Dire que j'ai apprécié les deux EPs des nordistes de Nornes serait un doux euphémisme ! Leur Doom Metal profond et habité me hante littéralement. Avec des influences diverses venant aussi bien de Candlemass, du Doom/Death des 90's que du Rock Psyché typé 70's, le groupe a de quoi vous posséder avec son spectre large. Avec un deuxième EP encore plus mélodique que le premier, au sein duquel on découvre aussi des relents Grungo/Stoner, il serait clairement indécent de passer à côté de cette petite merveille. En attendant un premier album qui sera forcément un événement, je vous laisse avec ces lascars qui vont vous raconter leur histoire, vous parler de leur vision de la musique...A noter que cet entretien a été réalisé juste avant que la pandémie de Covid-19 nous pète a la gueule avec sa cohorte de mauvaises nouvelles, ce qui explique ces questions concernant la scène, qui peuvent sembler tristement incongrues en ce moment...

Nornes ! Et merci de répondre aux élucubrations du Scribe ! Première chose,
pour les lecteurs qui ne seraient pas encore tombés dans vos filets, pouvez
vous nous présenter le groupe, sa formation, ses origines, son but initial ?
Rom
: Formation de la région Valenciennoise et Lilloise qui a près de 3 ans
d'existence composée de Davy (guitare), Julien (basse/chant) Stéphane
(batterie) et Romain (guitare/chant).
Un
unique but : être les dévots du doom , de déverser ce que l’on a de plus
profond.
Vous avez récemment sorti le splendide EP
“Vanity” que j'avoue avoir beaucoup apprécié (cf ma chronique !). Pouvez vous
nous parler un peu de ce projet, comment en êtes vous venus a bout ?

: Encore merci pour ce retour positif !
Notre
premier EP est sorti en Mai 2018 en autoproduction grâce à une de nos
connaissances, Guillaume Delachat. Il a assuré aisément mix/mastering et a su
prendre la direction qu’il nous fallait en terme de son. Froid et pesant .
Vanity
est notre premier volet . Nous avons voulu aborder le rapport au temps, la
vacuité des passions de l’homme, la place que l’on peut occuper à un moment de
sa vie et la perdre la fraction de seconde suivante quand le destin en a choisi
autrement … Ce sont des thèmes qui nous tiennent à coeur.
Vous
naviguez en pleine mer Doom Metal, avec des liens avec le Doom classique, mais
aussi le Funeral Doom et le Doom/Death...Pouvez vous nous parler de vos
influences ?
Rom
: Nous sommes tous passionnés de musique et sommes ouverts à la diversité .
Pour ce qui est des influences en matière,
il y a bien sûr Candlemass, Saint Vitus mais aussi My Dying Bride,
Paradise Lost ou encore In The Woods…Trouble, Pallbearer, Yob ou encore
BellWitch. De l’ancienne à la nouvelle école. Nous travaillons à développer
notre propre patte sonore pour nous démarquer.
Davy :
En effet on ratisse assez large dans le style, on aime presque tout ce qui
c’est fait depuis Epicus Doomicus Metallicus de Candlemass.
Stooph :
pour ma part aucune limite quand a mes influences musicales, tant que ca sonne
honnête et vrai.
je pense que
mes parties batteries dans Nornes viennent du rock psyché/prog et du rock des
années 70 ainsi que du métal de manière générale
Vous
sortez un nouvel EP ce mois ci (fin de mois) qui va s'appeler “Threads”. Doit
on s'attendre a la même formule chimique entre Rock'n'Roll Occulte et gros Doom
qui plombe ? J'ai écouté le premier extrait “Burning Bridges” et le moins que
l'on puisse dire c'est que vous ne faites toujours pas dans le léger, néanmoins
la mélodie semble encore plus présente, non ? Le reste de l'EP sera comme ça ?
