From Anorexia Nervosa to Aevangelist : interview with/avec Stephane Gerbaud - french and english text

Stéphane Gerbaud fut, avec Anorexia Nervosa, a l'origine d'un album incroyable, largement sous-estimé a mon sens, "Exile". Nous parlons avec lui de ce disque, de son passé dans Anorexia Nervosa, mais aussi de son présent a bord du vaisseau amiral Aevangelist, où Stéphane s'est emparé du chant en lieu et place d'Ascaris, aux côtés de Matron Thorn. Nous abordons aussi sa vision du monde dans lequel nous vivons, le black metal contemporain et bien d'autres choses encore. Bonjour Stéphane, et merci de me donner un peu de ton temps pour répondre a mes questions ! Tu fus le premier chanteur des mythiques et controversés Anorexia Nervosa sur le premier album Exile. Peux tu nous raconter comment le groupe est né ? Comment tu t'es retrouvé parti prenante de cette histoire ?

Au début des années 90, dans notre petite ville, nous étions un groupe éparpillé de jeunes gens extrêmement tourmentés, en quête d'existence et fascinés par la mort et les musiques extrêmes. Nous nous sommes retrouvés à échanger autour des arts, de la philosophie. Certains d'entre nous ont formé un groupe en 1991, Necromancia, et d'autres se sont tournés vers la poésie et le roman avec une certaine reconnaissance. Si Necromancia a commencé à ses débuts comme un groupe classiquement Death Metal, nous nous sommes vite nourris de diverses influences venant des musiques extrêmes et de l'art en général. Notre musique s'est teintée de gothique et d'industriel. Nos jeux de scène se sont inspirés de l’Expressionnisme allemand, des films d'Eisenstein... La folie et le mal-être étaient des thèmes prédominants. En 1995, nous avons décidé de changer de nom pour qu'il soit plus adapté à ce que nous étions. Anorexia Nervosa naquit. Nous avons à ce moment là fait quelques concerts dans le sud de la France. Nos performances théâtrales, sombres et hantées étaient assez impressionnantes et très vite et ce malgré quelques différences musicales, nous avons été associés à la scène black métal émergente. En 1996, au début d'un de nos concerts dans le sud de la France, Cyril

Mendre de Drakkar Productions est venu nous interpeller, nous annonçant que Michael Berberian qui venait de fonder le label Season of Mist voulait nous signer après nous avoir vu dans un précédent concert et que s'il ne le faisait pas, lui-même nous signerait. Il nous a alors laissé pour écoute et réflexion sa première sortie, le premier album de Mütiilation: Vampires of Black Impérial Blood. L'histoire s'est écrite : nous avons signé avec Season of Mist pour l'album « Exile », label qui a fait un bon travail de promotion et qui nous a ouvert la porte de concerts très intéressants comme la première partie d’Enslaved et d’Absu par exemple.

Sur cet album vous déployiez un style différent de ce que le groupe fera avec Hreidmarr, très expérimental, avec un fond death metal plus présent et une noirceur psychopathique ! Dans quel état mental étais-tu a l'époque de cet album injustement sous-estimé selon moi ?

Exile a été conçu dans un état de mal être extrême, d'abnégation totale pour l'art et de doutes infinis sur nos existences. Cela a fini par ronger les liens que nous avions et par mettre un point final à cette première partie de la carrière d'Anorexia Nervosa. Je n'ai plus jamais écouté cet album intégralement, tellement le malaise est grand pour moi. La thématique de la folie est clairement prédominante et elle est en partie mienne. La musique d'Exile est fondée sur la structure décharnée et déstructurée des paroles. Un personnage replié sur lui rapporte son malaise devant la création... face au fait d'exister.

Le lien à la réalité est rompu. Il s'invente et recrée en lui une cosmogonie dans un monde hanté, peuplé d'entités. Ce sont les voix très différentes que j'incarne au long de l'album.

Pour toi c'était quoi Anorexia Nervosa ?

Nous étions un groupe sombre et radical avec une intention artistique forte.

Quel regard rétrospectif portes tu sur cette période, et, dans le même ordre d'idée, sur ce que le groupe a fait après ton départ ?

