Ce qui impressionne chez les lyonnais de Warside c'est d'abord cette capacité à faire parler la poudre ! Leur death metal agrémenté de grind et de passages slam épais comme un brouillard sans fin sur la Tamise vous fait l'effet d'un coup de boule dont on ne se réveille pas. Ce serait pourtant dommage de s'arrêter uniquement a la capacité du groupe a tout défoncer : derrière ce déferlement de violence se cache d'excellents musiciens (des riffs qui tuent !) et l'atmosphère de haine dégagée par leur album The Enemy Inside est tout bonnement stupéfiante ! Allez, on en cause avec Thomas (chant) et Jérôme (guitare)...

Salut, et tout d’abord merci à toi de nous accorder cette interview!
Nous sommes Warside, un groupe de Death Metal autour duquel s’articulent diverses influences allant du thrash au grindcore. Notre musique se veut brutale avec des passages qui donnent envie de s’arracher les cervicales.
Vous êtes une formation récente (2018) mais certains de vos membres ont déjà joué dans des formations auparavant (Hemerah) et jouent toujours dans d'autres (Skox, Be Witness,AxDxT). Comment vous êtes vous retrouvés au sein de Warside ? Quels objectifs/envies vous ont réunis ?

De 2003 à 2008 avec Vince et Thomas on a joué dans plusieurs groupes de Death ensemble avant de partir chacun de notre côté explorer de nouveaux horizons. Mais on a toujours gardé le contact et suivi les projets de chacun. Chaque soirée ou moment passé ensemble, ils me disaient la même chose « c’est quand tu veux jé » ! Fin 2017 je me suis remis sérieusement à la guitare et j'ai commencé l’enregistrement de quelques Riffs. Je suis allé voir Thom et Vince et ils m’ont dit Ok c’est parti !
On a travaillé ensemble sur une maquette complète et on a eu la chance d’être rejoint par Nathan (batterie) en juin 2018. Pour l’anecdote, ce jour-là, Thom passe à la maison pour écouter les nouveaux riffs et au même moment je reçois un mail de Nathan, on écoute les différents sons auxquels il a participé…On était comme des gosses de 4 ans un matin de noël ! Et puis en 2019 on nous propose notre premier concert et là on se rend compte qu’il nous faut un bassiste…On a demandé à Flo qui joue avec Vince depuis plus de 10 ans dans Skox s’il pouvait nous dépanner. Suite à ce concert on lui a demandé de rester avec nous !
Aujourd’hui on a le line-up solide qu’on souhaite depuis toujours, tant sur le plan humain que musical. C’est compliqué de dire ça en ce moment…Mais notre objectif principal est de monter sur scène et de voyager, c’est notre thérapie ! On veut aussi progresser, repousser nos limites et arriver à produire une musique qui représente au mieux notre état d’esprit.
Vous démontrez avec ce groupe que le côté guerrier, belliqueux est inhérent à l'être humain...vous devez vous sentir servis vu l'ambiance qui règne à notre époque, non ?

Effectivement, et toute violence est visible dans l’artwork de notre album, cette entité cauchemardesque et quasi prophétique se nourrissant de la haine et des horreurs humaines, ne laissant que miasmes et désolation. Chacun de nous contribue à alimenter cet immondice, via The enemy inside. On remercie l’artiste Jesus Lhysta au passage pour son formidable travail !

Pour moi cette période ne change pas mon ressenti sur la médiocrité de l’être humain, elle ne fait que mettre en avant certains comportements qui nous rendent fous intérieurement ! Je ne suis personne pour dire ce qu’il est bien ou mal de faire, ce qu’il faut penser pour changer les choses !
Warside me permet simplement d’exprimer mon ressenti sur une partie du monde qui nous entoure. The enemy inside a été écrit avant cette période…je te laisse imaginer la suite…
Warside c'est de la colère mise en musique, et c'est un paysage guerrier qui se peint sous nos yeux horrifiés...D'où vous est venu ce concept guerrier ? Vous étiez fans de Bolt Thrower ?

Haha pas spécialement, mais quel fan de Warhammer n’a pas fait de longues parties sur l’album War Master dans les années 90, on reste dans le thème!
Guerrier, vindicatif, appel à la révolte...c’est simplement le premier message que nous avons voulu faire passer, fort de nos parcours de vie et musicaux, il était temps de laisser s'exprimer notre violence intérieure via un metal extrême et sans compromis.

Pour ma part j’adore Bolt Thrower et j’adore l’histoire, « Plus vous regardez loin dans le passé plus vous verrez loin dans le futur » W.Churchill. Ce côté guerrier représente surtout le combat avec notre « animal interne » qui à tout moment peut exploser et nous faire déraper. Il représente également parfaitement le lien fort que l’on a entre nous.
Tiens, justement, pourriez vous nous dire un mot de vos influences ?

