THIS GIFT IS A CURSE - Interview English/Français - Jonas Holmberg - Le Scribe du Rock

INTERVIEW THIS GIFT IS A CURSE
Answered by TGIAC vocalist J.A. Holmberg

‘Come sleep / Come forever in your black halo
Cover me / as I tear down the heavens / I will swallow all light’

This Gift Is A Curse is one of those bands considered "modern" whose musicians come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Except that on the occasion of the release of "A Throne Of Ash", their latest opus to date, we realized that the Swedes mainly produce a Black Metal of an uncommon virulence, sometimes even terrifying. A concentrate of hatred that we discuss here with the singer Jonas Holmberg, an affable man who was kind enough to largely develop his answers, which gives us a most interesting interview!

this gift is a curse

Hello to you, and thank you for answering my questions! This Gift Is A curse has existed for more than ten years now... Can you come back to the creation of the band and introduce it to readers who wouldn't know you?

I moved to Stockholm in 2008 from my hometown of Gävle (about 200km north of Stockholm) for work/studies. I later wanted to start up some kind of musical project to pass the time. Nothing to serious, just some kind of “loud and obnoxious punk music”. In my head something like a trashy version of Cursed mixed with Converge – “Jane Doe” era. I got to know Laark (bass TGIAC) though a common enemy some time before the move and I shared my idea with him about this “noisy band”. Laark already played in a couple of bands in town and where quite busy BUT said he would be up for trying something new. Some months passed and I accidently met J-Rot (drums TGIAC) at some kind of post-rock show. He was pretty drunk and though I was the guitarist of the band that just had played on stage - so everything he said at first didn’t make much sense. But when the mistake was cleared out and we started to talk for real we found out that he moved to Stockholm the exact same month as me and that we apparently worked at the same job (!) He also told me he had played drums with a post-metal band called Seven Nautical Miles (Sound Devastation Records) in his old hometown of Piteå (far north of Sweden). So I asked him if he would be interested in playing in this band I was trying to form. I remember him saying: -“Sure … Oh damn, now I have to learn have to play fast.” Laark had at the same time gotten an e-mail from Pacman (guitars TGIAC), an old acquaintance of his, where he said he was looking for some new kind of music project where he could play “heavy riffs and dissonant chords”.

So I and Laark connected all the dots and we all met up and tried to play “some kind of loud and obnoxious punk music”. It didn’t go exactly like plans BUT I’m really happy about that fact 10 years down the road. No one in this band knew each other very well before getting together in TGIAC - but today I consider them some of my best friends, if not THE best. We got to know each other through the music/art that we were making and in my opinion is one of the finest ways to socialize.
And as a BONUS; Dave DDD (guitars TGIAC) joined in and made our 7 year old 4-piece into a fiver in 2016. Just after ‘All Hail the Swinelord’ was released. It was also an instant “click” both on a musical and personal level with him and us. Dave had for some time been looking for a “dark project” to try out more obscure musical ideas and we on the other side wanted to add some new blood to our sonic tar cauldron. The rest is as they say history. Now I can’t imagine TGIAC as a 4-piece or without Dave.

At the beginning, and especially on the first album ‘I, Guilt Bearer’, you sounded very Post-Hardcore and Sludge, with a muddy and dark aggressiveness. What were your musical and thematic influences at that time?

We all come from somewhat “diverse” musical backgrounds and therefore have different approaches when it comes to making “heavy music”. Even to this day. Although, I actually feel that our taste gets more and more in sync after each record. In the beginning we kind of bombarded each other with different music, culture and art - personal to each member. The first band that I think was tossed around as “common influences” was Breach and Converge. Later on we had Ken Mode, Cult of Luna and Neurosis. We took from that and made it a bit more trashier/broken. Remember, we were trying to be a “punk band”. Later on, just before the recording of our first EP, we stared to play some of the songs on half-tempo just for fun while rehearsing and quickly realized; “Damn, these sound way better when slowed down”. I think here is where the sludge aspects came into the band. Pretty random really.

Why I talk about the first EP is because the sound and songwriting on ‘I, Guilt Bearer’ (2012) is a direct result of the fact that we weren’t super happy about the s/t EP (2010) recording. To say the least. We thought it came out wrong production-/sound-wise and nothing like how we sounded on stage. For some reason we only chose to record our slow songs and as a result people stared to call us a “post-metal” band - which we at the time didn’t like at all (cause we were a punk band!) So we stared to write faster and angrier songs. Just before the recording of ‘I,GB’ we began nagging on our new producer MagBjörk about the sound. “This is going to be a painfully violent and loud bastard. All levels on max, at all times. It should sound like the equipment is breaking apart and that we are torturing our instruments. It’s meant to hurt anyone who might be listening. Fuck everyone.” etc etc. Also around this time the fascination for making noise grew within the band, adding lots and lots of effect pedals for the guitar and bass. People in the band where more into making angry racket/noise than just melodies and riffs. This combined with influence from crust-punk like Martyrdöd as well as some old school black metal the sound of ‘I Guilt Bearer” was molded.

