MINCECORE OR DIE ! INTERVIEW WITH AGATHOCLES - english/french text - PUNK - GRINDCORE - MINCECORE

MINCECORE FOR PASSION NOT FOR FASHION !
Interview with Jan Frederickx from AGATHOCLES

Agathocles - Photo

Ever heard of bands that have remained totally honest, perfectly faithful to their ideals in both word and deed for over 35 years? Not common, believe me! AGATHOCLES, Belgian band who invented the Mincecore current, a pure and hard version of Grindcore with an even more marked fidelity to the Punk roots is one of these rare birds. 35 years they've been fighting against the system, faithful to anarchist ideals from which they've never deviated. Jan, one of the band's historians, gave me this beautiful and long interview where we talk about the history of grind, the birth of Mincecore, real antifascism that is not a witch hunt, Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt and many other things! Thanks again to Jan and the whole band for this PASSIONATE interview!

Hello Agathocles ! Thank you for this interview. You were born as a band in 1985 ! Can you remind us how the band was created, and what was the purpose back then ?

JAN : The band was created by Erwin (drums/voice) and me (guitar/voice). We were a two-piece band back then and we were all very young. We both were 13/14 years old. Erwin and me, we got in contact with eachother a year before, because both of us were doing a paper fanzine, and I was doing a small tape label. Both of us were into extreme punk and metal and we wanted to create the most noisy, fastest, raw band ever, hahaha. We wanted to make noise ourselves because the stuff we liked, was not being sold in the recordshops we went to. So that’s a bit about how it all started.

Agathocles - Cabbalic Gnosticism

You're from Antwerpen, Belgium. How was it to be a Grindcore band in Belgium in 1985 ?

JAN : Haha, we are NOT from the city of Antwerp which is, by the way, a very ugly city full of hypocritical money-grabbing politicians !! We are from a city called MOL, which is situated in the provence (region) called ANTWERPEN. Well, AG started there, now two of us live in GEEL, next to Mol, and another member lives in Holland, near the north sea. In 1985, there was nothing like grindcore here in Belgium. We were the only band doing that kind of noise. But there were killer fast punk/hardcore bands such ZYKLOME A, MORAL DEMOLITION, KOYAANISQUATSI, CAPITAL SCUM, WULPSE VARKENS, VORTEX, NO DEBT,… Back in those days, nobody liked AGATHOCLES. We were not accepted by any scene, punks hated us and metalheads hated us … But that all changed when « grindcore » became more popular.

Agathocles - If This Is Gore, What's Meat Then?

Soon people were astonished by your live perfomances. 33 years later, is it still a priority ?

JAN : Hahaha, I can’t say if people were astonished by our live performances. Well yes, some liked it, but I am sure that many hated and still hate our kind of noise and growling and screaming. But anyway, the gigs in the old days were fun and I was young and was only singing back then, so I could jump around on stage and dive into the audience and make a fool out of myself, hahaha. Now, it’s a different story. I am too old to have the physical energy for jumping around and all, and I have a bassguitar in my hands. I still do like playing gigs and touring, but like I said, I am getting old and don’t have the physical ability anymore like in the early days. Playing live and touring is always a good way to meet new people and see old friends again.

Agathocles - Sociopath

About the name Agathocles. He was a king from Syracuse that's it ? Why did you choose that name ?

JAN : I found that name at school, back in the 1980’s. We got some ancient Greek language at school, and in some book, I found some story about AGATHOCLES. I found his story, born as son of pottery-maker and becoming king of Sicily, very interesting. And the name sounded really good and original, I thought. So we took this name. It’s very interesting to read about the life of AGATHOCLES. Killing the rich oligarchs (plutocrats), taking the power, giving more rights/freedom/wealth to the poor, becoming an autocrat and a king and before he died, installing democracy in his country. All this happened around 300 before christ. Very interesting.

For you where did Grindcore came from ?

