FR/ENG BLACK METAL INTERVIEW : LITANIE, L'OCCITANIE EN MODE BLACK

Bonjour à vous Litanie, un grand merci de répondre à mes questions...

Tout d'abord, pourriez vous retracer le parcours du groupe pour nos lecteurs ?

F. Gryp : Merci à toi de nous proposer cette interview !

Litanie, apparu en 2010, est un projet non seulement musical, mais aussi spirituel. Tout a commencé avec la volonté de rendre réel l'association d'un Black Metal plutôt traditionnel avec l'étude et la recherche spirituelle personnelle que chaque membre pouvait avoir.

Tout à ses débuts, Litanie comptait en son sein : Veines Noires (Hecate/Ostium) au chant, Svartheim (old Wintermoon) à la batterie, et moi-même aux guitares.

Le premier opus fût “Cadavres” sorti en tape en 2011, un split avec Désolation. Ce split vu le jour suite à ma rencontre avec F. Désolation et scella en quelque sorte l'avenir de Litanie.

Veines Noires et Svartheim ont quitté le projet après la sortie du split, et dans un même temps, F. Désolation l'a intégré pleinement, pour s'atteler à la basse et être un élément fondateur et pilier de ce que Litanie allait devenir.

Marchant à partir de là en duo, nous avons façonné le premier album de Litanie “In Nomine Humana, Tenebris”, première version sortie en 2013 en digipack sur Unlight Order Productions, label appartenant à F. Désolation.

Après un cheminement et différentes expériences dépendants du projet en lui-même et de ce qui l'influençait spirituellement, un deuxième album fût créé mais enterré pendant un temps car Litanie a splitté en 2015 par ma décision.

Grâce précédemment à Acid Vicious et maintenant au Scribe du Rock, c'est ici que vous saurez ce qu'il en ait de Litanie aujourd'hui...

F. Désolation : A l'époque j'avais créé un projet solo du nom de Désolation et un split avait été fait avec Litanie, où j'avais déjà pris la fonction de bassiste. À ce moment-là, même si niveau compo il y avait une cohérence avec l'esprit de Litanie, l'approche spirituelle du projet n'était pas encore totalement présente et je faisais, à mon sens, plus fonction de mercenaire. Par la suite, des expériences spirituelles en commun ont ouvert la Porte de ce que devait être Litanie et ainsi, j'ai intégré le projet.

Vous jouez un Black Metal particulièrement spirituel. Parlez-nous de vos inspirations en ce domaine ? La terre occitane dont vous venez a t'elle joué un rôle dans vos inclinaisons ?

F. Désolation : Je n'ai jamais fait partie de ces personnes qui se servent de grimoires ou autres artefacts pour faire quelconques magies etc... Disons que je me considère plus comme étant un catalyseur d'énergies (et l'art est une médiation à cela comme ça pouvait être pratiqué chez nos ancêtres).

La terre occitane, oui, a joué dans cette inclinaison.

F. Gryp : En effet, au delà du fait que Litanie soit un groupe de Black Metal, il est avant tout un projet spirituel comme je le disais dans la présentation. Je dirai même que Litanie a vécu une plus grosse part d'expériences hors musique, elle qui n'est justement que l'expression de ces choses vécues en réalité. De ce fait, nos inspirations sont vraiment très variées et dépendent de ce que nous avons alors vécu d'ordre spirituel.

Personnellement, j'ai toujours su (et non pas cru) que ce monde dans lequel nous atterrissons avec violence n'est pas le seul endroit auquel notre existence sera soumise, du coup j'ai été attiré très jeune par la spiritualité.

Dès 8-9 ans, j'aspirais à devenir Archéologue et plus particulièrement Égyptologue, le rapport à la mort et à l'au-delà qu'entretenait cette civilisation a été pour moi révélateur et a comblé le vide que je ressentais.

Par la suite je me suis intéressé et m'intéresse toujours à toutes formes de cosmogonies et à l'histoire des anciennes civilisations, les plus reculées et les plus énigmatiques étant forcément les plus excitantes à étudier !