Right away, ‘All Hail The Swinelord’, your second album, marks an inflection towards an ultra aggressive Black Metal/Sludge as black as coal, with a more present and elegant theme. Had your tastes changed?

Yes, our taste has changed. Or rather; it has evolved. We have constantly ventured into darker aesthetic waters, both in the music and with the lyrics since the first EP. I personally think that ‘All Hail the Swinelord’ (2015) is the perfect witness where we were at the time both as persons, musicians and as a band. More dark, more ill-willing but also more creative and progressive. Daring ourselves with new methods and bringing in guest musicians and trying on clean vocals too our music etc.

This Gift Is A Curse

‘A throne of Ash’, your third album, was released this year. Forgive my enthusiasm but I consider it a real masterpiece (even if I already liked the previous ones very much). I find the atmosphere particularly mystical and haunted, and this cover incredible!  It's a wave of sound violence that makes you look like a mush. What happened to you? Where does this hatred come from?

The real work with ‘A Throne of Ash’ started back in 2016 when Dave DDD joined the band. We had worked with developing the music in the same kind of way since the start of the band and were now looking to add something new to what we were doing. It almost felt that something was missing to get us further as a band. When Dave came along it was perfect timing, for both parties. He had this little black hard drive with riffs and ideas that was either to obscure or dark for his other musical projects. He wanted to work more on them but had no real platform to try them out. These rejected ideas fitted perfect into the TGIAC framework and we started work pretty much at the very first rehearsal with Dave and his “unwanted” riffs. Some of them later made it all the way into the album, which is pretty amazing to me now. We had no idea what was in the work at the time and how important it would be for the next step of this band. At first we wanted to make an EP of sort BUT writing songs went pretty fast and all the sudden we had a whole album. I think it is the same musical “journey” that we set out on many years ago just adding Dave’s flare as well as a more clear cutting and “hooky” riffs. He was the missing piece that made everything come together on a whole new level.

The aesthetic theme of the album is to me a natural continuation that started with ‘I, Guilt Bearer” that tells about human nature versus human culture and the timeless and fundamental clash between these two sides. I also started to sprinkle some occult ideas into the midst. ‘All Hail the Swinelord’ was a darker tunnel to enter and easy to get lost in. I was pretty depressed at the time and had to “kill” myself in able to “come back to life”. I read a lot of books on mysticism, Gnosticism, occult doctrines, books on black magick and from that I created some kind of esoteric guidance system to get me through it all, accepting my life for what it was and instead of fleeing my demons I now follow them into the unknown. ‘A Throne of Ash’ is to me the next esoteric step into the vast void I tore open with ‘All Hail the Swinelord’. It’s the same feeling of despair and true hatred – just more finely tuned and aimed. It’s about taking control, becoming everything you feared and to use that against whatever/whomever that might stand in your way. It’s a weapon and a shield. It’s the beginning and the end. It’s lost keys and forbidden portals… for anyone who is paying attention and for anyone who dares looking into the void. The artwork is supposed to portray resurrection of chaos through rituals and then controlling what you conjured to your own benefit. To become your own God and will.

This interview will be published on my blog but also in a book about the Black Metal subgenres I write. Could you give me your opinion on the following sub-currents?

Post-BM :

A: Mixing shoegaze, post-rock and black metal? Popularized by Deafheaven? Is that the right definition? To me the true source of this genre is early Lantlôs and Alcest - and they get credited way too little in my opinion. I like some more acts here like Altar of Plagues and An Autumn for Crippled Children. I often have this kind of music on in the background when I’m working etc. Many of these bands, to me at least, doesn’t “demand” that much of you as a listener. With that said; it can still be very beautiful music.

Blackened Crust

A: Martyrdöd around “In Extremis”? I kind of like this bunch. They combine two already crushing genres into one. I guess the Secret paid the way with this kind of sound as well, but maybe not form a punk standpoint but more a hardcore/metal angle. But in the end: D-beat crust-punk, black metal and chaos - what is it not to like?

Blackened Death Metal

 I love Teitanblood.

