Bonjour Seeds Of Mary ! Je ne vais pas commencer par une question, mais d'abord par des remerciements, car votre album me fait vibrer !! Bravo !
Merci beaucoup ! Ça fait toujours extrêmement chaud au cœur de recevoir de tels compliments à la sortie d'un album, surtout après y avoir mis autant de nous pendant presque 2 ans.
Du coup, première question ! Comment, quand on vient de Bordeaux, arrive t'on a rivaliser avec les meilleurs groupes de rock alternatif US....je pense a Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Les Melvins, Nirvana ?
Aaron : (rires) On ne rivalise tout simplement pas, tu nous parles d'une autre planète en citant de tels groupes. Néanmoins nous faisons tout pour donner le meilleur de nous même à chaque album, tant au niveau de la production que de la composition. Forcément, se retrouver cités aux côtés de ces noms, c'est un énorme honneur!
Raph : Exactement et je pense que le principal est juste de continuer à faire les choses correctement, à ne jamais se reposer sur ses lauriers, à constamment travailler pour donner plus et toujours se remettre en question en tant que groupes et individualités. Mais merci à toi pour le compliment, on le prend avec grand plaisir ! (rires)
Vous ne débutez pas vraiment, puisque vous sévissez sous ce nom depuis 2011, et vous vous étiez bâtis sur les cendres du groupe D.I.R.T...avec le recul, comment voyez vous ces dix dernières années ?
Raph : Aaron et moi ne sommes pas des membres fondateurs, nous avons rejoint le groupe pour la tournée qui a suivi la sortie de Choose Your Lie, le premier album du groupe fin 2015. C'est forcément compliqué pour nous de te parler des 5 premières années de Seeds, mais disons que c'est réellement depuis la sortie de cet album que le groupe a commencé à tourner régulièrement, à toujours essayer de repousser un peu plus les limites au niveau des compositions et de la communication. Nos performances scéniques sont également devenues plus stables et solides.
Si je regarde en arrière, je ne vois que d'excellents souvenirs, tu n'imagines pas à quel point on peut se marrer tous les 6 dans notre camion !
Aaron: C'est clair, aujourd'hui on est tournés vers l'avenir, on regarde tous dans la même direction. On a hâte de retourner se marrer dans le camion d'ailleurs !
Je le disais dans la fausse question numéro 1, Serendipity,votre nouvel album, m'a retourné comme une crêpe...Pouvez vous nous parler de sa réalisation ?
Raph : Pour être tout à fait franc, la formule a été exactement la même que pour les albums précédents : Julien compose de son côté et nous envoie une première trame instrumentale de ce qui va devenir l'album. Cette fois, j'ai moi-même composé et proposé deux morceaux. On choisit à 6 les morceaux qui nous touchent le plus et le travail commence. Aaron écrit ses parties batteries, Jérem ses textes et ses lignes de chant.. De mon côté je travaille beaucoup en binôme avec Julien pour les parties guitares, pour qu'elles soient le plus complémentaires possible. On se retrouve en préprod Jérem, Julien et moi pour enregistrer les voix, faire les derniers ajustements et nous partons en studio avec David, notre sixième homme.
Aaron : Pour cet album on a enregistré les batteries dans les locaux de "Larsen" à Bègles, là où on répète toute l'année. Nous sommes restés 3 jours entre Noël et le jour de l'an. Surtout 3 nuits d'ailleurs car je faisais mes prises entre 18h et minuit ! Les autres membres restaient avec David pour écouter les prises. On était tous très concentrés et concernés, je garde un super souvenir de cette session studio.
Raph : Nous avons fini les derniers enregistrements de voix quelques jours seulement avant le confinement, donc nous avons vraiment profité de ce temps pour travailler sur le mix et le mastering. On a jamais autant communiqué que pendant cette période et avec du recul je pense que l'album est vraiment à la hauteur de nos espérances.
Y'a t'il eu aussi de la sérendipité pour arriver a ce résultat ?
