Review - Griiim - Bête Immonde - Purity Through Fire - 2020 - Experimental black metal
En ces temps troublés nous avons tous besoin de repères. Bien sûr ces derniers peuvent largement varier d'une personne à l'autre, en fonction de notre culture, de notre âge, de notre niveau d'éducation. Ainsi, je conseille d'emblée aux intégristes à deux euros pour qui le black metal doit sonner "comme ça" et pas "comme ceci" d'aller jouer dans un autre bac a sable. Griiim, et donc Maxime Taccardi, n'a rien a foutre du purisme, et pourtant son oeuvre, que ce soit avec Griiim ou KFR, est sans doute la plus proche de l'obscurité et de la démence incarnée par les black legions aux temps jadis...
Maxime, grand plasticien reconnu, est un musicien passionnant. Si vous suivez le scribe, vous savez déjà tout le bien que je pense de son travail (si besoin vous retrouverez les liens en bas de page). Maxime incarne pour moi l'essence de ce que le black metal peut-être en 2020 : Griiim ne peut pas être réduit a un style, brassant influences necro-black avec des beats hip hop, des sonorités indus/noise et des touches world music ici et là. Cette "Bête Immonde" est la suite directe de "Pope Art", chef d'oeuvre du même Griiim publié en 2019 (numéro cinq dans mon top albums 2019). Chez Griiim, encore une fois, se brouillent les repères, et la folie non simulée de Maxime nous glace une fois encore les sangs. Ce qu'il y a de black metal chez Griiim c'est justement cette absence de volonté de se cantonner musicalement, tout en restant dédié a la démence et aux ténèbres les plus opaques (essayez "Nymphe Décharnée" et vous verrez ce que je veux dire).
Je n'ai pas peur d'inscrire la démarche de Griiim dans les traces de sang encore fraiches de Vorbd Na R.iidr et son Bèlkètre. Cette même absence de barrières les caractérise, et en font un objet musical d'une puissance folle.
Ainsi, quand résonnent les chants negro spirituals de "Bête Immonde" on pense bien un instant aux débuts de Zeal And Ardor, mais un Manuel Gagneux qui aurait perdu définitivement la raison.
Merci Maxime pour cette oeuvre maudite et sublime, tu fais beaucoup pour sauver le metal noir d'une déchéance due a un trop plein de sorties inutiles.

So, I would immediately advise the two-euro fundamentalists for whom black metal should sound "like this" and not "like this" to go and play in another sandbox. Griiim, and therefore Maxime Taccardi, doesn't give a damn about purism, and yet his work, whether it's with Griiim or KFR, is undoubtedly the closest to the darkness and madness embodied by the black legions in the old days...
Maxime, a great recognized visual artist, is a fascinating musician. If you follow the scribe, you already know all the good that I think of his work (if you need you will find the links at the bottom of the page). Maxime embodies for me the essence of what black metal may be in 2020 : Griiim cannot be reduced to a style, mixing necro-black influences with hip hop beats, indus/noise sounds and world music touches here and there. This "Immunda Beast" is the direct continuation of "Pope Art", a masterpiece of the same Griiim released in 2019 (number five in my top albums 2019). Once again, Griiim's work is blurring the markers, and Maxime's non simulated madness is once again freezing our bloods. What's black metal about Griiim is precisely this lack of will to confine oneself musically, while remaining dedicated to insanity and the most opaque darkness (try "Nymphe Décharnée" and you'll see what I mean).
I am not afraid to inscribe Griiim's approach in the still fresh traces of blood of Vorbd Na R.iidr and his Bèlkètre. This same lack of barriers characterises them, and makes them a musical object of mad power.
Thus, when the negro spiritual in "Bête Immonde" resound, one thinks for a moment of the beginnings of Zeal And Ardor, but a Manuel Gagneux who would have lost his mind for good.
Thank you Maxime for this cursed and sublime work, you do a lot to save black metal from a decline due to too many useless releases.
