BUKOWSKI
Bukowski
2022 AT(h)OME
Rock/Hard Rock/Metal
Bukowski, in this year of filth 2022, will sound as good as ever with the term "resilience". Resilience because the band had to face the premature death of Julien Dottel, the band's bassist and brother of Matthieu Dottel, the excellent vocalist and guitarist of the band. The result is a self-titled fifth album, tragic, deep and powerful, like a cry of hope from the depths of darkness.
Known since its formation in 2007 for a clever mix of stoner rock, metal and modern hard rock, Bukowski gives this time more complexity to its songs, with structures sometimes close to progressive. The powder talks, however, don't worry, and Mathieu's feeling-filled vocals (sometimes not far from a Chris Cornell) still grab us as much as ever, provoking goose bumps in series. On this album, the band has managed to diversify its music more than ever, the proof being "Crossroads" which goes from speed to grungy mid-tempo, or "Arcus" and its spoken-word in French. There's never a dull moment when listening to this record, which combines the best of modern rock and current hard rock/metal, with, perhaps, less support in the Stoner genre than in the early days of the band. Mathieu's vocals are magnificent, with vocals doubled in choir style that even reminded me of the excellent Kings X, those "Beatles of Metal" who are a bit unfairly forgotten today. So the album may not be released in a joyful context, because it carries the mourning of Julien, and the lyrics (in French!) of "Arcus" evoke the end of the world (or of a world), but Bukowski's energy dominates the darkness, and allows us to glimpse a glimmer of hope in a deep darkness.
Bukowski have just made a great record with this fifth opus, an exceptional fusion of their influences and showing an exceptional personality. If you like guitar rock, melodic metal, grunge like Soundgarden or Alice In Chains with a modern sound, and bands that know how to write beautiful songs with unifying choruses, throw yourself on this "Bukowski" as soon as it is released!