Davy :
On a voulu cet EP « THREADS » dans la continuité de Vanity. Tout
d’abord parce qu’on voulait confirmer assez rapidement ce qu’on avait proposé
avec le 1er EP et les lives qui ont suivi. Aussi parce qu’on avait
déjà des morceaux tout frais mais qu’on n’avait pas eu l’occasion de pratiquer
pour l’enregistrement. Et en effet avec l’arrivé de Davy en second guitariste,
les morceaux se sont faits un peu plus mélodiques. On voulait exploiter cette 2nde
guitare, et toujours en gardant cet esprit bien doom du poids de fatalité.
Votre
nom, Nornes, renvoie à la mythologie nordique alors que sur “Vanity” vous
exposez...des vanités (normal) qui font davantage penser à la nécromancie et à
l'occultisme...Où vous situez vous sur un plan spirituel ?
Stooph :
effectivement, on a longuement cherché un nom de groupe qui renvoyait à une
certaine part de mystère et de croyances inconnues qui constituent certains
éléments de nos vies
Il est très
excitant de penser que quelque chose nous échappe, que l’on ne maîtrise pas
tout.
On remet nos
existences à des forces, des énergies et on aime imaginer que l’on y peut rien,
que tout est déjà écrit. Mais cela ne nous empêche pas de tirer certaines
ficelles existentielles...
Julien: Les
nornes sont trois divinités nordiques représentants le passé, le présent et le
futur. Elles tissent ensemble le fil du destin des hommes. Vanity parle du sens
que l’on essaie de donner à nos vies, de notre place dans ce monde et des choix
qui s’offrent à nous sur l'échiquier de notre existence. La pochette de l’EP
“Vanity” illustre le fait que l’homme a tendance à oublier que sa vie prendra
fin, ce qui est pur vanité.
Nous
pourrions dire en résumé que spirituellement tout à un lien.
Vous
êtes balèzes car vous arrivez à me rappeler My Dying Bride et Coven en même
temps, mais comment vous faites ?
Davy :
My Dying Bride, c’est certain. Je les suis depuis les débuts. Ils auront marqué
tout mon parcours musical.

: L’air Valenciennois nous donne cette nostalgie des plus grands !
Stooph
: ce n’est pas forcément voulu, la faute a nos très nombreuses influences
J'ai
pensé aussi à Nirvana et aux Melvins par moments en vous écoutant...C'est grave
docteur ?
Rom
: Nullement , nous adorons des chanteurs grunge type Layne Staley, Jerry
Cantrell, Chris Cornell ou encore Eddie Vedder…
Stooph :
venant à la base du punk, du grunge, je suis super content que tu y trouves des
influences, Dave Grohl est pour moi unique en son genre, avec un jeu puissant,
une identité propre, un super batteur instinctif comme on a du mal à en trouver
aujourd’hui.
Votre
musique fait planer comme un vrai truc de hippie psyché et nous plombe comme un
Black Sabbath en pleine dépression...Ca vous convient ?
L’essentiel
est que chaque qui nous écoute se dise qu’il a passé un bon moment et a
ressenti ce que nous avons voulu transmettre par notre musique et nos textes.
C’est ce que nous cherchons également en live; emmener l’auditoire !
Stooph
: de plus en plus après les lives, des gens viennent nous voir pour nous dire à
quel point on les a transporté pendant notre set. Cela joue certainement en
notre faveur et contribue à consolider le bloc musical et l'identité de Nornes
La scène
? Ça se passe comment ?
Plutôt
pas mal. Nous avons de belles dates pour ce début d’année 2020 avec
Witchfinder, The Gates of Slumber, la release du EP et quelques petits fest.
Stooph
: on va essayer de pousser certaines portes ( festivals et salles ). On espère
que ça va fonctionner, on a tellement envie de s’exprimer et de diffuser notre
musique!