Il y a deux choses qui m'influencent pour Warside. Le monde qui nous entoure et la musique. J’aime la musique en général et je peux écouter énormément de styles différents, mais il est vrai que selon mon humeur j’écoute énormément de metal …Et ce que j’aime dans le metal c’est la brutalité et la sauvagerie qui en découle. Dying fetus, Aborted, Rotten Sound et Tenebrum Infectus sont mes incontournables !
Cet EP (NdS : The Enemy Inside) propose un death brutal et violent, lorgnant vers le grind. Allez-vous garder cette même mixture pour l'album que vous nous délivrerez ?

Oh que oui !!! On travaille déjà dessus et de manière différente avec une plus grande implication de tout le monde ! On va repousser nos limites ! On a encore beaucoup de choses à exprimer !
The enemy Inside est un condensé de haine métallique que l'on se prend en pleine gueule ! Décidément le death metal se porte de mieux en mieux ces derniers temps ! A quoi cela est-il dû selon vous ?

Le métal en général est en pleine expansion, on voit les différents courants qui s’animent allant du brutal death à la résurgence du neo-metal...chacun choisit ses armes et fait passer son message! Les réseaux sociaux et la diffusion massive de clips et promo via internet contribuent également à fédérer les adeptes à travers le monde.
L'époque que nous traversons doit être un réservoir sans fin d'inspiration pour vous ! Que pensez-vous de cette période et pensez-vous que nous allons nous en sortir ? Et si oui comment ?

Nous sommes peu optimistes pour l’avenir à vrai dire. On voit bien que les tensions sociales sont aujourd’hui à leur comble, les inégalités et la Violence silencieuse du monde du travail contribuent à isoler chacun. L’album de Warside est aussi un appel à l'éveil des consciences : Les faits de violence et de ressentiment de nos titres sont évidemment fictionnels et cathartiques, à l’image des thèmes forts du metal extrême, mais ce message veut surtout poser un constat réaliste et inciter à la réflexion, comprendre et apprivoiser notre société avant d'être engloutis dans sa spirale de violence et d'extrémisme

Je suis d’accord avec Thomas sur le côté « peu optimistes » ! On va en sortir mais comment ? Je ne sais pas ! J’ai deux ados et ma femme aussi…je peux te dire que ça m’inquiète énormément ! Pour ce qui est de la musique, ça ne change rien à la rage que l’on met dans nos morceaux, je crois que c’est devenu naturel, Covid ou pas.

Tout à fait! Les textes sont d’ailleurs inspirés de films narrant une “guerre” au sens large ( Platoon, Rampage, Chute Libre…) ou d’œuvres littéraires et vidéoludiques (Fahrenheit 451,The road, The last of us..)
Les films de guerre que nous aimons sont nombreux mais on peut citer Apocalypse now, The thin red line, le chef d'œuvre Full metal Jacket…
Parlez-nous un peu de la scène lyonnaise actuelle ! Des groupes à nous recommander ?

Je citerais By Jupiter qui arrache sur scène avec une puissance de feu rare en Live ! Dead Kiwis !!! un groupe complètement barré qui mérite selon moi beaucoup plus d’attention !!! DeadFuck qui évolue dans un Grindcore sans concession, ils nous ont invités à jouer avec eux à Lyon et quelle claque !!! D’ailleurs ils ont sorti leur premier album, si tu aimes le blast sans concession, soutiens-les ! On a besoin de groupes comme ça à Lyon !

La scène grind est bien vivante avec Warfuck et AxDxT, sans oublier la scène black metal, assez discrète mais riche, qui accueille Neige Morte et Malepeste.

What impresses about Warside from Lyon is first of all this ability to make the powder speak! Their death metal decorated with grind and slam passages as thick as an endless fog on the Thames gives you the effect of a blow of ball which you don't wake up from. It would be a pity to stop only at the band's ability to smash everything : behind this violent outburst are excellent musicians (killer riffs !) and the atmosphere of hatred released by their album The Enemy Inside is simply amazing ! Hi Warside ! Thank you for answering my questions...Can you introduce yourself to the readers?
Hi, and first of all thank you for giving us this interview!
We are Warside, a Death Metal band with various influences from thrash to grindcore. Our music is brutal with passages that make you want to tear your head off.
You are a recent band (2018) but some of your members have already played in bands before (Hemerah) and still play in others (Skox, Be Witness,AxDxT). How did you get into Warside? What objectives/envies brought you together?
(Jérôme) :
From 2003 to 2008 with Vince and Thomas we played in several Death bands together before leaving each of us to explore new horizons. But we always kept in touch and followed each other's projects. Each evening or moment spent together, they told me the same thing "it's when you want to jé"! At the end of 2017 I got back seriously into guitar and started recording some Riffs. I went to see Thom and Vince and they told me Ok let's go!
We worked together on a complete demo and we were lucky enough to be joined by Nathan (drums) in June 2018. For the anecdote, that day, Thom came by the house to listen to the new riffs and at the same time I received an email from Nathan, we listened to the different sounds he participated in...We were like 4 year old kids on Christmas morning! And then in 2019 we are offered our first concert and we realise that we need a bass player...We asked Flo who has been playing with Vince for more than 10 years in Skox if he could help us out. Following this concert we asked him to stay with us!
Today we have the solid line-up we've always wanted, both humanly and musically. It's complicated to say that at the moment...But our main goal is to get on stage and travel, that's our therapy! We also want to progress, push our limits and manage to produce music that best represents our state of mind.
You show with this band that the warlike, bellicose side is inherent to the human being...you must feel served given the atmosphere that reigns in our time, right?

