Après la grosse claque que je me suis pris avec le dernier Ferriterium (Calvaire dont vous pouvez lire la chronique ICI et dont je ne peux qu'à nouveau recommander l'absolue nécessité de vous le procurer) je ne pouvais que m'intéresser de près a la nouvelle sortie du label Epictural Production, qui a sorti Ferriterium (et est géré par Raido, de Ferriterium, la boucle est bouclée. Quand ce dernier m'a appris qu'en plus la sortie en question serait un groupe de DSBM composé de membres prestigieux comme Apathy (de Karne), Psycho (Hats Barn, Lord Ketil) au chant partagé, entourés par le compositeur et auteur des textes Thomas Allam (que l'on retrouve aussi à la lead guitar et a la batterie), accompagnés par John Monier (basse, claviers, enregistrement et mix) et Visceral Vince à la guitare solo, je ne pouvais que m'enthousiasmer.

Voici donc venir le premier album d'Endless Funeral, Le Grand Silence.

Introduit par un poème de Pierre Gabriel (dont on retrouve deux autres textes lus par Loic Risser) l'album s'installe dans un climat de mélancolie poétique tout a fait savoureuse. La poésie que l'on retrouve aussi dans les textes particulièrement bien écrits de Thomas Allam ou s'exprime la douleur, la mort incarnée par le silence, ce vide soudain qui se fait tout autour. Quand la guitare classique de Jeremie Kubler s'en vient, rappelant parfois Rodrigo et son Concerto Pour Aranjuez, l'ambiance pluvieuse et mélancolique prend une nouvelle ampleur. Le black metal triste et endeuillé de Endless Funeral peut parfois partir dans quelques embardées blastées mais c'est bien dans un mid-tempo plutôt lent qu'il s'installe le mieux, laissant toute place aux voix écorchées et emplies de malheur, aux toiles tissées par les guitares parfois pas si loin du post-punk. Si Endless Funeral est bien plus extrême qu'un groupe comme Alcest, il n'en garde pas moins lui aussi une predilection pour les mélodies, mais ici il est question de mélodies vénéneuses et funéraires. Les moments d'accalmie (dans "Des Souvenirs Et Des Cendres", un passage éthéré vient succéder a une bourrasque franchement black).

Cet EP de quatre titres longs (on peut aussi le considérer comme un album, avec ses quasi-quarante minutes) est une excellente carte visite pour le groupe qui fait preuve ici d'originalité dans un genre (le dsbm) parfois trop codifié. Ici les atmosphères, à la fois sombres et féeriques, prédominent sur toute volonté de faire peur aux bourgeois ou de montrer qu'on est le groupe le plus suicidaire du monde. Pourtant, ce grand silence est bel et bien empli de sentiments liés a notre disparition inévitable et prochaine, mais le groupe a joué ici la carte de la finesse, reprenant les choses là où les poètes du 19ème (Baudelaire en tête) les avaient laissées. 

Le Grand Silence est un album qui résonnera longtemps après son écoute, et l'envie d'y retourner sera trop forte. Méfiez vous néanmoins de ses atours séduisants et mélodieux, le venin qu'il distille n'en est pas moins toxique. Un grand disque !

After the shock I took with the last Ferriterium (Calvaire of which you can read the review HERE and of which I can only recommend again the absolute necessity to get it for you) I could only take a close interest in the new release of the label Epictural Production, which has released Ferriterium (and is managed by Raido, of Ferriterium, the loop is closed. When the latter told me that the release in question would be a DSBM band composed of prestigious members such as Apathy (de Karne), Psycho (Hats Barn, Lord Ketil) with shared vocals, surrounded by the composer and lyricist Thomas Allam (also on lead guitar and drums), accompanied by John Monier (bass, keyboards, recording and mix) and Visceral Vince on lead guitar, I could only get excited.

So here comes the first album of Endless Funeral, Le Grand Silence.

Introduced by a poem by Pierre Gabriel (of which we find two other texts read by Loic Risser) the album settles in a climate of poetic melancholy quite tasty. The poetry that we also find in the particularly well written texts of Thomas Allam where expresses the pain, the death embodied by silence, this sudden emptiness that is all around. When Jeremie Kubler's classical guitar comes along, sometimes reminiscent of Rodrigo and his Concerto Pour Aranjuez, the rainy and melancholic atmosphere takes on a new dimension. The sad and mournful black metal of Endless Funeral can sometimes leave in a few blasted swerves but it is in a rather slow mid-tempo that it settles best, leaving all place to the voices flayed and filled with misfortune, to the webs woven by the guitars sometimes not so far from post-punk. If Endless Funeral is much more extreme than a band like Alcest, he also keeps a predilection for melodies, but here it is about poisonous and funeral melodies. Moments of lull (in "Des Souvenirs Et Des Cendres", an ethereal passage comes after a frankly black gust of wind).

This EP of four long tracks (we can also consider it as an album, with its almost forty minutes) is an excellent visiting card for the band which shows here originality in a genre (the dsbm) sometimes too codified. Here the atmospheres, at the same time dark and enchanting, prevail over any will to scare the bourgeois or to show that we are the most suicidal band in the world. However, this great silence is indeed filled with feelings linked to our inevitable and forthcoming disappearance, but the group has played the card of finesse here, taking things back where the poets of the 19th century (Baudelaire in mind) had left them. 

Le Grand Silence is an album that will resonate long after listening to it, and the desire to return to it will be too strong. Beware nevertheless of its seductive and melodious finery, the venom it distils is no less toxic. A great record!
