Chronique - Mallephyr - Ruins Of Inner Composure - Epictural Production - 2024 - black metal

[ENG/FR] DEVIANT BLACK METAL OR POST-BLACK METAL ? interview with White Ward, from Ukraine

WHITE WARD BAND DEBEMUR MORTI LE SCRIBE

Hello, White Ward! Can you introduce the band to our readers?
Andrii Pechatkin:
Hello, Pierre! While Yurii, our guitarist and mastermind, prefers introducing White Ward as a deviant black metal band, I am usually more specific. White Ward is a post-black metal act from Odesa Ukraine that is heavily influenced by dark jazz and incorporates saxophone in the most unexpected moments. To my mind, this definition lets people understand what they are going to hear while listening to White Ward. However, too many expectations often lead to disappointment, so be careful with your thoughts and desires. As for White Ward, you will get a mix of Bohren & Der Club of Gore-styled dark jazz with quite melodic post-black with lots of saxophone solos.

You come from Odesa in Ukraine and the band was created back in 2012. Your first EP "Illusions" was released in 2012 and contained a melodic and melancholic Black Metal that can be described as Post-Black Metal, What were the band's influences at the beginning? What about today?

AP: If I’m not mistaken, I’m a member of the band since August 2014. At that time, the entire “Futility Report” was composed, so I cannot talk about the early influences. Yurii can shed light on more details. As for the new material, it has several sources of influence. Firstly, it is music and there is a plethora of different genres and artists we listen to - from various metal bands to the most minimalist electronic producers. Secondly, I’d like to mention the life experience of every White Ward member: we live different lives but every musician in the project has a unique story full of positive and negative elements that force us to escape into the music creating and playing it as we can. The third important influencer is cinematography. Yurii is a huge fan of different non-standard movies. Lust but not least, our music is formed by the books we read. My top authors from the perspective of the impact on “Love Exchange Failure” are Spengler, Freud, Jung, and Fromm.

Yurii Kazarian:

When we started White Ward (it was January of 2012, as I remember) we tried to play something like canonical primitive raw depressive black metal on rehearsal base in the style of bands such as Trist, Happy Days and Hypothermia. And at first, it was not a serious attempt to create something really cool. Maybe you still can find a demo record of the first version of the song “Walls”. It is really terrible!

But soon my music tastes and my worldview started to change as I began to listen to some new and different music. At this moment I discovered post-black metal and blackgaze. The raw “depressive suicidal” sound seemed no longer appealing to me, so I started rearranging old songs and riffs and created new songs. And as you can hear, “Illusions” is heavily influenced by such bands as Lifelover, Amesoeurs, Heretoir, Apati, Thranenkind, etc.

So much time passed from the moment of composing “Illusions,” and now I am a really different person. Nowadays, I listen to many kinds of music: jazz, classical music, industrial, dark folk, experimental, and noise electronics. I have very different tastes and understanding of art at all, but of course, I still don’t forget about the roots and metal is still my favorite genre of music. So, because of this, White Ward is still a metal band, and I don’t think that something will change in the future.

WHITE WARD BAND BLACK METAL LE SCRIBE
WHITE WARD BAND

The second EP, Riptide, was released in 2014. Always this bucolic atmosphere in the intro, with flowing water, and this clear guitar very post-rock. The mix, with the bass in front, adds a "rock" touch to what you do, a certain "groove". Often, we feel the opposition between a music rather close to the Shoegaze and this typically Black voice. How did you manage this balance? How do you compose your music?

YK: There was a funny situation with “Riptide” because this EP was completely composed by our past bass player and my good friend Vladimir (check his new band Schattenfall!). Initially, it had to be his solo project. But when it was recorded we decided to make it as White Ward release. So I just recorded guitars for this release. But I think it was really close to the White Ward style at that time.

If to speak about how I compose music, then I never especially manage the balance. I just create music. And If I have any idea, then I just try to put it in the song and check how it suits. And If it sounds cool to me, so why not use it?

Do you agree if I tell you that your music always seems to be in balance between light and darkness?

AP: Everyone perceives music in their unique way, but if you are talking about the balance between light and darkness, we should look at White Ward from the same position. I discovered the project before Yurii invited me to join it and long before we played our first gig. At that time, I also had a similar feeling, so I completely agree that these two instances are combined in harmony in the project’s music even despite the lyrics of the first LP.

YK: I think the perception of light and darkness is subjective and individual things. But I agree that our music contains many parts with various moods. And I think we can use such a word as “light” but in the context of something like “light sadness,” I suppose.

WHITE WARD AVANT GARDE BM LE SCRIBE

Your first album "Futility Report" was released in 2017. It also concretizes your signature with the excellent label Debemur Morti. Your music becomes more and more original, until you move away from what is called Post-Black Metal. Always this tension between black and white, light and darkness, with this saxophone that adds a new color to your music. Do you consider that White Ward includes some experimentation? Can you tell us about this beautiful album?

AP: As I’ve mentioned above, “Futility Report” was almost composed when I joined the band. Unfortunately, it took us almost three years to record it due to our stupidity and laziness. We were disbanded for almost a year during that period, so I didn’t even think that the album would be released.

Another fact about “Futility Report” is that we’ve been looking for a saxophonist for the same period year. It was quite hard to find someone who would combine the ability to play at a decent level and sense of the music we were playing. The initial idea was to add it to several parts of the album, but Alexey provided us with the ideas for all songs, completely changing the way White Ward sounds.

