GOLIARD : Interview with a black metal band from Medellin / english & french text - Le Scribe Du Rock
Goliard, a black metal band from Medellin, , has been delighting our ears with its epic and aggressive music for three albums, all of them sumptuous. Signed to the excellent The Ritual Productions, they have become one of the Scribe's favourite bands, so it was worth an interview!

Hello GOLIARD and thank you for answering my questions...You founded the band in 2010 in Medellin, Colombia...can you tell us the story of your band ?
Since 2008, Víctor had been working on a Black Metal project called Bohemian Euphony, when it dissolved, in 2010 he rescued some musical ideas and with a more ambitious lyrical concept and new members, Goliard would be shaped with the recording of Cantus Goliæ (2013 EP) which is a 4-track promo from the debut album, a couple of years later the definitive line-up with which the 3 full-length albums have been released is consolidated: Cadáver as drummer and lyricist supporter, Iván as bassist and composer, Cristian as lead guitar and musical arrangements, and Víctor founding member, as main composer, guitar and voice.
You will draw your influences from 90's black metal, which is the best ever made anyway. What do you think of black metal today ?
We think that black metal is today a whole world, lyrically, ideologically and musically, which allows us to create and listen to bands from 90's style to modern ones.
The black metal movement is dead but the music goes on...what's your inspiration ?
We do not believe the black metal movement is dead, perhaps there is a nostalgia for the past, but it must be understood, life itself is a constant movement and there is a lot of people wanting to maintain something eternal in its form, as indicated by the master Eliphas Levi, it is true death.
You are from Uruguay, even if you don't live there anymore, can you tell us about some bands from your country that you would like to support ?
We are all from Medellin city in Colombia. I believe that the vast majority of Colombian black metal bands have influenced us a lot, you should check bands like Infernal and Solemne Mortis.
I literally loved your last three albums! They are both anchored in classicism but full of rage and anger, where does this come from ?
We try to make our music complement the lyrical concept, we gave our third album a more existential approach, by the hand of authors such as Philippe Mainlander, Porfirio Barba Jacob, Cioran, among others.
What vision do you have of our present ? And our future ?
Our vision about the present or the future is very simple. We are a process among millions of processes, we are materialists in a philosophical sense, and we believe that there is not much distance between the present and the future, so everything is still very similar and in the end it doesn't matter where you come from or where you go, always you will end up in oblivion.
How did you get in touch with Jasper and The Ritual productions ?
Back in 2017, we were looking for a European label that would help us promote our project outside of South America, by chance, between mail and mail, Jasper and The Ritual Productions became interested in what Goliard was doing and we had the pleasure of working with him on 3 albums 'till the date.
Your future projects ?
A couple gigs, a split album or a fourth full length? I can only tell you, something will happen…

Windir, Emperor, Infernal (Col), Old Man's Child, in not a specific order

Bonjour GOLIARD et merci de répondre à mes questions...Tu as fondé le groupe en 2010 à Medellin, Colombie...peux-tu nous raconter l'histoire de ton groupe ?
Depuis 2008, Víctor travaillait sur un projet de Black Metal appelé Bohemian Euphony, quand il a été dissous, en 2010 il a sauvé quelques idées musicales et avec un concept lyrique plus ambitieux et de nouveaux membres, Goliard serait formé avec l'enregistrement de Cantus Goliæ (2013 EP) qui est une promo de 4 pistes du premier album, quelques années plus tard le line-up définitif avec lequel les 3 albums complets ont été publiés est consolidé : Cadáver comme batteur et auteur des paroles, Iván comme bassiste et compositeur, Cristian comme guitare principale et arrangements musicaux, et Víctor membre fondateur, comme compositeur principal, guitare et voix.
Vous tirez vos influences du black metal des années 90, qui est de toute façon le meilleur qui soit. Que pensez-vous du black metal aujourd'hui ?
Nous pensons que le black metal est aujourd'hui un monde à part entière, sur le plan lyrique, idéologique et musical, qui nous permet de créer et d'écouter des groupes allant du style des années 90 aux groupes modernes.
Le mouvement black metal est mort mais la musique continue... quelle est votre inspiration ?
Nous ne croyons pas que le mouvement black metal soit mort, il y a peut-être une nostalgie du passé, mais il faut comprendre que la vie elle-même est un mouvement constant et qu'il y a beaucoup de gens qui veulent maintenir quelque chose d'éternel dans sa forme, comme l'a indiqué le maître Eliphas Levi, c'est la vraie mort.
Tu es originaire d'Uruguay, même si tu n'y vis plus, peux-tu nous parler de certains groupes de ton pays que tu aimerais soutenir ?
Nous sommes tous originaires de la ville de Medellin en Colombie. Je crois que la grande majorité des groupes de black metal colombiens nous ont beaucoup influencés, vous devriez aller voir des groupes comme Infernal et Solemne Mortis.
J'ai littéralement adoré vos trois derniers albums ! Ils sont tous deux ancrés dans le classicisme mais pleins de rage et de colère, d'où cela vient-il ?