Raph : Dans le processus de création d'un album, la sérendipité est inévitable! Qui peut prévoir à quoi ressemblera le résultat final avant de l'avoir sous les yeux ? Il me semble compliqué de dissocier art et sérendipité. Pour tout te dire, il y a eu pas mal de modifications de dernière minute sur cet album. La pochette actuelle n'était pas celle prévue initialement, un morceau comme The Atheist est quasiment méconnaissable par rapport à sa première version.. Quand tu connais l'envers du décor, cet album porte vraiment bien son nom.
Vous êtes un groupe taillé pour la scène, vous avez déjà beaucoup tourné...comment vivez vous cette période de « pause » obligée ? Favorise t'elle la composition de nouveaux titres ?
Aaron : Cette période est clairement très frustrante. Sortir un album sans pouvoir le tourner derrière c'est le pire des scénari. Heureusement toute mauvaise chose a une fin, nous tournerons "Serendipity" aussi longtemps que nécessaire une fois que tout sera revenu à la normale. Probablement avec encore plus de fougue et d'envie ! Quant à la composition de nouveaux titres la période aura forcément une influence car nos morceaux sont toujours le reflet de ce qu'on peut vivre ou ressentir au quotidien.
Raph : En attendant de pouvoir présenter cet album en live, on va faire tout notre possible pour le faire vivre sur les réseaux sociaux, même si on est bien conscients qu'à notre niveau, Internet a ses limites. Nous sommes bien évidemment impatients de pouvoir repartir à l'assaut des routes pour le faire découvrir, et pouvoir partager avec un maximum de personnes aux quatre coins du pays, et en dehors, espérons-le!
Pouvez vous nous parler des groupes qui vous ont le plus marqué ? Ceux qui ont emmené Seeds OF Mary sur les fonds baptismaux ?
Raph : Il y en a tellement.. Il faudrait que chaque membre du groupe soit là pour en parler, mais concrètement, je pense que des groupes comme The Beatles, David Bowie, Nirvana, Manson font partie de l'ADN du groupe.
D'un point de vue tout à fait personnel, je suis obligé de te citer Pink Floyd, qui est pour moi le groupe qui a le plus changé ma vie.. Faith No More est également assez intouchable d'après moi.. Aujourd'hui, on a la sensation d'avoir réussi à diluer toutes ces influences communes et individuelles pour trouver notre griffe.
Aaron: Pas grand chose à ajouter à ça ! Tous ces groupes nous ont construit. Quand j'écris mes parties batteries, ou que je modifie ce que m'a envoyé Julien, j'ai toujours un plan en tête de Ginger Fish, Dave Grohl ou même Ray Luzier (gros coup de cœur pour ce batteur).
Avec les années, toutes ces influences se mélangent et tu finis par t'approprier tout ça.
Tiens d'ailleurs, pourquoi « Seeds Of Mary » ?
Raph : C'est Xavier, le premier bassiste du groupe qui avait amené ce nom de groupe. Il n'y a pas de signification particulière, c'était surtout esthétique, il y a une certaine ambivalence et je trouve que ça marche effectivement très bien, même si la plupart du temps la question est plutôt de savoir pourquoi on ne s'appelle pas « Mary's Seeds ». (rires)
Aaron : Et parce que « Mary Of Seeds » ne veut rien dire.

Hello SOM! I'm not going to start with a question, but first of all with thanks, because your album makes me vibrate ! Bravo !
Thanks a lot ! It's always extremely heart-warming to receive such compliments at the release of an album, especially after having put so many of us into it for almost 2 years.
Of course, first question ! How, when we come from Bordeaux, can we compete with the best alternative rock bands US.... I think of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Melvins, Nirvana ?
Aaron: (laughs) We just don't compete, you're talking about another planet and you're quoting such bands. Nevertheless we do our best to give the best of ourselves to each album, both in terms of production and composition. Of course, to be quoted alongside these names is a huge honor!
Raph : Exactly and I think the main thing is just to keep doing things right, to never rest on our laurels, to constantly work to give more and always question ourselves as bands and individuals. But thanks to you for the compliment, we take it with great pleasure! (laughter)
You're not really starting out, since you've been operating under that name since 2011, and you've been building on the ashes of the D.I.R.T. group...looking back, how do you see the last ten years?
