INTERVIEW AVEC MEMBRANE : Au delà de vos croyances - French + English Text - Post Hardcore/Noise Rock

Bonjour Membrane, et soyez les bienvenus dans le Scribe du Rock !
Vous existez depuis le début des années 2000 et vous oeuvrez dans
une fusion entre noise rock et post Hardcore, pour
simplifier...Pouvez vous nous présenter le groupe plus en
détails ?
Oui
les débuts du groupe datent de 2000. Mais le groupe a plusieurs fois
changé de line up. La musique a pas mal évolué, tout en gardant
une certaine base. On est, à l'heure actuelle, trois dans Membrane :
Nico Frère (Guitare/chant) ; Nico Cagnoni (Basse/chant) et Max
(batterie). On a sorti 6 albums, quelques EPs, splits (avec Sofy
Major et Revok) et dautres trucs comme des particpations à des
tributes (à Unsane et Tantrum).
Votre dernier album Beyond Your Beliefs est bluffant car vous avez
réussi une combinaison inouïe entre le côté décalé du noise
rock, l'obscurité ultra-lourde du post core, des passages aériens
dignes d'un Pink Floyd ou d'un Godspeed You ! Black Emperor, le
chant m'a même rappelé Perry Farrell de Jane's Addiction par
moments ! Comment s'est opérée cette alchimie ?
L'idée
s'était, pour une fois, de faire un album lourd et atmosphèrique du
début à la fin. On a déjà des morceaux lourds dans les précédents
albums mais pas sur un album complet. En même temps, on ne se
considère pas comme un groupe de metal, les riffs de Nico sont très
noisy 90s, du coup cela donne un mélange que l'on pense intéressant.
Nico est fan de Godspeed You ! Donc tu vises juste. En ce qui
concerne, le chant, c'est marrant, c'est la première qu'on nous dit
ça. Je pense que c'est touche 90's qui te fait penser ça, c'est
interessant.
Votre album dégage une atmosphère très noire, très triste, or je
sais que vous avez perdu un être cher récemment... Est ce aussi dû
à l'ambiance de déprime générale dans laquelle nous
vivons ?
C'est
plutôt la deuxième option car Mathieu allait très bien lorsqu'on a
composé l'album.
Au niveau des influences musicales, on vous imagine plutôt clients
de Unsane avec qui vous avez tourné, mais pouvez vous nous parler
des formations qui vous ont le plus marqués ?
On
est très fan d'Unsane et en plus c'est des mecs cools. Neurosis nous
a également beaucoup marqué mais on a hélas jamais joué avec eux.
Nos influences sont très variées, cela va de la noise, à l'indus,
au doom, au Hardcore en passant par la folk avec des artistes comme
Wovenhand, Emma Ruth Rundle, Type O Negative, Amen Ra, Breach, Will
Haven, Big Brave, Cult of Luna...
Comment s'est faite la rencontre avec Krys de Source Atone Records ?
Très
simplement, on repéré le label avec ses premières sorties (Junon,
Nefastes) et on a envoyé le mastering de l'album, ils ont répondu
quasi le jour même. On ne connaissait pas Krys avant ça. On peut
dire que ça tombait parfaitement bien et les gars du label sont
vraiment cools et motivés.
Si Membrane devait être un proverbe ou une citation ça donnerait quoi ?
Noise
un jour, Noise toujours ! Ahahah nan je ne sais pas. Ne rien
lâcher, évoluer, créer, tant qu'on a toujours cette envie, on sera
là.
Vous qui êtes passés par la Russie par le passé quel est votre regard sur ce qui se passe en ce moment en Ukraine ?
On
est franchement dégoûtés, que ça soit pour les Ukrainiens mais
aussi pour beaucoup de Russes. On s'est fait des amis là bas et je
peux te dire qu'ils ne sont pas du tout pour cette guerre. Et c'est
rageant parce que ça sent pas bon là bas depuis 2014 mais l'Europe
et les Etats Unis ont laissé macérer les choses. C'était
irresponsable avec du recul. En tout cas j'espère que Poutine sera
jugé pour ses crimes.
Le titre de l'album peut se traduire par « au dela de vos
croyances »...Pouvez vous nous parler de la signification de ce
titre et, au delà, des paroles des chansons ?
Le
titres et les paroles sont à l'interpretation de chacun. Nico écrit
des paroles assez imagées. Elles traîtent notamment de ces deux
dernières années compliquées, des croyances, des problèmes qu'il
a rencontré... Globalement c'est assez sombre.

Hello Membrane, and welcome to the Rock Scribe!
You've been around since the early 2000's and you work in a fusion between noise rock and post hardcore, to put it simply...Can you present the band in more detail?
Yes, the band started in 2000. But the band has changed its line up several times. The music has evolved quite a bit, while keeping a certain base. There are currently three of us in Membrane: Nico Frère (guitar/vocals), Nico Cagnoni (bass/vocals) and Max (drums). We have released 6 albums, a few EPs, splits (with Sofy Major and Revok) and other stuff like tributes (to Unsane and Tantrum).
Your last album Beyond Your Beliefs is amazing because you managed to combine the quirky side of noise rock, the ultra-heavy darkness of post-core, aerial passages worthy of a Pink Floyd or a Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the vocals even reminded me of Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction at times! How did this alchemy come about?
The idea was, for once, to make a heavy and atmospheric album from start to finish. We already have heavy tracks in the previous albums but not on a full album. At the same time, we don't consider ourselves as a metal band, Nico's riffs are very 90s noisy, so it gives a mix that we think is interesting. Nico is a fan of Godspeed You! So you're right on target. As far as the vocals are concerned, it's funny, it's the first time we've heard that. I think it's the 90's touch that makes you think that, it's interesting.
Your album has a very dark, sad atmosphere, and I know you lost a loved one recently... Is it also due to the general depressive atmosphere we live in ?
It's rather the second option because Mathieu was fine when we composed the album.
As far as musical influences are concerned, we can imagine you being Unsane's clients, but can you tell us about the bands that have influenced you the most?
We're big fans of Unsane and they're cool guys. Neurosis also had a big impact on us but we never played with them. Our influences are very varied, it goes from noise, to indus, to doom, to hardcore and folk with artists like Wovenhand, Emma Ruth Rundle, Type O Negative, Amen Ra, Breach, Will Haven, Big Brave, Cult of Luna...
How did you meet Krys from Source Atone Records?
Very simply, we spotted the label with its first releases (Juno, Nefastes) and we sent the mastering of the album, they answered almost the same day. We didn't know Krys before that. I guess you could say it was perfect timing and the guys at the label are really cool and motivated.
If Membrane had to be a proverb or a quote, what would it be?
Once a noise, always a noise! Ahahah nah I don't know. Don't give up, evolve, create, as long as we still have this desire, we will be there.
You have been to Russia in the past, what is your view on what is happening in Ukraine at the moment?
We are frankly disgusted, both for the Ukrainians and for many Russians. We made friends there and I can tell you that they are not at all for this war. And it's infuriating because it's not looking good over there since 2014 but Europe and the United States have let things macerate. It was irresponsible in retrospect. In any case I hope Putin will be judged for his crimes.
The title of the album is "beyond your beliefs"...Can you tell us about the meaning of this title and, beyond that, the lyrics of the songs?
The title and the lyrics are up to each person's interpretation. Nico writes rather graphic lyrics. They are about the last two years of complicated life, beliefs, problems he had... Overall it's quite dark.