NSBM/RABM

NSBM) Strange and whiteout real sense of history? If you are a trve nazi why do you play a genre that clearly has its origins in Afro-American musical culture? Heavy metal stems from rock’n’roll, blues, rhythm’n’blues and jazz – all well documented Afro-American cultural expressions. This genre and the phenomenon’s surrounding it makes little sense to me. Also, what do you think Hitler’s cultural police would have made of long harried, scrawny young men in black and white make-up, tight leather get up, pointy oversized instruments and screaming vocalization about “Satan” and/or trolls living in the forest? In some ironic/moronic twist I feel these people are the perfect carrier of the fascist legacy, with the notion that they most certainly would have had their own “special” place in the death camps under Nazi rule.

RABM) Squat black metal? I don’t know that many bands or anything about this scene in general except for Dawn Ray’d from the UK. Saw them live once in Stockholm and it was pretty cool live.

Atmospheric Black Metal

A: I like atmospheric music in general so adding that dimension to black metal I think fits very well and can create this really interesting astral seamless vibe. It can get really haunting. Like Aklhys, Dakhma, Paysage d'Hiver, Wolves in the Throne Room or Ash Borer.

War Metal

I am not familiar with this scene.

We have the feeling from album to album that you are "blackening out", that the most brutal Black Metal is taking up more and more space in your home, how do you explain this musical evolution?

Yes, I guess this is a correct observation. I myself come from some kind of  hardcore-punk background but always liked the more darker bands in that scene like Breach, Switchblade, Cursed and His Hero Is Gone to name a few. J-Rot (TGIAC drums) is the real black metal head in our group and is always coming with a lot of good inputs regarding to that. But I think we always KIND OF creatively flirted with black metal. What I feel mainly drew us into black metal was trying to tap into the cold atmosphere it harbors. As our band journey ventured furthered into darker water it became obvious that the best tools to express ourselves could be found in black metal. But we always kept our sonic tentacles in sludge-, noise-, doom- and post-metal as well. I see TGIAC as a scale. One side is Chaos and the other side is Darkness. Right now we are tipping more and more over to Darkness rather than just being as loud and chaotic as can be. We sure know chaos inside and out by now.

What can we expect next? Have you already started thinking about it?

We are already writing on the next album and are a good way in. We all kind of felt directly after finishing recording of ‘A Throne of Ash’ that we had really “landed” as band and wanted to start working directly with new ideas. I think we are more creative and work effective now than ever. It’s really great and inspiring environment to be in at the moment. My bandmates are great people to hang and create with. We are also planning to come out and play more in 2020, hopefully we can give everyone some great news about this very soon.

What if This Gift Is A Curse was a quote?

“Chaos reigns” - Fox from ‘Antichrist’

this gift is a curse

Being on Stage... can you tell us about it?

We have always felt that our live shows and the medium of recording have been two separate “art forms” almost. But for each record I’ve noticed a shift in this and that these two entities are growing more and more into each other. Although during a live show with that vibe of pure chaos and feeling that ANYTHING/EVRYTHING came happen is hard to replicate in a studio. When a song has been recoded you can control it but during a live set things can take different turns connected to several factors. I have always felt that the live show have been our sharpest and most true weapon against the seams of reality. It is metaphysical warfare in its purest form! Dressed as a ritual it is reversed exorcism and a black mass that I use to abolish the physical room we all stand in. I want to destroy what we consider our “shared reality”. I want it to feel like we’re opening a black hole of noise, fire and blast beats that you are now getting sucked into – whatever you like it or not.

This Gift Is A Curse

INTERVIEW THIS GIFT IS A CURSE

this gift is a curse

this gift is a curse i guilt bearer

This Gift Is A Curse

This Gift Is A Curse A throne Of Ash

J'aime bien d'autres groupes comme Altar of Plagues et An Autumn for Crippled Children.

Blackened Crust

Martyrdöd autour de "In Extremis" ?

Comme Aklhys, Dakhma, Paysage d'Hiver, Wolves in the Throne Room ou Ash Borer.

Et si This Gift is A Curse était une citation ?

"Le chaos règne" - Fox de "Antichrist".

this gift is a curse

This Gift Is A Curse

This Gift Is A Curse. Alors voilà un essai :

1. Breach – ‘It’s Me God’

2. Cult of Luna – ‘the Beyond’
3. Cursed – ‘I’
4. Cursed – ‘II’
5. Cursed – ‘III’
6. Kent – ‘Isola’
7. the Knife – ‘Silent Shout’
8. Neurosis – ‘Time of Garce’
9. His Hero Is Gone – ‘Monuments to Thieves’
10. Entombed – ‘To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth’
11. Trepaneringsritualen – ‘Ritualer, Blot Och Botgöring’

17. Darkthrone – ‘Transilvanian Hunger’
18. Caspian – ‘Tertia’
19. Terra Tenebrosa – ‘the Reverses’
20. Okkultokrati – ‘No Light for Mass’
