Vous en avez déjà eu souvent l'aperçu dans les pages du Scribe...The Losts font non seulement honneur a leur région et notre beau pays de par la qualité de leur musique, mais aussi de par l'originalité d'un heavy metal sombre pas si courant dans nos latitudes, un sens de l'humour plus qu'appréciable, et, bien entendu, tout cela sous une grande modestie. Bonjour The Losts et bienvenue dans le Scribe du Rock ! Pouvez-vous vous présenter à nos lecteurs ?
Originaire des Hauts-de-France, The Losts est un quatuor composé de DGC et YGC aux guitares, PPG à la basse et JCR à la batterie. Le chant principal est tenu par YGC, alors que JCR se charge des parties extrêmes. DGC est en renfort sur des choeurs plus thrash. Et tout ceci nous permet de proposer des textures assez larges.
Voilà 10 ans que le groupe existe. Nous avons sorti un EP en 2013, un premier album en 2016. Nous voici de retour avec un nouvel album!
Vous pratiquez un genre de metal très personnel, que l'on peut nommer dark heavy metal faute de mieux et vous citez comme influences des monstres sacrés comme Bathory (mes idoles), Iced Earth, Therion, Mercyful Fate, Witchery ou Megadeth. Cela me paraît bien correspondre mais vous avez surtout votre propre son ! Comment en êtes-vous arrivés à pratiquer ce genre de heavy bien sombre, aux ambiances occultes ?

La citation d'influences est toujours un exercice difficile auquel nous sommes contraints bien évidemment. Notre son est tout simplement le résultat des influences principales des membres du groupe : le Heavy, l’aspect théâtral du Metal pour notre guitariste-chanteur, les Guitar Heroes et le Metal plus moderne pour notre soliste, le Classic Rock/Hard Rock pour notre bassiste et le côté sombre/Black Metal pour le batteur. Il n'y a pas grand chose de calculé, sur une base Heavy chacun apporte ses envies et les choses se mettent en place. C'est comme ça que naissent des morceaux complètements différents comme « The Drug I Miss » et « Until The End » par exemple.
Votre album Mystery Of Depths est votre deuxième, et, d'emblée, on est frappé par la magnifique couverture de Chadwick St John, l'homme déjà responsable de la belle cover du Old Star de Darkthrone. Comment êtes-vous entrés en contact avec lui et comment cette pochette a-t-elle vu le jour ?
C'est vrai qu'elle claque cette pochette, nous en sommes très fiers. Elle mériterait une édition Vinyle ! Nous n’avions pas forcément anticipé de travailler avec Chadwick au lancement du projet. Il y a tellement de bons artistes et avec la souplesse qu'offrent les échanges par internet nous ne nous sommes fixés aucune limite.
Le choix s'est fait de manière démocratique : nous avons tous proposé des types d'artworks que nous aimions. Parmi eux on pouvait retrouver Jeff Grimal, Costeanu, Dead Inside,… Finalement, c'est Chadwick qui a retenu le plus de suffrages car l’approche du dessin en noir et blanc collait bien à l’ambiance que l’on voulait donner au disque. Nous l'avons contacté, expliqué le concept et envoyé quelques démo. Il a tout de suite accroché. Nous n'avions qu'une seule remarque à l’ébauche du dessin qu’il nous avait envoyée: rendre le personnage principal plus inquiétant, plus mystérieux. La seconde version était la bonne !
L'album est pour moi une vraie pépite ! J'y vois un pont entre heavy metal et des choses plus extrêmes, plus obscures. Que pensez-vous du boulot d'un groupe comme Tribulation, et sinon quels groupes actuels trouvent grâce à vos yeux ?
Cet album est effectivement une grande fierté !
Tribulation n'est pas forcément une influence pour nous, bien qu’il trace de manière louable une route bien à lui.