Doom Metal
Nous retournons en territoire Doom Metal avec Nornes, groupe de Valenciennes qui propose ici un EP trois titres particulièrement intéressant. Tout d'abord, le style pratiqué par le groupe, pas si commun. En effet, en matière de Doom, il y a souvent ceux qui proposent un Doom "traditionnel" (école Candlemass ou Cathedral) ancré dans les bases 70's du genre, et ceux qui vont fureter du côté des extrêmes (Doom/Death ou Funeral Doom). Eh bien nos amis du chnors vont taper un peu dans toutes ces catégories sans jamais se disperser. Leur Doom est à la fois fidèle à ses racines rock'n'roll mélancolique de hippies déprimés et pas invités à la fête et va chercher aussi du côté du Doom/Death (les voix, passant du son clair au growling avec aisance, les guitares qui savent groover mais aussi plomber l'ambiance). Avec Nornes, c'est un peu comme si on touchait à la quintessence du genre, une espèce de "best of doom" mais, encore une fois, jamais "soupe de fèves" et toujours au service de titres particulièrement aboutis.
Du côté de l'artwork, comme vous le voyez ci-dessus, le groupe est allé du côté occulte et mystique.
Le désespoir inhérent au Doom est ici palpable, au travers d'ambiances profondément mélancoliques, tout en gardant en tête que le but est bien de créer des chansons. Imaginez Cathedral, Pallbearer et Skepticism faisant une bouffe ensemble (dans le noir avec des bougies bien sûr) et décidant de fusionner en une seule entité et vous aurez une (petite) idée de ce que Nornes exprime. Le mieux étant bien sûr de se jeter sur ce premier Ep qui présage d'un bel avenir pour ce groupe plus que prometteur !
Doom Metal
Si vous suivez régulièrement le Scribe, vous êtes forcément tombés sur la chronique que j'avais faite du premier EP de Nornes, Vanity, sorti en 2018, sinon, la voici :
Je pourrai presque reprendre les mêmes mots pour ce nouvel EP du trio de Valenciennes. En tous cas en termes d'enthousiasme, car le nouvel opus n'est pas une redite du premier, plutôt un complément. Poussant encore plus loin leurs capacités mélodiques (comme sur le sublime "Hurt" (qui me fait penser aux odes les plus mélancoliques de Bathory qui auraient emprunté un chemin plus Doom), les gars n'en n'oublient pas pour autant leur goût pour l'extrême, comme avec ce "Near Death" à l'intro blastée façon Black Metal, pour ensuite aller fureter sur un territoire mixte composé de Doom/Death digne de My Dying Bride et de Doom 70's mélodieux et très rock dans l'intention (pas si loin du meilleur Katatonia, avec une touche presque Grunge par moments).
Bref, comme je l'avais dit pour Vanity, ces trois chtis gars du Nord sont passés maîtres dans l'art de
mixer toutes les formes de Doom, sans jamais donner la sensation de se mélanger les pinceaux. Encore plus abouti que leur premier EP, celui-ci est un véritable voyage dans le meilleur de ce Metal lourd et rampant avec, en guise d'apothéose, un "Burning Bridges" de presque 8 minutes qui condense toutes les facettes de ce trio absolument fascinant. Quand je réalise les "trips" musicaux que sont leurs EPs j'en viens à rêver d'un long format, même si, je l'avoue, ces formats courts ont l'avantage de laisser un peu sur sa faim et donc d'en vouloir encore plus. Du coup, je pousse la touche "play" et j'y retourne.
Honnêtement, si vous aimez le Doom, le Metal en général et même le Rock je vous conseille vivement, si ce n'est fait, d'aller plonger dans les volutes mélancoliques de la fumée chamanique de la musique de Nornes. Une merveille !

To say that I enjoyed the two EPs of Nornes' Nornes would be a sweet euphemism! Their deep and inhabited Doom Metal literally haunts me. With diverse influences from Candlemass, 90's Doom/Death and 70's Psychedelic Rock, the band has what it takes to possess you with its broad spectrum. With a second EP even more melodic than the first one, in which we also discover Grungo/Stoner hints, it would be clearly indecent to miss this little marvel. While waiting for a first album that will necessarily be an event, I leave you with these lascars who will tell you their story, talk to you about their vision of music... Note that this interview was made just before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out with its cohort of bad news, which explains these questions about the scene, which may seem sadly incongruous at the moment.