Pour ce qui est de l'autre part qui touche à la spiritualité, c'est-à-dire les expériences concrètes, visibles et sensibles en rapport avec l'(les) autre(s) monde(s), le paranormal pour citer cela simplement, je sais que très peu de gens en parlent en règle générale et sont très vite taxés de fou, mais c'est ce qui influence le plus Litanie. Avec F.Désolation, nous avons vécu des choses individuellement et des choses en commun, qui dépassaient parfois l'entendement. Mon acolyte m'avait prévenu que notre rencontre ouvrirait forcément une porte vers des horizons que je connaissais pas, et il avait raison, mais sans ces expériences que je ne regrette aucunement, Litanie ne serait pas Litanie, et je ne serai pas qui je suis aujourd'hui.

- Petit aparté - Je suis étonné que ce sujet ne soit pas plus abordé dans le Black Metal qui est un milieu où l'on peut prôner n'importe laquelle de nos croyances, citer n'importe quel nom de dieu ou de démon, afficher en photo ou en peinture n'importe quelle scène païenne, n'importe quel symbole ou sigil.

Il existe beaucoup de paradoxes dans le Black Metal dont celui-ci qui voudrait que cette musique suinte un occultisme, qui au passage est à 99% issu du judéo-christianisme grâce aux différentes formes de Kabbale, tout en scandant “à bas les religions”... Même l'Asatru qui revient à la “mode” est une religion, à partir du moment où une communauté se forme autour d'une même croyance, il y a religion (qui signifie “relier”). -

Pour en revenir à ta question, les expériences paranormales et surnaturelles sont indissociables de l'occultisme et même de la simple vie spirituelle sincère, surtout pour celui qui pratique les rites liés à ses croyances, c'est pour cela qu'elles sont une grande influence pour la musique de Litanie.

Pour la deuxième partie de ta question, en ce qui me concerne, j'ai grandi en Touraine, je ne suis arrivé dans le Limousin qu'en 2011, mais l'énergie que dégagent l'Occitanie et son histoire m'ont tout de suite donné l'envie de m'y installer. Le rapport que Litanie peut avoir avec l'Occitanie réside à Puzinac. C'est un lieu reculé, trônant en haut d'une petite colline. Un lieu chargé d'histoires qui nous ramène à des temps Moyenâgeux. Beaucoup de secrets entourent Puzinac et ce qui a pu s'y passer, nous nous sommes nourri de ces légendes et cela habite pleinement Litanie !

Quelle inspiration trouvez vous dans le moyen-âge ?

F. Désolation : Cette période sombre et occulte a engendré un Égrégore puissant qui me fascine et me possède depuis mon plus jeune âge... cela a pu se refléter dans Litanie qui est le chant des âmes, et celui notamment de ceux qui ont engendrés cet Égrégore à cette époque.

F. Gryp : Et bien déjà celle qui ressort de Puzinac comme cité précédemment. Entre autres, des Templiers auraient non seulement foulé mais surtout habité ce lieu, et ce dans les derniers temps de l'existence de l'Ordre, c'est-à-dire à la période pendant laquelle on leur prête le fait d'avoir adoré Baphomet. Nos recherches concernant ce lieu sont venu corroborer en partie cela et mettre en lumière d'autres secrets qui sont liés à nos expériences sur ces terres.

Le Moyen-Âge engendre aussi dans notre imagination, tout un folklore qui nous parle, que ce soit d'un point de vue architectural, que ce soit cette magie du romantisme que cette période pouvait dégager, la linguistique qui était très riche contrairement à ce qu'on pourrait penser mais bien plus sérieuse et belle qu'aujourd'hui, la beauté de l'écriture calligraphique et des ouvrages enluminés, la richesse de la nature encore préservée, les autels sacrés de différentes croyances plus ou moins secrètement nichées ci et là.

Il existe encore quelques traces de tout cela qu'il faut absolument préserver et dans lesquelles il faut s'y replonger autant de fois que faire se peut !

Les groupes qui vous ont influencé au départ ?

F. Désolation : La scène norvégienne comme Mayhem (classique), la scène française pour ma part comme le Concilium et des groupes plus récents comme Culte des Ghoules...

F. Gryp : Je dirai Bathory, Immortal, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Endstille, Dissection, Summoning, Silencer, Shining. C'est une partie des groupes de Black qui me faisaient voyager au tout début et pour lesquels je me suis dit au moins une fois “putain il faut que je compose comme ça, c'est surpuissant !”. Mais je ne sais jamais vraiment quoi répondre à celà au final, il y a tellement de choses qu'on a écouté pour que Litanie sonne de cette façon, c'est surtout très inconscient je crois. Contrairement à Wintermoon, notre autre projet dans lequel mes influences sont totalement affichées et venant principalement de Bathory et Immortal, je ne calcule vraiment rien pour Litanie, les riffs et la structure des morceaux s'imposent d'eux-même. Pour dire, je crois que je n'ai jamais retiré un seul riff à Litanie qui m'aurait paru de trop ou inapproprié.