C'est très rare que l'on se dise : « Tiens, ça serait bien que ce morceau sonne comme untel ». On aime tous les grands classiques du Heavy/hard Rock évidemment. Étant tous les 4 nés dans les années 70/80 nos parents nous ont élevés aux Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Ensuite, comme évoqué précédemment, chacun a ses préférences : YGC est un grand fan d’Andre Matos ou Snowy Shaw par exemple, DGC de Slash ou EVH , JCR adore Jan Axel Von Blomberg (The Kovenant, Arcturus, …) et PPG, les sonorités néoclassiques d’Uli Jon Roth et les monstres comme Led Zep et Deep Purple.
Concernant les groupes actuels, disons que ça peut aller d’Octavision, en passant par Ghost, Primal Fear, Ice Ages, Insomnium, Vulture Industries, Drudkh ou Devin Townsend!
Si The Losts devait être une citation ou un proverbe ?

Plus sérieusement, on fait ce qu'on a envie, ce qu'on aime. On aime bien sortir des sentiers battus et des évidences. Si les gens accrochent tant mieux, sinon c'est pas grave. Il y a tellement d'autres choses à écouter.
Vous avez déjà pas mal tourné par le passé et on vous imagine trépignant d'impatience de retourner sur les planches. Des choses prévues de ce côté là maintenant que l'horizon semble s'éclaircir ?
Pour le moment, rien de véritablement prévu malheureusement. Il y a encore pas mal d’incertitudes du côté des salles. Évidemment on aurait aimé faire une release party digne de ce nom. On a dû se contenter d'une écoute interactive de l’album en streaming live.
Nous n'avons pas encore pu nous réunir pour répéter et il va falloir dégripper la machine. Lorsque la date du prochain concert sera fixée, ça nous donnera un bon coup de boost.
En écoutant votre album j'ai failli me déboîter les cervicales mais c'était volontiers ! J'ai le sentiment que le vrai Heavy opère un vrai comeback, sans être uniquement vintage, qu'en pensez-vous ?
Je (JCR) connais personnellement un bon ostéo ! Tu te ferais décoincer les cervicales avec du Rotting Christ, du Solstafir ou du Dream Theater en fond sonore.
Le Heavy n'est jamais mort à notre avis. Les dinosaures Maiden et Judas sont encore là. Il y a plein de jeunes groupes qui revendiquent clairement leurs influences et c'est tant mieux ! Le plus dur c'est d'assumer pleinement ces influences et en même temps de proposer quelque chose de frais.
Pouvez-vous nous parler des morceaux de l'album et notamment de leurs thématiques ? Votre titre préféré sur ce disque ?
The Losts reste animé par un concept satirique, celui des Egarés, êtres pervertis au contact de l’être humain. Ce prétexte imagé permet de détailler les grands maux de notre société qui prennent racine dans la complexité de notre espèce, de nos rapports. “Mystery Of Depths” poursuit cette mythologie mais s’ouvre également à de nouveaux sujets, comme “The Sand War (May 1940)” qui part d’un témoignage familial de l’opération Dynamo, à Dunkerque, durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Pour le titre préféré... peut-être un morceau où chacun a son moment de présence particulier? comme “Mystery Of Depths”, “The Priests Control” par exemple, ou encore “Inner Wounds” qui renferme même un beau solo de basse de PPG.
Des anecdotes concernant la compo, l'enregistrement de l'album ?
Un album, c’est un peu comme un livre ouvert sur l’histoire d’un groupe, alors des anecdotes on en a à la pelle. Prends, par exemple, le chapitre “Revelation Of The Losts”. Sur le précédent disque, nous avions ajouté, en bonus, une version d’un de nos titres interprétés par les chanteurs de 3 groupes amis. C’est dans cet esprit que l’on a voulu laisser la place à nos proches, fans et groupes avec qui on partage souvent la scène, sur “Revelation Of The Losts”. Au final, il y a une trentaine de personnes en guest sur cette chanson.
Une anecdote forte relative à ce disque est tout de même le fait qu’il s’est terminé en plein changement de line-up. Lors de notre soirée d’écoute du mix finalisé, ce n’était pas évident pour PPG, notre nouveau bassiste, mais également pour le reste du groupe de s’imaginer porter ce disque alors même que l’équipe avait changé. PPG a donc réenregistré toutes les parties de basse en 2 demi-journées, avec Phil Reinhalter - le producteur de Mystery Of Depths. Ce disque est donc marqué par l’identité du nouveau groupe.