Hello Nornes! And thank you for answering the Scribe's elucubrations! First of all, for the readers who wouldn't have fallen into your nets yet, can you introduce us to the band, its formation, its origins, its initial goal?
Rom : A band from the Valenciennes and Lille region which has been in existence for almost 3 years and is composed of Davy (guitar), Julien (bass/vocals), Stéphane (drums) and Romain (guitar/vocals).
A single goal: to be the devotees of the doom, to pour out what we have deepest.
You recently released the splendid EP "Vanity" that I must admit I really enjoyed (see my review!). Can you tell us a little bit about this project, how did you manage to do it ?
Rom : Thanks again for the positive feedback!
Our first EP was released in May 2018 in self-production thanks to one of our acquaintances, Guillaume Delachat. He was able to mix/master easily and took the direction we needed in terms of sound. Cold and heavy.
Vanity is our first part . We wanted to address the relationship with time, the emptiness of human passions, the place that one can occupy at one moment of one's life and lose it the next fraction of a second when destiny has chosen otherwise ... These are themes that are close to our hearts.
You're sailing in Doom Metal, with links to classic Doom, but also Funeral Doom and Doom/Death...Can you tell us about your influences ?
Rom : We are all passionate about music and are open to diversity . As far as influences are concerned, there is of course Candlemass, Saint Vitus but also My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost or In The Woods...Trouble, Pallbearer, Yob or BellWitch. From the old to the new school. We're working on developing our own soundtrack to stand out from the crowd.
Davy : Indeed we're raking pretty wide in style, we like almost everything that's been done since Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass.
Stooph : For me there's no limit to my musical influences, as long as it sounds honest and true.
I think my drum parts in Nornes come from psychedelic/prog and 70's rock and metal in general.
You're releasing a new EP this month (end of month) which will be called "Threads". Should we expect the same chemical formula between Occult Rock'n'Roll and Big Doom that plummets ? I listened to the first single "Burning Bridges" and the least we can say is that you still don't do in the light, nevertheless the melody seems even more present, don't you ? The rest of the EP will be like that?
Davy: We wanted this "THREADS" EP to be a continuation of Vanity. First of all because we wanted to confirm quickly what we had proposed with the first EP and the lives that followed. Also because we already had some fresh tracks but we didn't have the opportunity to practice for the recording. And indeed, with the arrival of Davy as second guitarist, the songs became a little more melodic. We wanted to exploit this second guitar, and always keeping this well doom spirit of the fatality weight.
Your name, Nornes, refers to the Nordic mythology whereas on "Vanity" you expose...vanities (normal) that make you think more about necromancy and occultism...Where do you situate yourself on a spiritual level ?
Stooph : Indeed, we searched for a long time for a band name that would refer to a certain part of mystery and unknown beliefs that make up some elements of our lives.
It's very exciting to think that there's something we're missing, that we're not in control of everything.
We give our lives to forces, energies and we like to imagine that we can't help it, that everything is already written. But that doesn't stop us from pulling certain existential strings...
Julien: Nornes are three Nordic deities representing the past, present and future. They weave together the thread of human destiny. Vanity talks about the meaning we try to give to our lives, our place in this world and the choices we have on the chessboard of our existence. The cover of the EP "Vanity" illustrates the fact that man tends to forget that his life will end, which is pure vanity.
In short, we could say that spiritually everything has a connection.
You're tough because you manage to remind me of My Dying Bride and Coven at the same time, but how do you do it?
Davy: My Dying Bride for sure. I've been following them since the beginning. They will have marked my whole musical career.
Rom: The Valencian air gives us this nostalgia of the greatest!
Stooph : It's not necessarily intentional, the fault lies with our numerous influences.