Et puis je ne t'ai cité que des groupes de Black parce qu'à l'époque je ne voulais faire que du Black, mais j'écoutais également beaucoup de Judas Priest, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Vader, Obscenity, Hypocrisy, etc. Je pense que j'ai été très influencé par le Death, le Thrash, le Heavy et le Hard également. En fait j'aime énormément les groupes qui ont des riffs que j'appelle “groove” qui explosent tout comme celui culte de Slayer dans “Angel of Death”, d'Urgehal dans “Goatcraft Torment” à partir de 1'40 ou celui d'Infernal War dans le récent “Into Dead Soil” à partir de 1'50 !

Vous avez fondé Litanie en 2010, et vous avez “splitté” après votre premier album, le fantastique In Nomine Humana Tenebris. Ayant lu votre interview chez Acid Vicious, je suis heureux d'apprendre que vous travaillez sur de nouveaux morceaux pour un album à paraître fin 2019 ! Pouvez vous nous en dire un peu plus ?

F. Gryp : Oui alors en réalité, le deuxième album qui s'intitule “Ad Absolutam Essentiae” a déjà été composé, enregistré et mixé en 2015, et avait été enterré suite à ma décision d'arrêter Litanie. Il a pour but de faire un voyage dans les frontières de la mort, qu'elles se trouvent d'un côté ou d'un autre du passage.

Cet album paraîtra totalement différent aux auditeurs je pense, aussi bien dans la couleur de l'ambiance qu'il dégage que dans la structure même de l'album. Il l'est en tout cas dans le fait que contrairement au premier album, la batterie est une vraie, enregistrée avec les moyens du bord mais avec toute la hargne que nous imposait Litanie durant cette période. Il est également différent car il ne comporte aucun chant, si ce n'est quelques voix peu orthodoxes et lointaines de F. Désolation durant le rituel musical présent sur le premier morceau “Carnalis Mortis”. Et l'album doit comporter presque autant de temps de Black Metal que de Dark Ambient je pense.

“Ad Absolutam Essentiae” est d'ors et déjà en écoute sur le Bandcamp officiel de Litanie avec toutes les informations dans le descriptif.

Vous avez réédité In Nomine... cette année chez le très bon label Non Posse Mori Records. Comment s'est faite la prise de contact avec eux ? La réédition en digipack est de toute beauté !

F. Gryp : Et bien c'est Petronius Heh qui m'a d'abord contacté pour rééditer le premier EP de Wintermoon, pour lequel j'ai refusé ne sachant pas vraiment ce que je souhaitais pour relancer le projet. Puis, avec les envies viscérales que Litanie me redonnait à ressentir, je me suis dit qu'il serait indispensable de rééditer “In Nomine Humana, Tenebris” et de sortir en exclusivité “Ad Absolutam Essentiae” qui ne devait plus rester endormi, ce que j'ai proposé à Petronius en lui exposant l'histoire du groupe, et qui a accepté.

En effet, on est très satisfait de cette réédition et les quelques retours que nous avons sont très positifs.

Votre prochain album paraîtra t'il chez eux également ?

F. Gryp : Tout à fait ! Si tout va bien, en fin d'année 2019 ou début d'année 2020. Nous avons hâte que ça paraisse, ce sera vraiment un aboutissement pour nous, ce deuxième album est une pierre angulaire de Litanie car il marque la fin d'une période.

Vous jouez également dans Wintermoon, pouvez vous nous en dire un mot ?

F. Gryp : Wintermoon est un projet que j'ai créé en 2007 avec Svartheim (ancien batteur de Litanie) et Sköll aux guitares, j'étais à la basse à ce moment-là. Le but était clair, nous étions tous les trois fans d'Immortal et nous souhaitions vraiment produire un groupe aussi puissant, rapide et atmosphérique qu'eux. Wintermoon fait bien entendue référence à leur titre “The Call of the Wintermoon”. Le projet ayant eu des hauts et des bas en matière de régularité de composition et répétition, nous n'étions pas très productifs. C'est en arrivant dans le Limousin et suite au retrait de Svartheim et de Sköll que j'ai pris la décision de tenir pleinement les rênes de Wintermoon et de demander à F. Désolation de l'intégrer à la basse. Nous avons enchaîné avec un premier EP “Autarky” qui a également été réédité très récemment chez Non Posse Mori Records en digipack.

