Review - Skald - Winter Songs - Decca/Universal - French / English Text - Agence Singularités/Le Scribe Du Rock - 2021 - neofolk
Depuis 2018 Skald, sous ses diverses incarnations, peut être perçu comme une réponse française au fameux Wardruna du génial Einar Selvik. Après deux albums plutôt réussis, voici revenir le combo néofolk païen avec un EP de cinq titres qui voit le line-up réduit à sa portion congrue puisque ne sont plus présents que les deux fondateurs du groupe, Justine Galmiche au chant et Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet aux instruments (et avec quelques choeurs discrets). Pierrick Valence (ex-Phazm) s'en est donc apparemment allé.
L'EP s'offre à nous dans la continuité des deux albums, avec cette influence Viking toujours très présente, Justine s'exprimant toujours en vieux-norrois. Cette fois Skald célèbre Jol, le solstice d'hiver nordique, une véritable fête de l'hiver avec toute la beauté glaciaire qu'il charrie avec lui. Les cinq titres sont fort beaux, même si l'on peut regretter que le côté yin/yang que composait le duo Justine Galmiche/Pierrick Valence au niveau du chant penche cette fois, forcément, du côté uniquement féminin. Une fois dit cela, on prend toujours beaucoup de plaisir à écouter ce court EP, cadeau de Skald à ses fans pour les réconforter de la crise interminable que nous traversons. On pense parfois aux derniers efforts de Myrkur, tant le féminin sacré semble ici habiter les travaux de Justine, secondée donc par le co-fondateur du groupe en la personne de Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet. Un retour aux sources ? Un interlude ? L'avenir nous le dira, en tout cas Skald reste un fleuron de notre beau pays prouvant que nous sommes aussi capables de fort belles choses en matière de folk nordique et chamanique.
Avec Winter Songs, Skald nous offre un apéritif savoureux, et l'on se languit déjà la suite de leur carrière sous la forme d'un troisième album.
Since 2018 Skald, under its various incarnations, can be seen as a French answer to the famous Wardruna of the brilliant Einar Selvik. After two rather successful albums, here is the return of the pagan neo-folk combo with a five-track EP that sees the line-up reduced to a bare minimum since only the two founders of the band, Justine Galmiche on vocals and Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet on instruments (and with a few discreet backing vocals), are now present. Pierrick Valence (ex-Phazm) has apparently left.
The EP is in the continuity of the two albums, with this Viking influence still very present, Justine still speaking in Old Norse. This time Skald celebrates Jol, the Nordic winter solstice, a real winter festival with all the glacial beauty it brings with it. The five tracks are very beautiful, even if we can regret that the yin/yang side that the duo Justine Galmiche/Pierrick Valence composed on the vocals leans this time, inevitably, on the only female side. Having said that, it's still a lot of fun to listen to this short EP, a gift from Skald to his fans to comfort them from the never-ending crisis we're going through. One sometimes thinks of Myrkur's last efforts, so much the sacred feminine seems to inhabit the works of Justine, assisted by the co-founder of the band in the person of Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet. A return to the roots? An interlude? The future will tell us, but in any case Skald remains a jewel of our beautiful country proving that we are also capable of great things in terms of Nordic and shamanic folk.
With Winter Songs, Skald offers us a tasty appetizer, and we are already looking forward to the continuation of their career in the form of a third album.