Une petite liste de vos albums préférés de tous les temps ?
Pas facile car apprécier un album dépend avant tout de l'état d'esprit dans lequel on se trouve à l'instant T. Il y a des moments où on a envie de se refaire la discographie de Kiss et la semaine d'après celle de Windir.
Les albums « cultes » sortis il y a des années sont évidemment ancrés dans la mémoire, non pas qu'ils étaient bien supérieurs à des sorties actuelles mais plutôt parce que c'était des événements plus isolés. Aujourd'hui il est bien difficile de voir émerger des groupes qui deviendront les nouveaux Megadeth, Helloween ou Children of Bodom. Il y a tellement de bonnes formations ; locales comme internationales d'ailleurs.
Cependant, on trouverait sans doute dans la malle à trésors de The Losts, et parmi tant d’autres choses : Nightwing (Marduk), Appetite for Destruction (Guns’n’Roses), Holy Land (Angra), Surfing with the alien (Joe Satriani), Cruelty And The Beast (Cradle Of Filth), Blizzard of Ozz (Ozzy Osbourne), Countdown To Extinction (Megadeth), Los Exorcistos (White Zombie), Play (Alain Caron)...

Évidemment un grand merci au Scribe et à ses lecteurs. Nous sommes bien conscients qu'il est difficile de faire « vivre » une telle structure de nos jours et que cela relève plutôt de la passion qu'autre chose. Hello The Losts and welcome to Le Scribe Du Rock ! Can you introduce yourselves to our readers ?
Hailing from Hauts-de-France, The Losts are a quartet composed of DGC and YGC on guitars, PPG on bass and JCR on drums. The main vocals are held by YGC, while JCR takes care of the extreme parts. DGC is in reinforcement on more thrashy choruses. And all of this allows us to offer a wide range of textures.
It's been 10 years since the band exists. We released an EP in 2013, a first album in 2016. Now we're back with a new album!
You practice a very personal kind of metal, that we can call dark heavy metal for lack of a better term and you quote as influences holy monsters like Bathory (my idols), Iced Earth, Therion, Mercyful Fate, Witchery or Megadeth. That seems to me to be a good match but you have your own sound! How did you come to play this kind of dark heavy music, with occult atmospheres ?

Citing influences is always a difficult exercise and we are forced to do so of course. Our sound is simply the result of the main influences of the band members: Heavy, theatrical metal for our guitarist-vocalist, Guitar Heroes and more modern metal for our soloist, Classic Rock/Hard Rock for our bassist and the Dark/Black Metal side for the drummer. There is not much calculated, on a Heavy base each one brings his desires and the things fall into place. That's how completely different songs like "The Drug I Miss" and "Until The End" are born for example.
Your Mystery Of Depths album is your second, and right away, we are struck by the beautiful cover by Chadwick St John, the man already responsible for the beautiful cover of Darkthrone's Old Star. How did you get in touch with him and how did this cover come about?
It's true that this cover is amazing, we are very proud of it. It deserves a vinyl edition! We didn't necessarily anticipate working with Chadwick when we started the project. There are so many good artists out there and with the flexibility of internet exchanges we set no limits.
The choice was made in a democratic way: we all proposed types of artworks that we liked. Among them we could find Jeff Grimal, Costeanu, Dead Inside,... Finally, it's Chadwick who retained the most votes because the approach of the black and white drawing stuck well to the atmosphere we wanted to give to the record. We contacted him, explained the concept and sent him some demos. He was immediately hooked. We had only one remark to the draft of the drawing he sent us: make the main character more worrying, more mysterious. The second version was the right one!
The album is for me a real nugget! I see it as a bridge between heavy metal and more extreme, darker things. What do you think of the work of a band like Tribulation, and if not, which bands do you like today?
This album is indeed a great pride!
Tribulation isn't necessarily an influence for us, although they are commendably charting their own course.