Nous avions commencé à travailler sur un second EP mais ma décision d'arrêter Litanie avait aussi engendré l'arrêt de Wintermoon.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai pris la décision de reprendre Wintermoon en solo, et ainsi de terminer le second EP qui s'intitule “Heartfire” et qui sortira aussi chez Non Posse Mori Records. C'est un opus qui rend hommage à Bathory et à Quorthon en comptant notamment son voyage vers le Valhalla dans le premier titre “On the Path of Majestic Land” qui est déjà en écoute sur le Bandcamp officiel de Wintermoon.

Je compte enchaîner ensuite avec la préparation d'un premier album.

Votre vision du BM en 2019 ?

F. Désolation : Ma vision du BM en 2019... c'est pas pareil qu'en ' 99 ahah ! Le BM a évolué c'est sûr... disons qu'à la base, étant un mouvement underground et extrême ça s'est, comment dire... démocratisé et capitalisé avec la venue du net et s'est peuplé de beaucoup de mômes en quête de sensations fortes et de pseudo rébellion. C'est ce genre de parasite qui une fois rentré dans les normes, lâchera le BM (et vendre les disques à un prix de dingues). J'écoute du BM depuis les '90 (je ne suis pas devenu ce que je suis en écoutant du BM mais ce style a "matérialisé" ce que j'étais depuis le départ ; ce qui fait la différence avec cette mode actuelle) et même si les péquins ont toujours existé, là il y en a pas mal... également niveau jeunes groupes qui veulent faire comme à l'ancienne sauf qu'il leur manque quelque chose d'essentiel... l'Aura ! Après je ne veux pas généraliser car il y a toujours des groupes intéressants, planqués dans les caveaux et qui se renforcent pour survivre à cet holocauste de la connerie... dans un sens ce n'est pas plus mal.

F. Gryp : Pfff, franchement je ne sais même pas quoi te répondre ahah ! Est-ce qu'on peut encore vraiment parler de Black Metal en 2019 ? Non pas que ça n'existe plus, mais parce que ça n'a plus vraiment les mêmes intérêts et le but recherchés qu'à sa création, que le monde dans lequel il est produit a radicalement changé, que ceux qui font du Black aujourd'hui n'ont plus tout à fait les mêmes aspirations non plus... Et la façon d'aborder la composition et l'enregistrement de nos jours ont vachement participé à ce changement. On fait bien sûr partie du lot dans une certaine mesure, on fait partie de cette nouvelle génération du Black Metal, mais on tente justement de garder notre intégrité dans les traditions de ce style du mieux que l'on peut.

Après je n'arriverai pas à dire ce qui peut en ressortir de bon ou de mauvais concrètement, juste que j'ai beaucoup de mal personnellement à trouver un groupe ou simplement un album excellent depuis plusieurs années maintenant. Mais je crois que c'est moi qui suis un peu de nature blasée aussi, et je dois être un peu désensibilisé par rapport à mes débuts dans la découverte du Black.

Que pensez vous de la politisation qui galope dans le BM et oppose les “antifa” et les “fafs” ? En tant que groupe spirituel cela ne vous semble t'il pas antinomique avec ce que le BM doit être ?

F. Gryp : Très sincèrement, la politique telle qu'elle nous ait imposé dans ce monde, est une véritable merde ! Et ça n'a rien à faire en tout cas dans ce qui doit transparaître du Black Metal musicalement.

Nous nous considérons comme des êtres spirituels, et quelque soient nos croyances, nous sommes totalement contre le prosélytisme. Mais en ce sens, nous acceptons les croyances de chacun, nous souhaitons juste qu'on ne vienne pas nous les imposer au même titre que nous n'imposons pas les nôtres.

Là où je veux en venir, c'est que nous vivons aujourd'hui dans un monde où nous nous sommes employé à mettre à bas la spiritualité pour mettre cette chiasse de politique à la place, et ça, non seulement on nous l'impose, mais on nous en fait bouffer du matin au soir, c'est un sujet sur lequel je ne peux pas être calme.