Indeed, and all violence is visible in the artwork of our album, this nightmarish and almost prophetic entity feeding on hatred and human horrors, leaving only miasmas and desolation. Each one of us contributes to feeding this filth, via The enemy inside. We thank the artist Jesus Lhysta in passing for his wonderful work!

For me this period does not change my feelings about the mediocrity of human beings, it only highlights certain behaviours that drive us crazy inside! I am nobody to say what is right or wrong to do, what we need to think to change things!
Warside simply allows me to express my feelings about a part of the world around us. The enemy inside was written before this period... I let you imagine the rest...
Warside is anger set to music, and it's a warlike landscape that is painted before our horrified eyes... Where did this warlike concept come from? Were you fans of Bolt Thrower?

Haha not especially, but what fan of Warhammer didn't do long parts on the War Master album in the 90's, we stay in the theme!
Warrior, vindictive, call to revolt...it's simply the first message we wanted to convey, strong of our life and musical backgrounds, it was time to let our inner violence express itself through extreme and uncompromising metal.

For my part I love Bolt Thrower and I love history, "The further you look into the past the further you will see into the future" W. Churchill. This warrior side represents above all the fight with our "inner animal" which at any moment can explode and cause us to slip. It also perfectly represents the strong bond we have with each other.
Well, could you tell us a word about your influences?

There are two things that influence me about Warside. The world around us and the music. I like music in general and I can listen to a lot of different styles, but it's true that depending on my mood I listen to a lot of metal...And what I like about metal is the brutality and savagery that comes with it. Dying fetus, Aborted, Rotten Sound and Tenebrum Infectus are my must-haves !
This EP proposes a brutal and violent death, looking towards the grind. Are you going to keep this same mix for the album you'll deliver us?

Oh yes!!!! We are already working on it and in a different way with a greater involvement of everyone! We're going to push our limits! We still have a lot of things to express!
The enemy Inside is a condensed metallic hate that we're taking in each other's faces! Decidedly death metal is getting better and better these days! Why do you think this is due to?

Metal in general is in full expansion, we can see the different currents which are animated going from the brutal death to the resurgence of neo-metal...everyone chooses his weapons and makes his message get across! Social networks and the massive diffusion of clips and promotions via internet also contribute to federate the followers around the world.
The times we are going through must be an endless reservoir of inspiration for you! What do you think of this period and do you think we will get through it? And if so how?

We are not very optimistic about the future, to tell the truth. It is clear that social tensions are at their height today, with inequalities and the silent violence of the world of work contributing to the isolation of everyone. Warside's album is also a call to awaken consciences : The facts of violence and resentment of our songs are obviously fictional and cathartic, like the strong themes of extreme metal, but this message wants above all to make a realistic statement and to incite reflection, to understand and tame our society before being engulfed in its spiral of violence and extremism.

I agree with Thomas on the "not very optimistic" side! We're going to get out of it, but how? I don't know! I have two teenagers and my wife too...I can tell you that it worries me a lot! As far as the music is concerned, it doesn't change anything to the rage we put in our songs, I think it's become natural, Covid or not.

You have to appreciate some war movies, don't you? If so, which ones?

Absolutely! The texts are inspired by films narrating a "war" in the broadest sense of the word (Platoon, Rampage, Chute Libre...) or by literary and video works (Fahrenheit 451, The road, The last of us...).
The war films we like are numerous but we can quote Apocalypse now, The thin red line, the masterpiece Full metal Jacket...
Tell us a little about the current Lyon scene! Any bands to recommend us?

I would quote By Jupiter, who tears off the stage with a rare firepower in Live! Dead Kiwis !!! a band that deserves a lot more attention !!! DeadFuck who evolves in an uncompromising Grindcore, they invited us to play with them in Lyon and what a slap in the face !!! By the way they released their first album, if you like blast without concession, support them ! We need bands like that in Lyon !