JAN : Well, the term « grindcore » was invented by Mick Harris, the absolutely great drummer of NAPALM DEATH back in the 1980’s. What a drum-beast. Amazing !! He came up with the name, I think. For me, musically, many old bands have had an impact on what later became « grindcore ». Bands coming from the extreme spectrum of PUNK and from the extreme spectrum of METAL. Just listen to the first blast beats made by bands like CYANAMID and WRETCHED, already in 1981/1982. As well as the first NIHILISTICS EP and LP. Also the sound and song structures of HELLHAMMER/early CELTIC FROST and early BATHORY have had an impact on the grindcore-sound, for me at least. Other bands who had an impact as well are bands like LARM, NEOS, BRIGADA DO ODIO, early DISCHARGE and many others. And the ideology of early grindcore was 100% based upon the DO IT YOURSELF-ethics of anarcho-punk bands like CRASS. According to my long time friend Tonyo, drummer of Spanish grind band VIOLENT HEADACHE, first time « grindcore » was used was in a review of the SIEGE demo, back in 1984.

You created the « mincecore » to describe your music. Was it just a joke or did it have a signification ? Was it a term to say the world : « let's get back to true Grindcore basis » ?

JAN : We got the idea to call ourselves « mincecore » end of the 1980’s. No, it was not meant as a joke. End of the 80’s, many bands started to use porn/gore image in grind, and many people thought that AG also was into this porn and gore thing, just because we played grindcore. We have nothing to do with that and wanted that people know that AGATHOCLES stands for the initial ideology of grindcore, which is DIY-ethics, autonomy, socially and politically aware, anarcho-communist ideology, anti-music business approach,… So from that moment, we called our stuff « mincecore ». Like you say, « mincecore » is just « old school minimalistic grindcore which is socially and politically aware, DIY and anti-music business ».

Agathocles - Theatric Symbolisation of Life

Do you feel more part of the punk scene or the metal one ? You had a background in both ?

JAN : Yes, AGATHOCLES comes from both « scenes » metal and punk. I guess we come from the extreme spectrums of both scenes. Both hardcore/punk as well as metal bands have had an impact on how AGATHOCLES started and developed its sound/lyrics, the way we work etc…. I am talking about hardcore/punk bands like WRETCHED, CYANAMID, NEOS, ABSURD, LARM, CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER, NIHILISTICS, old ASOCIAL, YOUTHKORPS, DISCHARGE, DISORDER to name a few and metal bands like HELLHAMMER, CIRITH UNGOL, IRON ICE, DEATHSTRIKE, BATHORY, MAJESTY, HELLHOUSE, OCCULT (USA), early CELTIC FROST,… And many more bands to mention. With AGATHOCLES, we play gigs arranged by metal people as well as by hardcore/punk people, so I think we are a part of both scenes. And well, I really don’t believe in this seperation of scenes. I mean, you can’t judge someones whole personality just by the music he or she is listening to. That’s too easy. There are nice people everywhere, in metal and in punk scene. But unfortunately, arsholes and opportunists are also in every scene.

A bit of Autopromo ! My book about Punk and Metal

Mincecore became a little subgenre of Grindcore, where bands are more close to Punk roots and political engagement. What do you think about it ?

JAN : Yes, I do think that MINCE CORE is more close the ethics of anarcho-communist punk. DIY-ethics, autonomy, socially and politically aware, anti-music business approach,… Especially DIY and autonomy are very important to MINCE CORE. You don’t need big mainstream labels, commercial booking agencies, band-managers and all that. All things can be done in another way, and that way is the DIY-network of friends worldwide. Ofcourse many bands who play other kind of music are also working like this. I have met many metal bands who work like this, electro-bands working like this,…. It’s not exclusive to one music style, it is just a choice that you as a band/artist have to make or don’t choose to do.

Agathocles - Mincecore Not Wargore: Collection Tape '88-'90

Do you have a preference for some bands of that « mincecore » genre ?

JAN : Yes….All of them !!! Hahaha … There are many old and new mince bands around the world, so too many to name. In fact , the term « preference » means something like the « best » , and fuck that shit, no one is the best in any kind of thing. The fact that « mince core » even exists, is the fact that mince core bands stick together and fight mainstream arseholism in music business like rock stars, managers, commercial festivals/agencies,…..and shit like that. MINCE IS PROTEST ! And EVERY BAND, no matter what kind of music they play or how « famous » they are, deserves the SAME respect. I see bands get treated SO WRONG on those big festivals because they don’t speak out….With this I mean, the big commercial arshole bands just take the big cash, play a gig because its in their contract and don’t give a shit, and the REAL (little, mostly young) bands get the bad treatment and play with 300% of energy …….. So all those fuckers in music business earning tons of money, fuck you or play well, it’s YOUR job to entertain, and if you choose that way, do it good or FUCK OFF…. And then we come back to MINCE CORE…. Entertainmant is not our job, MINCE CORE is not to entertain … it’s punk, it’s to provocate, to give info, to change,….it’s a way of life …. It has always existed, but we just gave it another name, that name is MINCE = PROTEST. And never forget the fun part anyway, hahaha.