En tout cas, je te dirai très honnêtement que je préfère largement passer du temps et partager mes idées avec un white qu'avec un rouge dans l'absolu, mais toutes ces histoires républicaines de droite ou de gauche, ça me file des boutons, et ça me donnerait presque envie de cogner. La masse n'a pas encore compris que c'est les 2 faces d'une même pièce... J'aimerais oser dire plus sur la véritable nature de la République Française et de ce que j'en pense, mais on va éviter la censure pour ton zine ahah !

Tout ce qui m'importe personnellement, c'est la protection de nos valeurs, de notre patrimoine, de notre culture, et malheureusement, toutes ces questions qui devraient être indissociables d'un peuple pour sa dignité et son intégrité, sont traitées, filtrées et surtout broyées par la politique. La politique est le fléau du monde moderne.

Pour le Black Metal, ces conneries gangrènent également la musique... Mais ce qui me fait le plus chier, c'est que l'on catalogue ou associe à la vitesse de(s) l'éclair(s) un groupe au National-Socialisme simplement parce qu'il traite de la guerre 14-18 ou 39-45, ou parce qu'il utilise dans ses artworks des symboles faisant la fierté de sa patrie, ou pire, parce qu'un groupe à des potes proche du NS dans ses relations. Qu'est-ce que ça peut foutre bordel, ça ne n'empêche personne de chier tous les matins !

Rien qu'avec ce qu'on dit là, on risque très fortement d'être étiqueté NSBM ahah !

Comme les idées imposées par nos maîtres impactent les lois, cela impacte forcément tous les milieux, le Black Metal n'y étant pas épargné. Et comme ce qu'ils décident sera de pire en pire, le Black Metal risquerait bien d'en prendre un bon coup dans la gueule avec le temps. Mais ce n'est pas dérangeant, ça lui permettra de retrouver sa splendeur transgressive et combattante avec de nouvelles batailles !

F. Désolation : J'ai connu le BM dont les concepts étaient indépendants de ce qui entoure l'humain dans sa vie quotidienne (le terrestre était banni, seul l'occulte aspirait l'humanité dans son abysse et ainsi formait le Tout... et c'est cela qui m'a parlé...) donc la politisation, à mon sens, n'a rien à foutre dans le BM. Après je ne cache pas que je suis fan des vieux groupes NSBM car musicalement ils représentent ce que j'aime dans le BM (noirceur, violence, épique, etc...)

Y'a t'il de nouveaux groupes qui trouvent grâce à vos yeux ?

F. Désolation : En France, le "renouveau" de la scène Marseillaise comme Ankrismah, Nekrokaos... la scène Toulousaine comme Malhkebre... même s'ils sont là depuis quand même un certain temps. Ensuite 13th Moon, Culte des Ghoules, Reverorum Ib Malacht, Drastus, Funeral Mantra, Ordo Vermis... Après j'aime bien des groupes comme Darkenhöld même si c'est plutôt du second plan.

F. Gryp : De nouveaux groupes non, mais en découvertes ou redécouvertes récentes pour ma part il y a : Negura Bunget, Reverorum Ib Malacht également, Batushka et Gaahl's Wyrd.

Il restera terré un moment dans les souterrains de Puzinac afin de méditer sur un troisième album qui sera le symbole de sa résurrection !

Hello Litanie, a big thank you for answering my questions...

First of all, could you retrace the group's journey for our readers?

F. Gryp: Thank you for offering us this interview!

Litanie, which appeared in 2010, is not only a musical but also a spiritual project. It all started with the desire to make real the association of a rather traditional Black Metal with the study and personal spiritual research that each member could have.

At the very beginning, Litania counted among its members: Black Veins (Hecate/Ostium) on vocals, Svartheim (old Wintermoon) on drums, and myself on guitars.

The first opus was "Cadavres" released on tape in 2011, a split with Désolation. This split was born following my meeting with F. Désolation and somehow sealed the future of Litany.

Black Veins and Svartheim left the project after the split came out, and at the same time, F. Désolation integrated it fully, to get down to the bass and be a founding element and pillar of what Litania would become.

Walking from there as a duo, we shaped Litanie's first album "In Nomine Humana, Tenebris", first version released in 2013 in digipack on Unlight Order Productions, a label owned by F. Sorry about that.

After a journey and different experiences depending on the project itself and what influenced it spiritually, a second album was created but buried for a while because Litanie split in 2015 by my decision.

Thanks to Acid Vicious and now Le Scribe Du Rock, it is here that you will know what it is about Litany today...