J'ai en moi très peu de souvenirs d'expériences réelles, de visages, de personnes... et je n'ai presque aucune émotion face aux images du passé. Je considère que le temps linéaire n'existe pas. Les temps et les différentes formes d'existences se mêlent et ne forment qu'un. Je considère ainsi qu'il existe différentes lignes de vie simultanées que nous pouvons emprunter ou quitter à différents moments de notre existence. Cette époque n'est donc pas éteinte. Elle vit toujours en moi et continue son chemin, comme une simple étape le long d'un cheminement d'une de mes formes d'expressions artistiques. Le chemin qu'Anorexia Nervosa a pris après mon départ est très différent de celui que nous avons suivi ensemble dans les années 90. Si le nom et certaines parties de l'esthétique demeurent, cela fait partie seulement de leurs histoires et intentions artistiques personnelles.

Personnellement j'entends des choses fort différentes sur Exile, y compris hors metal, des influences comme Christian Death (période Rozz Williams), Die Form ou Virgin Prunes...Suis je fou ? (réponse : oui!) 

Quelles étaient tes influences musicales a cette époque ?

Virgin Prunes était une influence pour le chant et l'aspect théâtral. Mes influences vocales conscientes étaient et sont très diverses et parfois très éloignées du metal. J'absorbe de nombreux types de chants. Les influences réelles sont pour moi clairement indéfinissables.

Lorsque j'écoute mes enregistrements, je ne reconnais pas ma voix... Je la perçois toujours comme Autre et j'ai la sensation d'avoir peu de prise sur ces présences qui viennent de cet intérieur ou de cet au-delà crépusculaire. Mon chant prend seulement forme à travers la transe et la possession et par une manifestation qui peut apparaître comme théâtrale, diverses voix s'expriment. Celles-ci sont pour moi différentes formes d'incarnations provenant de possibles existences, de temps ou d'univers connectés. C'est pourquoi le texte que j'écris pour un album, qui toujours se lit et se morcelle du début à la fin de l'album, a cette apparence.

J'insiste peut être mais je pense que Exile, sorti en 1997, mérite d'être largement réévalué tant il annonce toute la « 3ème vague » du bm dissonant, expérimental, aux rythmiques asthmatiques qui va arriver dans les années 2000...Vous étiez un peu trop en avance non ? Surtout en France ! (rires)

L'intention artistique d'Exile est ambitieuse. Sa forme laisse à penser que cet album est inachevé, brouillon et sans logique apparente. Cela est sûrement lié à son écriture dans le doute et la douleur et avec peut être aussi un peu trop d'empressement. Exile a été conçu comme s'il avait été l'unique réalisation et le point d'expression le plus éclatant de notre art. Nous l'avons réalisé dans l'isolement complet. Cela a peut être provoqué quelques erreurs qui ont fait que cet album était étrange et hors cadre en 1997. Il annonce toutefois les changements qui sont apparus dans les années 2000, le métal extrême devant à ce moment de son existence, se redéfinir et casser un peu ses codes et formes d'expressions trop surjoués et devenus un peu trop éloignés de l'intention originelle.

Comment as tu vécu la fin de ta contribution à AN ? Comment ça s'est passé ?

La fin réelle s'est passée dans la plus grande simplicité... bien que des choses plus graves furent sûrement ressenties. J’accueille toujours avec bienveillance le chaos et la destruction. Je pressens toujours que cela est source de régénération, de nouvelles, improbables et authentiques expériences.

Tu étais également chanteur dans le groupe Necromancia, qui fut l'ancêtre d'AN...Peux tu nous donner un ou deux souvenirs de cette époque (1994) ?

Les événements les plus notables étaient très certainement nos concerts. Tout notre art prenait sa forme d'expression la plus pleine à ces moments-là. Il existe je crois un seul enregistrement d'Anorexia Nervosa sur scène, de cette époque.

Tu me fais penser à Tom G Warrior dans ta façon d'aborder le chant...C'est un compliment assumé ! (lol) mais est ce un des chanteurs qui a influencé ta technique vocale ? En parlant de ça, ta voix est protéiforme, comment « mixe » tu toutes ces façons de chanter ?

Oui, ma voix est protéiforme car mes influences sont très diverses et parfois très éloignées du metal. Je ne peux pas vraiment donner d'influences directes. Toutes ses voix sont connectées comme je te l'expliquais précédemment.

En 2019 tu rejoins l'équipage d'Ævangelist, groupe de death/black américain expérimental fameux, aux côtés de Matron Thorn...Comment s'est opérée cette rencontre musicale ?

Nous nous sommes contactés, avons beaucoup parlé de notre approche de l'art et avons commencé à travailler ensemble sur des projets et ce avant la rupture avec le précédent vocaliste.