Agathocles - Black Clouds Determinate

You recorded a lot of albums, splits, Eps...What are your favorite releases ? And why ?

JAN : That’s a difficult question. Yes, we have done many recordings, and some I like more then the others, but still, it is difficult to choose which one I like most. Every recording brings up memories from the times when we have recorded them. So all these recordings are something like an « audio photo book » , if you know what I mean. They bring up memories and capture the moment of the recording period. That’s also why the sound and songstructures change from moment to moment. And also the lyrics change from moment to moment. It shows my mood of the time of recording, and my mood changes because of situations, the things that are going around on at that moment, life in general,…. A dynamic and difficult mood, I have, hahahaha.

Agathocles - Razor Sharp Daggers

About some « Grindcore subgenres » what do you think of Goregrind, Noisegrind, Cybergrind ?

JAN : Yes, there are many subgenres in « grindcore ». I think every subgenre has its great bands. But I prefer my cup of grindcore without the technical metal riffing and solo’s, if you know what I mean. I prefer my cup of grindcore simple, minimalistic and crude. Not polished and not ultra technical, I am just not into that, I never was. I also never was into YNGWIE MALMSTEEN or STEVE VAI so I don’t need such virtuose playing in grindcore. In goregrind, noisegrind and cybergrind, there are tons of killer bands I like.

Agathocles - 30 Songs about Love and Hate

Political engagement...You are well known for your positions... Are you still in it as a band ?

JAN : As a band, we support anti-fa and anti-nazi 300%. I can only speak for myself now, I was in a political movement, if that means, a political party, but stepped out of that. Political movements don’t change shit, they only wanna brainwash you with promises and not facts based on the past, to make things better... And they wanna get their most famous ones on the throne of « being a politician » and grab all money they can. And then, the voters are waiting for « change », but change  can only be done after other elections, and after elections, they just do what they want, and they get paid by YOU, the voter. This means that all those nice and good-wanting people have voted for a money grabbing narcist arshole or cunt on the throne, and they can’t get rid of him or her for several years…. I 200% understand the anger of the « gilets jaunes » and black block movement. It has been since the start of the factories that the ulcer of capitalism has been growing and growing…. Socialist governments are just a kiss on the wound and don’t solve the real problem. For me, it is always about throwing down the system that oppresses the ones, the 99% of the people, who work and pay for the richness of 1%. In this way, EVERY WAY is good to act. Politicians have failed, labor movements have failed, employers have failed, « our » people have failed (the government, we voted for them)….. And that’s the way why « gilets jaunes » movement touches people !! People in a position where they can’t loose anymore, right or left, that is of NO importance in this matter… They ask ACTION, because they voted for the arseholes who lied to them during elections to change things. I have given up all hope for voting…. I am a nihilist, always been…. Every human in power will corrupt one day ….. The best revolution is ……. The one you bring into yourself and then act like this. Which means, do not swallow propaganda from everyone, make your own mindset based on facts and not on lies, and judge yourself what is good and what is not. With good, I always mean « good and with solidarity » …. We don’t need narcist know-better egoists who are rich and despise solidarairty because they live on a cloud, but when that cloud falls down, are being saved by the good of the solidarity of all people, which he/she despised. I am talking about people who live in total richness and look down on the ones who have a lot less, and then end up in that same position …Must we support and be kind to those ? I don’t give an answer nor opinion, but these things happen all the time. When we get rid of a capitalist and neo-liberal system, the danger of people getting into this rollercoaster of insecurity would be much less. And more people would be unstressed because of daily payments of bills for water, electricty, public transport, rent, buying a house, ….. A lot of things would be MORE possible for 95% of the people , instead of allowing all exclusive access to 5% of the rich bastards, who SPIT on solidarity and have lawyers to check out how they can avoid solidarity and the FAIR taxes which come with being solidair.

You never stopped since 85, even if the line up had change. How can you explain that ?