F. Desolation: At the time I had created a solo project called Desolation and a split had been made with Litanie, where I had already taken on the role of bass player. At that time, even if there was a coherence with the spirit of the Litany, the spiritual approach of the project was not yet totally present and I was, in my opinion, more of a mercenary. Subsequently, common spiritual experiences opened the Gateway to what Litany should be and so I joined the project.

You play a particularly mystic Black Metal. Tell us about your inspirations in this area? Has the Occitan land from which you come played a role in your inclinations?

F. Desolation: I have never been one of those people who use grimoires or other artifacts to do any magic etc.... Let's just say that I consider myself more like an energy catalyst (and art is a mediation to that as it could be practiced in our ancestors).

The Occitan land, yes, played in this inclination.

F. Gryp: Indeed, beyond the fact that Litany is a Black Metal band, it is above all a spiritual project as I said in the presentation. I would even say that Litania has had a greater share of experiences outside music, she who is precisely the expression of those things that she actually experienced. As a result, our inspirations are really very varied and depend on what we have experienced in the spiritual world.

Personally, I have always known (and not believed) that this world in which we end up with violence is not the only place to which our existence will be subjected, so I was attracted to spirituality at a very young age.

From the age of 8-9, I aspired to become an Archaeologist and more particularly an Egyptologist, the relationship to death and the afterlife that this civilization maintained was revealing for me and filled the void that I felt.

Thereafter I became interested and still am interested in all forms of cosmogonies and the history of ancient civilizations, the most remote and enigmatic being necessarily the most exciting to study!

As for the other part that touches on spirituality, that is, the concrete, visible and sensitive experiences in relation to the other world(s), the paranormal to quote that simply, I know that very few people generally talk about it and are very quickly called crazy, but that is what influences the most Litany. With F. Désolation, we experienced things individually and things in common, which sometimes exceeded our understanding. My sidekick had warned me that our meeting would necessarily open a door to horizons I didn't know, and he was right, but without these experiences that I don't regret at all, Litany would not be Litany, and I wouldn't be who I am today.

- A aside - I am surprised that this subject is not addressed more in Black Metal, which is an environment where we can advocate any of our beliefs, mention any name of god or demon, display in a photo or painting any pagan scene, any symbol or sign.

There are many paradoxes in Black Metal, including the one that would like this music to ooze an occultism, which is 99% Judeo-Christian in fact thanks to the different forms of Kabbalah, while chanting "down with religions"... Even the Asatru who returns to "fashion" is a religion, from the moment a community is formed around the same belief, there is religion (which means "to connect"). -

To return to your question, paranormal and supernatural experiences are inseparable from occultism and even from the simple sincere spiritual life, especially for those who practice the rites related to their beliefs, which is why they are a great influence for Litany music.

For the second part of your question, as far as I am concerned, I grew up in Touraine, I only arrived in Limousin in 2011, but the energy that Occitania and its history radiate immediately made me want to settle there. The relationship that Litany can have with Occitania resides in Puzinac. It is a remote place, sitting at the top of a small hill. A place steeped in history that takes us back to medieval times. Many secrets surround Puzinac and what may have happened there, we have been nourished by these legends and it fully inhabits Litany!

What inspiration do you find in the Dark Ages?

F. Desolation: This dark and occult period gave rise to a powerful egogore that fascinates me and possesses me from a very young age... this could have been reflected in Litany, which is the song of souls, and in particular that of those who created this egore at that time.

F. Gryp: And well already the one that comes out of Puzinac as mentioned above. Among other things, the Knights Templar would not only have trampled on this place, but above all inhabited it, and this in the last days of the Order's existence, that is, during the period when they were attributed the fact of having worshipped Baphomet. Our research on this place has partially corroborated this and brought to light other secrets that are related to our experiences on these lands.

The Middle Ages also generate in our imagination, a whole folklore that speaks to us, whether from an architectural point of view, whether it is this magic of romanticism that this period could unleash, the linguistics that was very rich contrary to what one might think but much more serious and beautiful than today, the beauty of calligraphic writing and illuminated works, the richness of nature still preserved, the sacred altars of different beliefs more or less secretly nested here and there.

There are still some traces of all this that absolutely must be preserved and in which we must dive back into it as many times as possible!

The bands that influenced you in the first place?

F. Desolation: The Norwegian scene like Mayhem (classic), the French scene for my part like the Concilium and more recent groups like Culte des Ghoules...