Finalement ce n'est pas si surprenant de te retrouver dans un groupe « perché » comme Ævangelist, vu ton passé. Comment as tu appréhendé le chant dans ce contexte ? Quelles étaient les demandes/exigences de Matron Thorn ?

Oui, c'est extrêmement cohérent de me retrouver dans Ævangelist. Notre approche de l'art est très similaire. La musique est pour nous quelque chose qui a à voir avec le rite et le mystique, une forme d'expression qui permet de toucher à la fois notre intériorité et la transcendance et qui prend chez nous la forme de la dissonance et du chaos organisé. La

musique est pour nous quelque chose de plus que la musique. Elle soutient nos âmes de l'effondrement et elle nous laisse entrevoir des horizons de vérité. Nous avons aussi tous les deux une approche très individuelle de l'art. Sa musique suit son propre cheminement intérieur. Mes textes et mes voix suivent le mien et j'y intègre le sien. Nous travaillons comme deux personnalités artistiques fortes côte à côte et avec une appréhension du monde très proche.

Matron Thorn connaît mon type de chant sur sa musique et l'anticipe.

Je ne vais pas te demander de commenter la « rupture » entre Matron Thorn et Ascaris, le chanteur/teuse originel du combo mais je voudrais juste connaître ton point de vue sur son travail artistique au fil des années (Ascaris) ?

J'apprécie bien évidemment son travail artistique et son apport passé à Ævangelist qui est pour moi depuis longtemps un des groupes les plus intéressant de la scène underground. Sa forme d'expression vocale lui est propre. Je suis depuis mon entrée dans ce groupe mon propre cheminement artistique.

Vas tu arriver à suivre la cadence infernale des sorties de Ævangelist (on sait Matron assez boulimique de travail!) ?

Nous travaillons sur bien plus d'albums et de EP que ce qui apparaît au grand jour et ce de manière simultanée. Le processus de création même s'il paraît foisonnant est en fait très lent en maturation. Le temps pour moi en amont, avant l'écriture de toute forme de texte, est très long. Toute écriture pour un album implique une abnégation pour laisser l'histoire apparaître. C'est un investissement spirituel qui implique de laisser la souffrance et la douleur du monde venir pleinement à soi. Quand toute la trame s'est écrite intérieurement, la concrétisation musicale peut être ensuite très rapide. Il faut alors seulement se laisser aller à être possédé par les entités.

Participes tu ou vas tu participer aux autres projets/groupes de Matron ?

Je me concentre entièrement sur Ævangelist qui est déjà un groupe à multi-projets. J'ai aussi posé avec sa participation le chemin de Messalians, un projet qui m'est tout personnel et pour lequel je laisse pleinement à toutes les pièces le temps de s'insérer.

Quelle est ta vision sur le bm contemporain ? Penses tu (comme moi) que des groupes comme Ævangelist, Blut Aus Nord/Yeruselem, Ulcerate ou autres Imperial Triumphant continuent de « faire avancer » le genre ?

Je le pense en effet. La scène black métal américaine, finlandaise, islandaise et française bien sûr est foisonnante de groupes très intéressants qui ont su renouveler le style et avec lesquels je me retrouve pleinement.

Peux tu nous parler de ton inspiration en matière d'écriture ? Des auteurs particuliers ? Des thèmes ?

J'ai de nombreuses inspirations littéraires et philosophiques enfouies en moi. J'ai été très inspiré par Artaud et Cioran dont je ne renie rien mais ce qui remonte à la surface actuellement serait William Blake pour son art visionnaire avec lequel je nous sens Matron Thorn et moi assez proche et Jorge Luis Borges.

Notre monde se fragmente, les clans se divisent et les communautés se retournent les unes contre les autres, comment vois tu tout cela finir ?

J'ai une vision sombre et apocalyptique de l'univers et ce avant même que de stupides agissements humains ne viennent la confirmer. Cela va très certainement se terminer dans le chaos et ce sera très bien.

Tes albums préférés de tous les temps ?

Mes albums préférés si je pouvais les compresser seraient un amas informe et déstructuré d'une infinité de bribes de musiques agglomérées à toutes les idées et sensations qui viennent avec.

"I have a dark and apocalyptic vision of the universe, even before stupid human actions confirm it"

Stéphane Gerbaud was, with Anorexia Nervosa, at the origin of an incredible album, largely underestimated in my opinion, "Exile". We talk with him about this record, about his past in Anorexia Nervosa, but also about his present aboard the flagship Aevangelist, where Stéphane took over the singing in place of Ascaris, alongside Matron Thorn. We also talk about his vision of the world we live in, contemporary black metal and much more. Have a good read, and don't hesitate to dive into the work of this great French BM.

