spasmes Grunge que "The Second Sun" ce titre au propos plus positif apporte une certaine paix intérieure, pour peu que l'on soit capable de trouver la paix au milieu du tumulte d'un Doom Metal particulièrement pesant et occulte.
La fin du voyage se fait avec "Astral Sabbath" et l'on s'attend a voir débarquer des sorciers de l'espace prêts à accomplir leur rituel millénaire en l'honneur des géants et autres êtres surnaturels venus de la nuit des temps. Le rituel de sang peut commencer, la lune est rouge.
Au final un album absolument succulent et jouissivement pervers, qui nous donne a entendre un groupe qui ne se satisfait pas de distiller la même lave en fusion tout du long mais propose un véritable album, doté d'atmosphères différentes, comme un voyage dans les pérégrinations de l'âme humaine dans sa complexité.
With Astral Sabbath, the french band Verdun offer us a second album mixing molten lead, deadly fog and unfurled anger.
With a name like Verdun you can't expect a country and springtime walk covered with flowers and sunny smiles, it seems to make sense. With this second LP, the guys from Montpellier spoil us in terms of heaviness, oppression and darkness! Mixing in their diabolical drumming a Sludge as thick as opaque, a Doom as heavy as a mythological hammer falling heavily on a mythical anvil and morbid hints of a Hardcore at the same time fierce and dark.
This encyclopaedia of pain starts with the track "Return Of The Space Martyr", all in heaviness, which directly makes you feel uncomfortable, and comes to ravage you with its boomerang riffs to decorate the devil himself.
Then comes "Darkness Has Called My Name" the aptly named "Darkness Has Called My Name", and, considering the coal atmosphere, we're not surprised that the singer (the excellent David Sadok) is more concerned by the darkness than a little teddy-bear angel.

Yes, listening to this track, one readily believes that this deeply tortured music, malaise as the minots say, is more inspired by a world invaded by darkness rather than by a shimmering rainbow. A perfect soundtrack for our particularly dark times, isn't it?
The track unfolds over more than ten minutes, and gives us the opportunity, after the flood of molten metal that pours over us in the first minutes, to discover a more atmospheric and ambient-oriented side with slightly lighter guitars, less screaming vocals and more psychedelic elements. But a psychedelic bad trip, it's not the summer of love here. Paulo seems to have lost his mind, and the Sabbath riffs soon catch up with him, just to finish us after a (relative) lull. Because the spectre of the great Black Sab lives in the whole, but a Black Sab, a perverted Black Sab, gnawed to the bone by a muddy hardcore acid and having lost all hope of being helped by God, who had to go elsewhere.
Then comes Интерлюдия, which means "interlude" in Russian. An instrumental that navigates towards a kind of blackish Post-Rock, like a Godspeed You! Black Emperor of the bad days, the days when you have to speak politely to avoid being swallowed up.

Having nothing to envy to the blackest Black Metal, the sound of the band, always so heavy and gripping, haunts you from the very first seconds. It's here the venom of lost love, of the absent being, that gnaws at the sound space and us with it. In this strange period of confinement linked to Coronavirus, where loneliness becomes physical pain, listening to such a track on headphones can cause some damage (too late for me...).
Then comes "The Second Sun". Will it deliver us from the torments of this mephitic astral Sabbath that has been crushing our souls for so many minutes. The planets seem to align, and the first seconds are deceptive, with a lightness we had not heard before. But soon the evil makes its way and the pain returns.
Verdun nevertheless find the opportunity to show us a more melodic side, like a Soundgarden that would have fallen into the darkest hardcore cauldron.
Then follows "L'enfant nouveau" sculpted by the hands of man to purify the planet of its vices. A title in French, which shows if need be that the genre lends itself so easily to Molière's language. Covered with the same Grunge spasms as "The Second Sun", this track with a more positive purpose brings a certain inner peace, as long as one is able to find peace in the middle of the tumult of a particularly heavy and occult Doom Metal.