F. Gryp: I would say Bathory, Immortal, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Endstille, Dissection, Summoning, Silencer, Shining. It's a part of the Black bands that made me travel at the very beginning and for which I said to myself at least once "fuck, I have to compose like that, it's super powerful! But I never really know how to answer that in the end, there are so many things we listened to so that Litany sounds that way, it's especially very unconscious I think. Unlike Wintermoon, our other project in which my influences are totally displayed and coming mainly from Bathory and Immortal, I really don't calculate anything for Litania, the riffs and the structure of the songs are self-evident. To tell you the truth, I don't think I've ever removed a single riff from Litany that I thought was too much or inappropriate.

And then I only mentioned Black bands because at the time I only wanted to do Black, but I also listened to a lot of Judas Priest, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Vader, Obscenity, Hypocrisy, etc. I think I was very influenced by Death, Thrash, Heavy and Hard as well. In fact I really like bands that have riffs that I call "groove" that explode just like Slayer's cult in "Angel of Death", Urgehal's in "Goatcraft Torment" from 1'40 or Infernal War's in the recent "Into Dead Soil" from 1'50 !

You founded Litanie in 2010, and you "split" after your first album, the fantastic In Nomine Humana Tenebris. Having read your interview with Acid Vicious, I am happy to hear that you are working on new songs for an album to be released in late 2019! Can you tell us a little more about it?

F. Gryp: Yes, then in fact, the second album entitled "Ad Absolutam Essentiae" was already composed, recorded and mixed in 2015, and had been buried following my decision to stop Litania. Its purpose is to make a journey within the boundaries of death, whether they are on one side or the other of the passage.

This album will seem totally different to listeners, I think, both in the colour of the atmosphere it emanates and in the very structure of the album. It is in any case in the fact that, unlike the first album, the drums are real, recorded with the means at hand but with all the acrimony that Litania imposed on us during this period. It is also different because it does not include any singing, except for some unorthodox and distant voices of F. Desolation during the musical ritual present on the first track "Carnalis Mortis". And the album must include almost as much Black Metal time as Dark Ambient I think.

"Ad Absolutam Essentiae" is golden and already available on the official Litany Bandcamp with all the information in the description.

You have re-released In Nomine... this year on the very good label Non Posse Mori Records. How was the contact made with them? The reissue in digipack is beautiful!

F. Gryp: Well, it was Petronius Heh who first contacted me to reissue Wintermoon's first EP, for which I refused, not really knowing what I wanted to do to relaunch the project. Then, with the visceral desires that Litania gave me back to feeling, I thought it would be essential to reprint "In Nomine Humana, Tenebris" and to release exclusively "Ad Absolutam Essentiae" which should no longer remain asleep, which I proposed to Petronius by explaining the history of the group, and which accepted.

Indeed, we are very satisfied with this reissue and the few feedback we have is very positive.

Will your next album also be released by them?

F. Gryp: Absolutely! If all goes well, at the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020. We are looking forward to it, it will really be an achievement for us, this second album is a cornerstone of Litany because it marks the end of a period.

You also play in Wintermoon, can you tell us a bit about it?

F. Gryp: Wintermoon is a project I created in 2007 with Svartheim (former Litany drummer) and Sköll on guitars, I was on bass at that time. The goal was clear, we were all three Immortal fans and we really wanted to produce a band as powerful, fast and atmospheric as they were. Wintermoon of course refers to their title "The Call of the Wintermoon". The project had its ups and downs in terms of regularity of composition and repetition, so we were not very productive. It was when I arrived in the Limousin and following the withdrawal of Svartheim and Sköll that I decided to take full control of Wintermoon and ask F. Sorry to integrate it into the bass. We continued with a first EP "Autarky" which was also re-released very recently on Non Posse Mori Records in digipack.

We had started working on a second EP but my decision to stop Litany had also led to Wintermoon's stop.

Today, I decided to take Wintermoon back solo, and thus to finish the second EP called "Heartfire" which will also be released by Non Posse Mori Records. It is an opus that pays tribute to Bathory and Quorthon, including his journey to Valhalla in the first track "On the Path of Majestic Land", which is already being played on the official Wintermoon Bandcamp.

I plan to follow up with the preparation of a first album.

Your vision of the WB in 2019?