Hello Stéphane, and thank you for giving me some of your time to answer my questions! You were the first singer of the mythical and controversial Anorexia Nervosa on the first album Exile. Can you tell us how the band was born ? How did you get involved in this story?

At the beginning of the 90s, in our small town, we were a scattered group of extremely tormented young people, in search of existence and fascinated by death and extreme music. We found ourselves exchanging ideas about the arts and philosophy. Some of us formed a group in 1991, Necromancia, and others turned to poetry and the novel with some recognition. If Necromancia started out as a classic Death Metal band, we soon fed on various influences coming from extreme music and art in general. Our music has been tinged with gothic and industrial influences. Our stage plays were inspired by German Expressionism, Eisenstein's films... Madness and unhappiness were predominant themes. In 1995, we decided to change our name to make it more appropriate to what we were. Anorexia Nervosa was born. At that time we did some concerts in the south of France. Our theatrical, dark and haunted performances were quite impressive and very soon, despite some musical differences, we were associated with the emerging black metal scene. In 1996, at the beginning of one of our concerts in the south of France, Cyril

Mendre from Drakkar Productions came to question us, announcing that Michael Berberian, who had just founded the Season of Mist label, wanted to sign us after having seen us in a previous concert and that if he didn't do it, he himself would sign us. He then left us his first release, Mütiilation's first album: Vampires of Black Imperial Blood. The story was written: we signed with Season of Mist for the album 'Exile', a label that did a good job of promoting it and opened the door to very interesting concerts like the opening for Enslaved and Absu for example.

On this album you deploy a different style from what the band will do with Hreidmarr, very experimental, with a more present death metal background and a psychopathic darkness! In which mental state were you at the time of this album unjustly underestimated according to me ?

Exile was conceived in a state of extreme malaise, total abnegation for art and infinite doubts about our existence. It ended up gnawing at the bonds we had and putting an end to this first part of Anorexia Nervosa's career. I have never listened to this album in its entirety again, so great is the uneasiness for me. The theme of madness is clearly predominant and it is partly mine. The

The music of Exile is based on the emaciated and destructured structure of the lyrics. A character folded in on himself reports his uneasiness in front of creation... in front of the fact of existing.

The link to reality is broken. He invents and recreates within himself a cosmogony in a haunted world, populated by entities. These are the very different voices that I embody throughout the album.

What was Anorexia Nervosa for you?

We were a dark and radical band with a strong artistic intention.

How do you look back on this period, and, in the same way, on what the band did after your departure ?

I have in me very few memories of real experiences, faces, people... and I have almost no emotions when faced with images from the past. I consider that linear time does not exist. Time and the different forms of existence are intertwined and form one. I thus consider that there are different simultaneous lines of life that we can take or leave at different moments of our existence. This era is therefore not extinct. It still lives in me and continues its path, as a simple step along the path of one of my forms of artistic expression. The path that Anorexia Nervosa took after my departure is very different from the one we followed together in the 90s. If the name and some parts of the aesthetic remain, it is only part of their personal stories and artistic intentions.

Personally I hear very different things on Exile, including outside metal, influences like Christian Death (Rozz Williams period), Die Form or Virgin Prunes...Am I crazy? (answer : yes!) 

What were your musical influences at that time ?

Virgin Prunes was an influence for the singing and the theatrical aspect. My conscious vocal influences were and are very diverse and sometimes very far from metal. I absorb many types of vocals. Real influences are clearly indefinable for me.

When I listen to my recordings, I don't recognise my voice? I always perceive it as Other and I have the feeling that I have little control over these presences that come from this interior or this twilight beyond. My singing only takes shape through trance and possession and through a manifestation that can appear as theatrical, various voices express themselves. These are for me different forms of incarnations coming from possible existences, times or connected universes. This is why the text I write for an album, which is always read and broken down from beginning to end, has this appearance.

I may insist, but I think that Exile, released in 1997, deserves to be widely re-evaluated as it announces the whole "3rd wave" of the dissonant, experimental bm with asthmatic rhythms that will arrive in the 2000s... You were a bit too early, weren't you? Especially in France! (laughs)

Exile's artistic intention is ambitious. Its form suggests that this album is unfinished, drafty and without apparent logic. This is surely linked to his writing in doubt and pain and perhaps with a little too much haste. Exile has been conceived as if it had been the sole achievement and the most striking point of expression of our art. We made it in complete isolation. This may have caused a few mistakes that made it strange and out of frame in 1997. However, it announces the changes that appeared in the 2000's, when extreme metal had to redefine itself and break a bit its codes and forms of expression that were too overplayed and became a bit too far from the original intention.