I also thought about Nirvana and the Melvins at times while listening to you...Is it serious doctor?
Rom : No, we love grunge singers like Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell or Eddie Vedder...
Stooph : Coming from the base of punk, grunge, I'm really happy that you can find some influences, Dave Grohl is for me unique, with a powerful play, an identity of his own, a super instinctive drummer like we can hardly find today.
Your music makes us high like a real psychedelic hippie thing and plunges us like a Black Sabbath in the middle of a depression...Does it suit you?
The most important thing is that everyone who listens to us feels that they had a good time and felt what we wanted to convey through our music and lyrics. That's what we're looking for in live too; to bring the audience along!
Stooph : More and more after the live shows, people come to see us to tell us how much we transported them during our set. That certainly works in our favour and helps to consolidate the musical block and identity of Nornes.
The scene? How is it going?
Pretty good. We've got some great dates for the beginning of 2020 with Witchfinder, The Gates of Slumber, the release of the EP and some little parties.
Stooph : We will try to push some doors (festivals and venues). We hope it will work, we want so much to express ourselves and spread our music!

Doom Metal
We're back in Doom Metal territory with Nornes, a band from Valenciennes, who offer here a particularly interesting three-track EP. First of all, the style practiced by the band, not so common. Indeed, when it comes to Doom, there are often those who propose a "traditional" Doom (Candlemass or Cathedral school) anchored in the 70's bases of the genre, and those who will browse on the extreme side (Doom/Death or Funeral Doom). Well, our friends from the chnors are going to type a bit in all these categories without ever dispersing. Their Doom is at the same time faithful to its melancholic rock'n'roll roots of depressed hippies not invited to the party and will also look for the Doom/Death side (the voices, going from clear sound to growling with ease, the guitars that know how to groove but also how to plumb the atmosphere). With Nornes, it's a bit as if we were touching the quintessence of the genre, a kind of "best of doom" but, once again, never "bean soup" and always at the service of particularly accomplished tracks.
On the artwork side, as you see above, the group went to the occult and mystical side.
The despair inherent to Doom is palpable here, through deeply melancholic atmospheres, keeping in mind that the goal is indeed to create songs. Imagine Cathedral, Pallbearer and Skepticism making a meal together (in the dark with candles of course) and deciding to merge into a single entity and you will have a (small) idea of what Nornes expresses. The best being of course to throw yourself on this first Ep which augurs a great future for this more than promising group!
Doom Metal
If you regularly follow the Scribe, you must have stumbled upon the review I made of Nornes' first EP, Vanity, released in 2018, otherwise, here it is:

I could almost use the same words for this new EP of the trio from Valenciennes. In any case in terms of enthusiasm, because the new opus is not a repeat of the first one, rather a complement. Pushing even further their melodic capacities (like on the sublime "Hurt" (which reminds me of the most melancholic odes of Bathory which would have taken a more Doom way), the guys don't forget their taste for the extreme, like with this "Near Death" with its blasted Black Metal intro, then go snooping on a mixed territory composed of Doom/Death worthy of My Dying Bride and of melodious and very rocky Doom 70's with the intention (not so far from the best Katatonia, with a touch almost Grunge at times).
Anyway, like I said about Vanity, these three north guys from up north are masters in the art of mix all forms of Doom, without ever giving the sensation of mixing brushes. Even more accomplished than their first EP, this one is a real journey in the best of this heavy and crawling Metal with, as an apotheosis, a "Burning Bridges" of almost 8 minutes that condenses all the facets of this absolutely fascinating trio. When I realize the musical "trips" that are their EPs, I come to dream of a long format, even if, I admit it, these short formats have the advantage of leaving a little bit on its hunger and therefore to want even more. So, I push the "play" button and I go back to it.
Honestly, if you like Doom, Metal in general and even Rock I strongly advise you, if you don't, to go and dive into the melancholic volutes of the shamanic smoke of Nornes' music. A marvel!