JAN : That is simple.. Being strong, when you feel weak. When AG started we were spit out and shouted out by punks and metals. That was around 1985. Before that, Erwin and me were already doing paper fanzines and compilation tapes,…when we hear all those killer bands like LARM, NEOS, VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER, SATANIC LEGIONS OF DEATH, REVENGE OF THE WHORES, VATICAN, THANATOS, BLACK SHEPHERD,….. we wanted to make more noise as them. The fact that AG still plays, is the fact that we always said NO to MANAGERS, NO to CONTRACTS, NO to mainstream labels,… and NO to all arseholes who support this shit. Building up a network of friends and like-minded people worldwide is the basis of all DIY-scenes.

Agathocles - Thanks for Your Hostility

Jan, you are the pillar of the band. What is your feeling about all these years ?

JAN : There is NO pillar. The only thing that is is the « pillar » is making noise. One thing that is important, i like i said before, we care, we need and we fight. We don’t need musicians, we need armed guys, ready for fight with NOISE.
Our fight is VOICE YOUR NOISE
And if that fits with the rest of the band, then we go.

Agathocles - Humarrogance

Commence to mince is your last album to date, released in 2016. What is different on this one ?

JAN : It is different because it released in 2016. Our first recording was released in 1985 …. That’s 35 year different. That’s the difference, hahaha.

How do you find the energy to go on with mincecore ?

JAN : MINCE CORE has no need for energy. It’s the energy of people making noise and being active and when they wanna call it MINCE CORE, then it’s MINCE CORE. MINCE CORE is just all power and energy for anti-authority and anarchism to create change in many ways, socially, politically and musically.

How do you see the world we living in in 2019 ?

JAN : If we can live « good » together, we need take back what is OURS (for all persons) : the power, the richness and solidarity. Then 2019, can be a good start. For historians in 2500, or aliens, looking back at 2019, they would say « how the fuck could they put soooooooooo much money into a building which burnt (notre Dame) and was made by people they did not even know, while their fellow-citizen is suffering in poverty and can’t pay the bills for water, rent, electricity ». This old AG lyric from 1996 captures the spirit. It’s a short song, so it has a short lyric : « Scotty, beam me up, there is no intelligent life on earth ».

About your relationships with Napalm, Extreme Noise Terror... Whose are your real friends ?

JAN : In the 80’s, I was frequently in contact with Mick Harris, who at that time, was drummer for both NAPALM DEATH and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. We wrote long letters to eachother and were trading tapes. I got to know many killer obscure bands back then, thanks to him. In 1987, I arranged NAPALM DEATH gig at the local youthclub in Mol and one year later, 1988, we invited EXTREME NOISE TERROR there. AGATHOCLES played on both gigs… We were happy as fuck ofcourse, to play with these masters, hahaha. Mick has always been very friendly and open to me, and I like him a lot. We lost contact beginning of the 90’s. I also had a good contact with Phil, one of the singers of EXTREME NOISE TERROR, but it is so sad that he passed away. He was such a great person. Always helpful, down to earth, friendly, understanding,….. Today, I have no contact with the current NAPALM DEATH and current EXTREME NOISE TERROR members.

If i tell you Seth Putnam what do you answer ?

JAN : He passed away at young age (43 years old), and that’s sad. I never was in contact with Seth and I never met Seth. He was a controversial person taking things to the extreme. I am not really into his main band ANAL CUNT and also not into the recordings he did as vocalist for SIEGE in 1991. But he was also a short time in POST MORTEM (the USA one), and I like that band. Especially their CORRONERS OFFICE album, but I don’t think Seth was on this one. Another band he was in, was SATANS WARRIORS, who did a split EP with the amazing PSYCHO back in 1994. A great split EP. In 2016, I had the chance to meet the ANAL CUNT guitarplayer Josh during our USA tour. He was a nice person. Unfortunately Josh died in 2018. And Seth was also in some other bands like EXECUTIONER and SHIT SCUM ….

About Antifascism. Don't you think some people have changed in that « movement ». I remember in 80's or 90's it was all about changing the world, DIY, have another attitude...Today it seems like it's just chasing Evil Black Metal bands and fascists everywhere. Don't you think there is a kind of « derive » here ? Like a « leftist Mc Carthysm » ? (cf live shows cancelled and else...for me anarchism is not about interdictions or censorship!)