F. Desolation : My vision of the BM in 2019... it's not the same as in'99 ahah'! The BM has certainly evolved... let's say that at the base, being an underground and extreme movement, it has been, how to say... democratized and capitalized with the arrival of the net and has been populated by many kids in search of strong sensations and pseudo rebellion. It's this kind of parasite that once it gets back to normal, will drop the BM (and sell the records at a crazy price). I've been listening to the BM since the'90s (I didn't become what I am by listening to the BM but this style has "materialized" what I was from the beginning; which makes the difference with this current fashion) and even if the hillbillies have always existed, there are quite a few... also young bands who want to do like the old one except that they lack something essential... the Aura ! After that I don't want to generalize because there are always interesting groups, hidden in the cellars and who strengthen themselves to survive this holocaust of bullshit... in a way it's not bad either.

F. Gryp: Pfff, frankly I don't even know what to say to you ahah! Can we really still talk about Black Metal in 2019? Not that it no longer exists, but because it no longer really has the same interests and purpose as when it was created, that the world in which it is produced has radically changed, that those who make Black today no longer have quite the same aspirations either... And the way we approach composition and recording today has been a big part of this change. We are of course part of the lot to a certain extent, we are part of this new generation of Black Metal, but we are trying to keep our integrity in the traditions of this style as best we can.

Then I won't be able to say what can come out of it good or bad in concrete terms, just that I personally have a lot of trouble finding a band or just an excellent album for several years now. But I think I'm the one who's a little jaded too, and I have to be a little desensitized about my early days in discovering Black.

What do you think of the politicization that is growing in Black Metal and pits "antifa" against "fascists"? As a spiritual group, doesn't this seem to you to be contradictory to what Black Metal  should be?

F. Gryp: Very honestly, politics as it has imposed on us in this world is a real shit! And it doesn't have to do anything in any case in what should show through in Black Metal musically.

We consider ourselves to be spiritual beings, and whatever our beliefs, we are totally against proselytism. But in this sense, we accept everyone's beliefs, we just wish that they would not be imposed on us in the same way that we do not impose our own.

What I'm getting at is that we're living today in a world where we've worked to put spirituality down to put that political crap in its place, and that, not only is it imposed on us, but it's made us eat it from morning to night, it's a subject on which I can't be calm.

In any case, I'll tell you very honestly that I'd rather spend time and share my ideas with a white man than with a red one in absolute terms, but all these republican stories from right or left, it gives me pimples, and it almost makes me want to hit. The mass has not yet understood that it is the 2 sides of the same part.... I'd like to say more about the true nature of the French Republic and what I think of it, but we'll avoid censorship for your zine ahah!

All that matters to me personally is the protection of our values, our heritage, our culture, and unfortunately, all those issues that should be inseparable from a people for its dignity and integrity, are treated, filtered and above all crushed by politics. Politics is the scourge of the modern world.

For Black Metal, this bullshit also gangrene the music.... But what pisses me off the most is that a group is catalogued or associated with the speed of lightning with National Socialism simply because it deals with the 14-18 or 39-45 war, or because it uses in its artworks symbols that make its country proud, or worse, because a group has friends close to the NS in its relations. What the hell does it matter, it doesn't stop anyone from taking a shit every morning!

Just from what we're saying here, there's a very high risk of being labelled NSBM ahah!

As the ideas imposed by our masters impact the laws, it necessarily impacts all environments, Black Metal not being spared. And as what they decide will get worse and worse, Black Metal may well take a big hit in the face over time. But it's not disturbing, it will allow her to regain her transgressive and fighting splendour with new battles!

F. Desolation: I knew the WB whose concepts were independent of what surrounds humans in their daily lives (the earthly was banished, only the occult sucked humanity into its abyss and thus formed the Whole... and this is what spoke to me...) so politicization, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the WB. After that I don't hide that I'm a fan of the old NSBM bands because musically they represent what I like about the BM (darkness, violence, epic, etc...)

Are there any new bands that find favor in your eyes?

F. Desolation: In France, the "renewal" of the Marseille's scene like Ankrismah, Nekrokaos... the Toulouse scene like Malhkebre... even if they have been there for some time. Then 13th Moon, Cult of Ghoules, Reverorum Ib Malacht, Drastus, Funeral Mantra, Ordo Vermis... After that I like bands like Darkenhöld even if it's more of a background.

F. Gryp: New groups not, but in recent discoveries or rediscoveries for me there are: Negura Bunget, Reverorum Ib Malacht also, Batushka and Gaahl's Wyrd.