Raph : Aaron and I are not founding members, we joined the band for the tour that followed the release of Choose Your Lie, the band's first album at the end of 2015. It's necessarily complicated for us to tell you about the first 5 years of Seeds, but let's say that it's really since the release of this album that the band started touring regularly, always trying to push the limits a little bit more in terms of compositions and communication. Our stage performances have also become more stable and solid.
If I look back, I only see great memories, you can't imagine how much fun we can have all 6 of us in our truck!
Aaron: It's clear, today we're looking to the future, we're all looking in the same direction. We can't wait to go back to having fun in the truck, by the way!
I was saying it in false question number 1, Serendipity, your new album, turned me over like a pancake...Can you tell us about its realization ?
Raph : To be quite frank, the formula was exactly the same as for the previous albums : Julien composes on his side and sends us a first instrumental framework of what will become the album. This time, I composed and proposed two songs myself. Six of us choose the songs that touch us the most and the work begins. Aaron writes his drum parts, Jérem his lyrics and his vocal lines... On my side I work a lot in binomial with Julien for the guitar parts, so that they are as complementary as possible. We meet in preprod Jérem, Julien and I to record the vocals, make the last adjustments and we go into the studio with David, our sixth man.
Aaron: For this album we recorded the drums in the premises of "Larsen" in Bègles, where we rehearse all year round. We stayed 3 days between Christmas and New Year's Day. Especially 3 nights besides because I made my catches between 18h and midnight! The other members stayed with David to listen to the catches. We were all very concentrated and concerned, I keep a great memory of this studio session.
Raph: We finished the last voice recordings just a few days before the confinement, so we really took advantage of this time to work on the mix and mastering. We never communicated as much as we did during that time and in retrospect I think the album really lived up to our expectations.
Was there also serendipity to achieve this result?
Raph : In the process of creating an album, serendipity is inevitable! Who can predict what the final result will look like before you see it? It seems complicated to me to dissociate art and serendipity. To tell you the truth, there were a lot of last minute changes on this album. The current cover was not the one initially planned, a song like The Atheist is almost unrecognizable compared to its first version... When you know the other side of the set, this album is really well named.
You are a band made for the stage, you have already toured a lot...how do you live this period of obligatory "break"? Does it encourage the composition of new songs ?
Aaron : It's clearly a very frustrating time. Releasing an album without being able to shoot it behind it is the worst scenario. Luckily every bad thing has an end, we'll shoot "Serendipity" as long as necessary once everything is back to normal. Probably with even more ardor and envy! As for the composition of new songs, the period will inevitably have an influence because our songs are always the reflection of what we can live or feel every day.
Raph : Until we can present this album live, we will do our best to make it live on social networks, even if we are well aware that at our level, Internet has its limits. We are obviously impatient to be able to hit the road again to discover it, and to be able to share it with as many people as possible across the country, and hopefully outside of it!
Can you tell us about the groups that have made the biggest impression on you? The ones that took Seeds OF Mary to the baptismal font?
Raph: There are so many. Every member of the group would have to be there to talk about it, but in concrete terms, I think that groups like The Beatles, David Bowie, Nirvana, Manson are part of the DNA of the group.
From a very personal point of view, I have to quote you Pink Floyd, which is for me the band that changed my life the most... Faith No More is also quite untouchable in my opinion... Today, we have the feeling to have managed to dilute all these common and individual influences to find our own label.
Aaron: Not much to add to that! All these bands have built us. When I'm writing my drum parts, or modifying what Julien sent me, I always have a plan in mind from Ginger Fish, Dave Grohl or even Ray Luzier (big crush on this drummer).
With the years, all these influences mix and you end up appropriating all this.
By the way, why "Seeds Of Mary" ?
Raph : It's Xavier, the first bass player of the band who brought this band name. There's no particular meaning, it was mostly aesthetic, there's a certain ambivalence and I think it actually works very well, even if most of the time the question is more about why we're not called "Mary's Seeds". (laughs)
Aaron: And because "Mary Of Seeds" doesn't mean anything.