The end of the journey is done with "Astral Sabbath" and we expect to see space wizards coming to perform their thousand-year-old ritual in honour of giants and other supernatural beings from the dawn of time. The blood ritual can begin, the moon is red.
In the end an absolutely succulent and joyfully perverse album, which gives us to hear a band that is not satisfied with distilling the same molten lava all along but proposes a real album, with different atmospheres, like a journey in the peregrinations of the human soul in its complexity.
Hevius, groupe de Heavy/Power Metal made in France nous offre avec "Millénaire" un deuxième album pêchu, joyeux, plein d'entrain. Un Metal mélodique qui ne se prend pas la tête et partage ses bonnes vibrations...
Au royaume du Metal, les intentions diffèrent fortement, les sonorités aussi, et il est parfois difficile de réaliser que l'on met deux groupes sous ce même "mot valise". Hevius fait partie de ces groupes qui ont le Heavy Metal chevillé à l'âme et dont l'objectif est avant tout de provoquer un headbanging compulsif chez l'auditeur. Il serait néanmoins réducteur de ne voir dans ce "Millénaire" qu'un pur objet de divertissement léger et sans conséquences. EN effet, nous avons d'abord affaire a une solide bande de gaillards qui connaissent parfaitement leur sujet. Les guitares de Julien Ferrier et Olivier Louis-Servais nous renvoyant avec bonheur à la paire Kai Hansen et Michael Weikath au temps béni où Helloween nous régalait de leurs "Keeper Of The Seven Keys I & II" ! Des twin guitars parfaites, du Power Metal dans ce qu'il a de meilleur, ne tombant pas dans la niaiserie de certains groupes contemporains.
Non, chez Hevius, malgré les références évidentes que peuvent être Iron Maiden, Helloween ou Stratovarius, et Freedom Call ou Gloryhammer plus récemment, on sait rigoler certes (la reprise hilarante du "Vice & Versa" des Inconnus) mais on ne se fout pas de la gueule du monde. Les compos sont chiadées, les rythmiques variées, entre speed et mid-tempo, les claviers, bien présents, ne surplombent pas pour autant les guitares. Un point particulier : le chant de Julien Ferrier, plus proche du Rock Français que du Heavy Metal, et parfois à la limite de la justesse, est peut-être l'axe d'amélioration du groupe. Pour autant, l'ensemble swingue bien, ça balance, ça donne la pêche, et, le temps d'un album, tu en oublierais presque cette pute de Coronavirus. Bref, du "Feel Good Metal" qui, par ces temps moroses, fait un bien fou. Le groupe nous balance de véritables tubes, comme "Millénaire" ou "De l'autre côté du miroir", sans parler du réenregistrement de leur tuerie "Nous Sommes des Rois" !
Que demande le peuple ? ça joue bien, ça file la pêche, c'est du Power Metal de haute volée !
A l'arrivée un album de Heavy/Power Metal parfaitement écrit et exécuté, qui va vous donner des envies irrépressibles de banguer vos têtes et de sauter partout ! Heavy Metal is the law !

In the kingdom of Metal, the intentions are very different, the sounds too, and it's sometimes difficult to realize that we put two bands under the same "suitcase word". Hevius is one of those bands that have Heavy Metal in their soul and whose aim is above all to provoke a compulsive headbanging in the listener. Nevertheless, it would be simplistic to see this "Millennium" as nothing more than a light and inconsequential object of entertainment. After all, we're dealing with a solid bunch of guys who know their stuff inside out. The guitars of Julien Ferrier and Olivier Louis-Servais happily send us back to the pair Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath in the blessed days when Helloween was regaling us with their "Keeper Of The Seven Keys I & II"! Perfect twin guitars, Power Metal at its best, not falling into thesilliness of some contemporary bands.