How did you experience the end of your contribution to AN? How did it go?

The real end happened in the simplest way... although more serious things were surely felt. I always welcome chaos and destruction. I always feel that it is a source of regeneration, of new, improbable and authentic experiences.

You were also a singer in the group Necromancia, which was the ancestor of AN...Can you give us one or two memories of that time (1994) ?

The most notable events were certainly our concerts. All our art took its fullest form of expression at those times. I believe there is only one recording of Anorexia Nervosa on stage from that time.

You remind me of Tom G Warrior in the way you approach singing...It's an assumed compliment! (lol) but is he one of the singers who influenced your vocal technique? Speaking of which, your voice is protean, how do you "mix" all these ways of singing?

Yes, my voice is protean because my influences are very diverse and sometimes very far from metal. I can't really give direct influences. All these voices are connected as I explained before.

In 2019 you join the crew of Ævangelist, a famous experimental American death/black band, alongside Matron Thorn...How did this musical encounter happen?

We contacted each other, talked a lot about our approach to art and started to work together on projects before the break with the previous vocalist.

In the end it is not so surprising to find yourself in a "weird" band like Ævangelist, given your past. How did you approach singing in this context? What were Matron Thorn's demands/requirements?

Yes, it makes a lot of sense to be in Ævangelist. Our approach to art is very similar. For us, music is something to do with rite and mysticism, a form of expression that allows us to touch both our interiority and transcendence and which takes the form of dissonance and organised chaos. The

music is for us something more than music. It sustains our souls from collapse and gives us glimpses of horizons of truth. We both also have a very individual approach to art. His music follows its own inner path. My lyrics and voices follow mine and I integrate hers. We work as two strong artistic personalities side by side and with a very close understanding of the world.

Matron Thorn knows my type of singing to his music and anticipates it.

I'm not going to ask you to comment on the 'break' between Matron Thorn and Ascaris, the original singer of the combo, but I would just like to know your point of view on his artistic work over the years (Ascaris)?

Of course I appreciate his artistic work and his past contribution to Ævangelist which has been for me for a long time one of the most interesting bands of the underground scene. His form of vocal expression is his own. I have been following my own artistic path since I joined this group.

Will you manage to follow the infernal rhythm of Ævangelist's releases (we know Matron is quite bulimic at work!)?

We are working on many more albums and EPs than what appears in the public eye, and this in a simultaneous way. The creative process, even if it seems to be abundant, is in fact very slow in maturation. The time it takes for me before writing any kind of text is very long. Any writing for an album implies self-sacrifice to let the story appear. It is a spiritual investment that involves letting the suffering and pain of the world come fully to oneself. When the whole plot has been written internally, the musical realisation can then be very quick. It is only then that one must let oneself be possessed by the entities.

Do you participate or will you participate in other Matron projects/groups?

I concentrate entirely on Ævangelist, which is already a multi-project group. I have also set out with his participation the path of Messalians, a project that is very personal to me and for which I fully leave all the pieces the time to fit in.

What is your vision on contemporary bm ? Do you think (like me) that groups like Ævangelist, Blut Aus Nord/Yeruselem, Ulcerate or other Imperial Triumphant continue to "advance" the genre ?

I do indeed think so. The American, Finnish, Icelandic and French black metal scene of course is full of very interesting bands that have been able to renew the style and with which I fully find myself.

Can you tell us about your inspiration in terms of writing ? About the authors, individuals? Themes?

I have many literary and philosophical inspirations buried within me. I was very inspired by Artaud and Cioran, which I do not deny but what comes to the surface nowadays would be William Blake for his visionary art with which I feel Matron Thorn and I are quite close and Jorge Luis Borges.

Our world is fragmenting, clans are dividing and communities are becoming more and more are turning against each other, how do you see it all ending?

I have a dark and apocalyptic vision of the universe, even before stupid human actions confirm it. It will most certainly end in chaos and that will be fine.

Your favourite albums of all time?

My favourite albums if I could compress them would be a shapeless, unstructured mass of an infinite number of bits and pieces of music that have all the ideas and sensations that come with them.