It's very rare that we say to ourselves: "Hey, it would be nice if this song sounded like so-and-so". We all like the great classics of Heavy/Hard Rock of course. Being all 4 born in the 70/80's our parents raised us with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Then, as mentioned before, everyone has his preferences: YGC is a big fan of Andre Matos or Snowy Shaw for example, DGC of Slash or EVH, JCR loves Axel Von Blomberg (The Kovenant, Arcturus, ...) and PPG, the neoclassical sounds of Uli Jon Roth and monsters like Led Zep and Deep Purple.

More seriously, we do what we want, what we like. We like to get off the beaten track and the obvious. If people like it, great, if not, it's not a big deal. There are so many other things to listen to.
You have already toured quite a bit in the past and we can imagine you are eager to get back on the stage. Are there any plans for this now that the horizon seems to be clearing?
For the moment, nothing really planned unfortunately. There are still a lot of uncertainties about the venues. Obviously we would have liked to do a release party worthy of the name. We had to settle for an interactive listening of the album in live streaming.
We haven't been able to get together to rehearse yet and we'll have to unjam the machine. When the next show date is set, it will give us a good boost.
Listening to your album I almost dislocated my neck but I was happy to do it! I have the feeling that real heavy music is making a real comeback, without being only vintage, what do you think about it ?
I (JCR) personally know a good osteo! You'd get your neck unstuck with Rotting Christ, Solstafir or Dream Theater in the background.
Heavy metal is never dead in our opinion. The dinosaurs Maiden and Judas are still around. There are a lot of young bands who clearly claim their influences and that's good! The hardest thing is to fully assume these influences and at the same time to offer something fresh.
Can you tell us about the tracks of the album and especially about their themes? What is your favorite track on this record?
The Losts is still driven by a satirical concept, that of the Lost Ones, beings perverted by contact with human beings. This pictorial pretext allows to detail the great evils of our society which are rooted in the complexity of our species, of our relationships. "Mystery Of Depths" continues this mythology but also opens to new subjects, like "The Sand War (May 1940)" which starts from a family testimony of the Dynamo operation, in Dunkirk, during the Second World War.
For the favorite track... maybe a song where everyone has their own special moment of presence... like "Mystery Of Depths", "The Priests Control" for example, or "Inner Wounds" which even contains a nice bass solo from PPG.
Any anecdotes about the composition and the recording of the album ?
An album is a bit like an open book on the history of a band, so anecdotes are a dime a dozen. Take, for example, the chapter "Revelation Of The Losts". On the previous record, we added, as a bonus, a version of one of our songs performed by the singers of 3 friendly bands. It is in this spirit that we wanted to leave the place to our close relations, fans and bands with whom we often share the scene, on "Revelation Of The Losts". In the end, there are about thirty people in guest on this song.
A strong anecdote related to this record is the fact that it ended in the middle of a line-up change. At the time of our evening of listening to the final mix, it was not obvious for PPG, our new bass player, but also for the rest of the group to imagine carrying this record while the team had changed. So PPG re-recorded all the bass parts in 2 half days, with Phil Reinhalter - the producer of Mystery Of Depths. So this record is marked by the identity of the new band.
A short list of your favorite albums of all time?
It's not easy because appreciating an album depends above all on the state of mind in which you are at the moment. There are moments when you want to listen to Kiss' discography and the week after to Windir's one.
The "cult" albums released years ago are obviously anchored in the memory, not because they were far superior to current releases but rather because they were more isolated events. Nowadays it's hard to see bands emerging that will become the new Megadeth, Helloween or Children of Bodom. There are so many good bands out there; both local and international.
However, one would probably find in the treasure chest of The Losts, and among many other things: Nightwing (Marduk), Appetite for Destruction (Guns'n'Roses), Holy Land (Angra), Surfing with the alien (Joe Satriani), Cruelty And The Beast (Cradle Of Filth), Blizzard of Ozz (Ozzy Osbourne), Countdown To Extinction (Megadeth), Los Exorcistos (White Zombie), Play (Alain Caron). ..