No, with Hevius, despite the obvious references that can be Iron Maiden, Helloween or Stratovarius, and Freedom Call or Gloryhammer more recently, we certainly know how to laugh (the hilarious cover of the "Vice & Versa" of the Unknown) but we don't make fun of the world. One particular point: Julien Ferrier's vocals, closer to French Rock than to Heavy Metal, and sometimes on the verge of accuracy, is perhaps the band's axis of improvement. Nevertheless, the whole thing swings well, it swings, it gives you a good feeling, and, for the time of an album, you'd almost forget this whore of Coronavirus. In short, "Feel Good Metal" which, in these gloomy times, does a lot of good. The band throws us real hits, like "Millénaire" or "De l'autre côté du miroir", not to mention the re-recording of their slaughter "Nous Sommes des Rois"!
What do the people ask for? It plays well, it's great, it's great power metal!
The result is a perfectly written and executed Heavy/Power Metal album that will make you want to banish your heads and jump everywhere! Heavy Metal is the law!

INTERVIEW VINDSVAL OCT 2019 "Je ne peux pas me contenter du hasard ou du non-sens, mon esprit refuse complètement cette idée dont beaucoup semblent aujourd'hui s’accommoder" (Vindsval) William Sheller chante qu'il veut être un homme heureux...je ne sais pas si c'est possible, mais en tout cas, pour moi, avoir le privilège de cette interview est une des choses qui se rapprochent le plus du bonheur. C'est la deuxième fois que le maestro se confie a moi, et cette fois encore plus longuement. C'est sans doute son interview la plus intime, la plus personnelle, et, selon ses mots, probablement la dernière qu'il donnera, l'homme préférant la solitude du créateur. Une dernière fois donc, et ceci nous a permis d'aborder l'enfance de Vindsval, son rapport a l'art, a l'esthétique, au showbiz, la philosophie, la poésie, la lumière, l'histoire...et le black metal, bien sûr. Interview téléphonique, le 26 Novembre dernier... J'ai eu la chance d'avoir un entretien par téléphone avec Rose. Il s'est montré des plus courtois, prêt à répondre à toute question et particulièrement agréable. Finalement, Rose, c'est un peu notre David Bowie à nous, un peu notre Iggy Pop aussi. Au delà de son amour invétéré du Glam Rock et Metal, il y a le fait qu'il a eu de nombreux visages dans sa carrière, et que, tel le caméléon Bowie, il a incarné différents personnages. Un jour Nicolas Saint Morand, un autre RMS Hreidmarr ou Vinnie Valentine, il réalise ses fantasmes au gré de ses envies depuis plus de vingt ans. Un être énigmatique et fascinant, dont le mystère ne sera pas totalement dévoilé à la lecture de cette interview, mais peut être cela vous permettra t'il au moins de mieux le connaître, et de mieux appréhender ce parcours aventureux et riche... Quand j'ai décroché l'interview qui suit avec l'ami Albatard (le bassiste, vous savez, le mec qui accompagne les musiciens partout 😂 ) je n'avais qu'une inquiétude : qu'il déconne tellement qu'il ne réponde pas à mes questions. Nicolas Claux : Put The Fun In Funeral, une/an interview avec/with Le Scribe Du Rock "Peuple de France, le gouvernement te ment. Si j’ai appris une chose dans les morgues, c’est que ton espérance de vie se raccourcit à vue d’œil. Cancers, AVC, diabète, et désormais virus de plus en plus virulent, ton compte à rebours est déclenché. Achète un Bundyldo avant qu’il ne soit trop tard" (Nicolas Claux) S'il est vrai que Nicolas Claux (ou Castelaux comme nom de plume selon les cas) a commencé sa carrière à la rubrique faits divers (profanations de sépultures, cannibalisme, utilisation du sang comme "drink" et finalement meutre) il a commencé une deuxième vie après des années d'incarcération. Se découvrant une passion assez logique pour le metier d'agent mortuaire, qu'il a pratiqué de nombreuses années, il est aujourd'hui directeur de collection chez Camion Noir (le pendant "macabre" du Camion Blanc), mais aussi patron du site de murderabilia