YK: I don’t think that creating “Futility Report” was an experiment in the true sense of this word. I think all the “experimental” parts were pretty spontaneous. As soon as we started to create songs for this album we recognized that some of the parts had a really jazzy and noir sound, so we decided that it would be really cool to record the saxophone for some song pieces. And when Alexei recorded saxophone for metal parts too, we realized that it can sound fully suitable there!

WHITE WARD FUTILITY REPORT AVANT GARDE BLACK METAL

The cover features a very religious staging. What about this dimension at White Ward? What are your philosophical, political, religious beliefs?

AP: Our band is beyond all these constructs while each band member has his own view on them. The ideas behind that band are closely related to psychology and culture, I think. Of course, philosophy, politics, and religion are inevitable parts of them, but we are exploring slightly different dimensions. On “Love Exchange Failure,” the main topic is that the inhabitants of megapolises and modern cities are indifferent to themselves, each other, and the surrounding world due to the intense pace of life. They oppose themselves to nature and become victims of overconsumption, destroying our world. Furthermore, modern individuals are always stressed and frightened of debts, economic crises, terrorism, other social classes, migrants, and so on and so forth. The fragile psyche is one pace away from collapse. Being always stressed, we cannot interact with each other normally. We cannot even treat ourselves as we should, not to mention the world around us. Thus, we face the love exchange failure caused by the current state of the global culture. Our goal was to attract the attention of our listeners to this problem, exploring it on the album. We also explore bullying and violence, burnout and professional deformation, psychotherapy and treatment, heredity and the interaction of generations.

On September 20, your second album "Love Excцhange Failure" will be released. We are immediately struck by the very urban cover, which contrasts with your old visuals. What does it mean? There are some really Jazz parts in this album, followed by pure Black Metal gusts... Wasn't it difficult to follow up on an album as sublime as "Futility Report"? How did you manage not to repeat yourself?

YK:  First of all, the new artwork means that we fully moved away from different “mystical” themes in our music. “Love Exchange Failure” is about real horrors in the real world. It is about things that every one of us can face while being part of modern society in modern megacities.

WHITE WARD UKRAINIAN POST BLACK METAL INTERVIEW

Regarding self-repeating, I think this problem may appear when you are not moving forward as personality and nothing changes in your life. I started to compose “Love Exchange Failure” in 2017 and there are about 2-3 years passed from the moment when “Futility Report” was almost composed. Many things changed from that moment and also my tastes, visions, and ideas. I realized that now I like much more “live” and smooth sound if we speak about calm and jazzy parts; much more aggressive and fast if we speak about metal. In about 2014-2015 I really liked music such as screamo and melodic hardcore, but then something happened with my perception again and I returned to more aggressive and fast metal music. So the changes in the sound of “Love Exchange Failure” compared to “Futility Report” was fully justified of my inner emotional feeling of the music.

WHITE WARD BAND DEBEMUR MORTI LE SCRIBE

In any case, it's an album that, once again, sets the bar very high! It seems like you don't give yourself any boundaries? What is the next step?

AP: Thank you! Setting the bar higher with each new release is our goal. Otherwise, creating new music would be less engaging. We already have many ideas about the new album and compose new material, but it is to early to talk about due to the lack of the final form. The next step is to push the bar a little bit higher!

YK: Bars exist to let us jump higher and higher over them. So for me, it is a kind of challenge - to make every next record better and better. But of course, it is an infinite process and it is really amazing.

Can you list your 20 favorite records ever?

YK: Here are the records that appeared in my mind first. It is very difficult to 20 best albums because there are much more many amazing albums in the world. And of course, it is not a rating - just 20 albums which are really important for me.

If it tell you the following names : Dodheimsgard, Solefald, Blut Aus Nord...What do they mean to you? What is your vision of Black Metal and all the sub genres that surround it?

YK: As for me, these bands are amazing musicians who create real art. They have their own vision and they aren't afraid to release it in music sharing with the world. And I think it is one of the more important things - not be afraid of any criticism towards deviations compared to more canonical artists and the common vision of art rooted in culture. These bands are avant-garde.

As for the question about black metal, it may be an eternal discussion which in fact is totally subjective. Because we can talk about black metal ideologically as much as technically. Everyone can decide for themselves iа black metal is atmospheric and dark guitar tremolos and blast beats first of all or ideology, which was also a pretty different from artist to the artist even in the early 90s. Anyway, I think nowadays, in the epoch of post-modernism, stylistic borders are almost invisible and numbers of subgenres are growing up every year.

How is your situation in Ukraine?

AP: You’ve probably heard about the Ukrainian black metal as a subgenre, so I don’t want to bother you describing more popular bands. However, the more underground scene always includes some truly unique projects, and one of them is Sectorial. These guys mix traditional but very fast black metal with Ukrainian folklore music and use tons of native instruments that perfectly complement their intense and furious sound. You can discover other underground bands in this genre, but this one is the most unique, I think.

From the perspective of live performances, we have several big festivals that usually invite some relatively popular names and provide underground bands with a chance to share their music. As for small shows, they don’t usually gather many people. More canonical black metal is more popular but underground bands also have their audience.

The AnarKist question : Add whatever you want (words, poems, pamphlet, whatever you want and the longuer you want)

AP: Be excellent to each other and don’t forget about nature and all creatures great and small. These are the things that really matter.

Thank you White Ward !

WHITE WARD DEVIANT BLACK METAL FROM UKRAINE

VERSION FRANCAISE

Bonjour, White Ward ! Pouvez-vous présenter le groupe à nos lecteurs ?

Andrii Pechatkin :

Bonjour, Pierre !

white ward love exchange failure

WHITE WARD UKRAINIEN POST UKRAINIEN BLACK METAL INTERVIEW