JAN : I really don’t think you can compare « being aware and acting against fascist/nazi ideologies in any kind of music scene » with the 1950’s Mc Carthyism. Mc Carthyism was supported by the leading government and the USA media at that time, « cleaning the scene of nazi/fascist trash » is a completely different matter. Ofcourse, it is total bullshit to accuse bands of being nazi/fascist when they use political symbols or history in a sense of dark, black humour, … then all comedians should be accused of sexism, fascism, anti-semitism or whatever …. There is a big difference between this kind of humour/sarcasm or whatever, and people/bands who really praise fascism/nazism/sexism/….. The line can be thin, sometimes. So bands who use this kind of humour, should also make clear what they stand for, to avoid confusion instead of « raising the courtain of mystery », because many people don’t get severe black humour and sarcasm (I myself, I love black humour and sarcasm and can see through it, by the way, hahaha). And yes, it’s ridiculous when some bands are boycotted or cancelled because they are «so-called nazis » because some famous scene-star nitwits say so and spread these rumours through social media (social media suck, by the way, hate that crap). Evil Black Metal has nothing to do with nazism/fascism, I like many bands in that genre. Ofcourse, in every kind of music genre, there will be nazis/fascists/sexists…..It is like a micro-society, a reflection of the bigger world around us. Check out the homophobic scene which exists in the reggea-scene for example,….they are surely not about love and peace, but about killing transgenders and gay people. To end this answer, I will tell you this story about an AG gig in Santiago, Chile back in 2007 on our 2 month tour in South America. Our gig in Santiago was boycotted by two different organisations : one was a neo-nazi movement wanting to kill us if we play there, because they said AG are communist rats, and the other organisation was some local anarchist movement saying that AG were a fascist band. Two boycotts for the same concert, a winner, hahahaha. We played that concert and the gig was just amazing thanks to the organisation and all people who showed up and who were not afraid because of the bomb-threat the nazis announced. Those two different organisations should have been working together to shut down our gig instead of doing their thing seperately, hahahahahahaha,CO-OPERATION NOT COMPETITION, hahahaha….. fuck’m all.

What is the message behind Agathocles in 2019 ?

JAN : Message ? Uff, that’s a difficult one. As you know, we stand for anarcho/communist ideas which we wanna translate also in our music and in the way we work. Maybe the message can be that ideologies like DIY-ethics, autonomy, socially and politically awareness, anti-music business approach are a good alternative for the mainstream commercial music business. A good and creative alternative one that really works, well, it works for us just fine. And we will keep on emphasizing that neo-liberalism is a big evil which is only serving the super rich. Neo-liberalism should be stopped and replaced by a fair economical system. We will also keep on fighting in all kind of ways, against the rise of ultra-nationalism, neo-nazism and neo-fascism. This fight is needed and must be fired up, because right now, the rise of these egoist, intolerant and short-sighted ideologies, is at it’s highest top since the end of world war 2.

Did you recently discover new great bands ?

JAN : Yes ofcourse. There are always great new bands to discover. During our last tour in Chile, in February 2019, I got to know this great young noise-punk band called IGNORANTES. They have released 3 tapes, all of them amazing. Really crazy noise-punk like DISORDER, STATE CHILDREN, CHAOS CHANNEL, DUST NOISE, GAI,….. Killer. Other great new bands I recently discovered are RUIDOSA INCONFORMIDAD from Chile, PARASOMNIA from Finland, ALIGRINDTOR from Croatia, USA LA TUA RABBIA from France and many many more.

Freedom of speech : tell us whatever you want ?

JAN : I think that I already said many things in this interview, hahaha. I wish you all the best with this book and the website. It was nice doing this interview. I hope I made some things clear about some important items. If people have questions about it, feel free to contact us. Cheers to all of you ! MINCE CORE FOR PASSION, NOT FOR FASHION.

INTERVIEW AVEC JAN FREDERICKX D'AGATHOCLES

Agathocles - Photo

Bonjour Agathocles !

Agathocles - If This Is Gore, What's Meat Then?

Agathocles - Theatric Symbolisation of Life

A bit of Autopromo ! My book about Punk and Metal

Agathocles - Mincecore Not Wargore: Collection Tape '88-'90

Agathocles - Black Clouds Determinate

Agathocles - Razor Sharp Daggers

L'engagement politique...

Agathocles - 30 Songs about Love and Hate

Agathocles - Thanks for Your Hostility
