Salut Bukowski et merci de répondre à mes questions ! Depuis 2007 vous nous proposez un mélange de rock, de metal, de stoner, de grunge, bref, un cocktail des plus réjouissants ! Avant de parler du dernier album pouvez vous nous rappeler comment le groupe s'est formé et votre rapport avec Bukowski, l'écrivain ?

Le groupe a été initialement formé par Mathieu, Julien et Nico (le premier batteur), Buko est né sur les cendres de plusieurs groupes.
Le rapport à l’écrivain est très simple, on était des gros lecteurs de ce qu’il faisait et prendre ce nom (qui était libre d’utilisation!) nous paraissait coller avec qui on était et notre manière de voir le monde.
Parlons maintenant du nouvel album, éponyme. C'est un disque particulièrement puissant, peut être moins stoner qu'avant, mais vous réussissez de mieux en mieux à conjuguer rock et metal. Comment réussissez vous une telle alchimie ? Parlez nous de la réalisation de ce disque …
En fait je crois que le secret a été de ne pas se poser de questions et d’aller au bout de chaque idée.
A la fin, on voyait ce qu’on gardait, mais on ne se mettait pas de barrières pendant la composition.
Une liberté totale quoi.
Matthieu, le décès de ton frère Julien hante cet album...Peut on le considérer comme un hommage ?
Oui.
Cet album devait être autre chose à la base, il devait se nommer Arcus, il devait avoir une autre pochette qui était prête, un autre tracklisting…
Mais on ne pouvait et on ne voulait plus faire cet album comme il était prévu.
Tout tourne donc autour de Julien, il sera toujours là donc oui c’est un hommage et une manière de lui dire qu’on ne l’oubliera jamais.
Si Bukowski devait être une citation ou un proverbe ça donnerait quoi ?

La scène rock et metal se porte bien en France, du moins artistiquement. Qu'en est-il de l'aspect financier, dans cette drôle de période ou les concerts ne remplissent pas toujours hélas ?
Oui la période est compliquée mais j’ai l’impression d’entendre ça depuis 2 ans maintenant.
J’ai quand même la sensation qu’il se passe des choses, je vois de supers albums sortir, des festivals sortir de terre, je vois du monde aux concerts à qui ça fait du bien de venir.
Il ne faut rien lâcher parce que la culture est un moteur essentiel de nos vies, on ne s’en passera pas!
Restons sur l'époque...Nous traversons une ère particulièrement sombre et difficile...comment cela affecte t'il votre musique ? Est ce que cela provoque des couches de noirceur supplémentaires ?
Ça a un impact forcément, et on le ressent dans cet album.
Il a été composé en distanciel pendant le confinement alors qu’on aime jouer ensemble d’habitude.
Cette distance a évidement créé de la noirceur chez tout le monde et ça ressort dans ces morceaux.
Des dates à nous annoncer dans les prochaines semaines/prochains mois ?
Oui c’est en pleine préparation pour le moment mais le 15 octobre au forum de Vauréal ce sera notre release à la maison!
Vos groupes préférés de tous les temps dans tous les styles ?
Les Beatles, Pearl Jam, Alice in chains, Thrice…. Et tellement d’autres!
Si vous deviez présenter Bukowski à quelqu'un qui ne vous a jamais entendu ?
Je lui ferais écouter tout simplement.
Il n’y a pas de meilleure présentation que par l’écoute.

Hi Bukowski and thanks for answering my questions! Since 2007, you've been offering us a mix of rock, metal, stoner, grunge, in short, a very pleasant cocktail! Before talking about the last album, can you remind us how the band was formed and your relationship with Bukowski, the writer?
Hi!
The band was initially formed by Mathieu, Julien and Nico (the first drummer), Buko was born on the ashes of several bands.
The relationship with the writer is very simple, we were big readers of what he did and taking this name (which was free to use!) seemed to fit with who we were and our way of seeing the world.
Let's talk about the new album, the self-titled one. It's a particularly powerful record, maybe less stoner than before, but you manage to combine rock and metal better and better. How do you manage to achieve such an alchemy? Tell us about the making of this record ...
Actually I think the secret was to not ask questions and to go after every idea.
At the end, we saw what we kept, but we didn't put any barriers during the composition.
It was a total freedom.
Matthieu, the death of your brother Julien haunts this album... Can it be considered as a tribute?
Yes.
This album was supposed to be something else, it was supposed to be called Arcus, it was supposed to have another cover, another tracklisting...
But we couldn't and didn't want to make this album as it was planned.
So everything revolves around Julien, he will always be there, so yes, it's a tribute and a way to tell him that we will never forget him.
If Bukowski had to be a quote or a proverb, what would it be?

The rock and metal scene is doing well in France, at least artistically. What about the financial aspect, in this strange period where concerts are not always full?
Yes, it's a complicated period but I feel like I've been hearing that for 2 years now.
I still have the feeling that things are happening, I see great albums coming out, festivals coming out, I see people at concerts who feel good to come.
We mustn't give up because culture is an essential motor of our lives, we can't do without it!
Let's stay with the times...We are living in a particularly dark and difficult era...how does it affect your music? Does it bring about additional layers of darkness?
It does have an impact, and you can feel it on this album.
It was written from a distance during the lockdown when we usually like to play together.
This distance obviously created a darkness in everyone and it comes out in these tracks.
Any shows to announce in the next few weeks/months?
Yes, it's in the works at the moment, but October 15th at the Vaureal forum will be our home release!
Your favourite bands of all time in all styles?
The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Alice in chains, Thrice.... And so many others!
If you had to introduce Bukowski to someone who has never heard you before?
I'd just make them listen.
There is no better introduction than by listening.
