Bonjour A. ! Bienvenue dans le Scribe. On commence par une question classique : peux-tu présenter Inherits The Void aux lecteurs du Scribe ?
Bonjour, tout d’abord merci pour ton intérêt et pour cette interview. Pour faire bref, ITV est un projet musical d’orientation Black Metal qui est né cette année. Il s’agit d’un « one man band », comme on dit, entièrement dirigé et géré par moi-même. J'avais initialement entrepris ce projet afin de pouvoir développer des idées qu’il ne m’était pas possible d’exploiter, pour des raisons musicales, au sein du groupe LYRSIDE dont je suis également membre. Je précise que le souhait de sortir un EP sous le nom d'ITV n'est que très récent. A l’origine, les compositions que je propose n’étaient destinées qu’à rester dans mes tiroirs. Il s’agissait d’un moyen de faire de la musique mais de façon confidentielle, seulement pour moi-même. Ce sont des amis qui m'ont amené à aller de l'avant et à sortir cet EP en tant que véritable projet.
Tu viens de sortir « Memoires » ton premier Ep. Peux-tu nous en parler ?
« Mémoires » est donc le premier EP réalisé sous le nom d’ITV. Il s'agit plus d’une démo test en réalité. Cet EP inclut six titres entièrement autoproduits. Je voulais proposer des compositions où je pouvais me faire plaisir musicalement parlant et qui seraient un réceptacle à certaines de mes influences musicales personnelles.
N'est-ce pas étrange d'intituler un premier Ep « mémoires » ? déjà ? de quelles mémoires s'agit-il ?
Je comprends cette interrogation. Déjà, je précise que cela n’a rien à voir avec mes mémoires personnelles. Cela n’intéresserait personne d’ailleurs (haha). Sous le titre de « Mémoires » se cache en réalité la nécessité de comprendre l’évolution de l’humanité et des sociétés à travers le spectre du passé, des erreurs commises mais aussi des réussites accomplies. Les montagnes présentes sur la couverture rendent compte de ce temps qui s’écoule. Ce sont des témoins stoïques de l’histoire. Notre environnement reste tandis que nous, nous ne sommes que de passage, éphémères. Cela permet de relativiser notre place à l’échelle du temps. Je précise que je suis archéologue de métier et donc sensible à cette thématique. D’autant plus lorsque l’histoire et, de façon plus large, le passé sont repris et déformés par de nombreuses personnes pour nourrir des desseins personnels et haineux.
En tant que one-man band on va dire que tu t'inscris grosso modo dans un registre « post-black ». Comment en es-tu arrivé à pratiquer cette musique ?
Je suis à la base un grand amateur de Black Metal scandinave des années 1990. Pour ce qui est du « Post Black », je me suis intéressé à cette mouvance avec la découverte de la scène française affiliée au cours de la dernière décennie : Regarde Les Hommes Tomber ou Déluge pour ne citer qu’eux. De nombreux groupes internationaux s’ajoutent à la liste, notamment Au-Dessus, Downfall Of Gaia, Wolves In The Throne Room ou même Der Weg Einer Freiheit dans une certaine mesure. Ce que j’apprécie avec ce style, c’est l’incorporation d’éléments stylistiques que l’on ne retrouve que rarement dans le Black Metal traditionnel. Je pense notamment à des influences pouvant provenir du Sludge, du Post-Hardcore ou bien même du Crust. Je suis aussi particulièrement sensible au caractère atmosphérique qui dirige les compositions relatives au style.
Intituler ton groupe Inherits The Void signifie-t-il que tu fais partie d'une génération qui considère avoir hérité du vide ?
Question difficile à répondre et vaste réflexion que cette interrogation haha. Je vais toutefois essayer de fournir brièvement le fond de ma pensée. Il est vrai que notre génération doit faire avec les erreurs commises depuis plus d’un siècle. Nous vivons à une époque où les progrès s’accélèrent à vitesse grand V mais qui, souvent, se font au détriment de beaucoup de choses : notre environnement, notre capacité à développer notre propre réflexion ou encore notre tolérance et notre vie en communauté. En plus de cela, s’ajoute le fait que nos sociétés, mêmes celles dites « occidentales » subissent de nombreuses régressions sociales et sociétales. Alors oui, il s’agit plus d’un non-sens mais n’est-ce pas également une certaine forme de déclin et de vide dans le fond ?
Peux-tu nous parler de tes influences musicales ?
Comme je le mentionnais, mes principales influences sont issues de la scène scandinave. J'ai un faible particulier pour la scène Black Metal (et assimilée) des années 90 (Vinterland, Mork Gryning, Sacramentum, Dissection, Noctes) ou encore pour la scène Death Metal mélodique de cette même décennie (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Gates Of Ishtar, Unanimated, etc.). Si ce sont là mes principales orientations, j'en ai également de nombreuses autres : Morbid Angel, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Dismember, Hate Eternal, Textures ... J'essaye de ne pas me cloisonner même si j'ai mes classiques.
J'ai beaucoup apprecié l'Ep. Pour moi le seul défaut est le mix du chant. J'imagine facilement que c'est voulu, mais le fait que le chant soit si lointain et perdu dans le mix m'a un peu gêné. Pourquoi ce choix ?
Il est vrai que cette question de la voix revient régulièrement. Je le comprends très bien. Il faut savoir qu'au début et pendant « longtemps », ce projet ne devait être qu'instrumental. J'ai ensuite ajouté des parties vocales au grès de l’évolution de mes envies. Malgré tout, je ne voulais pas que celles-ci prennent le pied sur la musique. Je les imaginais davantage comme une « nappe » qui viendrait habiller les compositions. Si c'était à refaire, je garderai cette même direction mais peut-être de façon différente. C'est un aspect qui peut diviser en effet et je l’accepte : certains adhérent tandis que d'autres sont moins réceptifs. Sur la prochaine réalisation il en sera autrement je pense.
Les riffs sont inspirés, bravo ! Ce n'est pas si courant. As-tu une formation musicale ou es-tu autodidacte ?
Merci beaucoup pour le compliment, cela fait plaisir à entendre. J'ai une maigre et lointaine formation mais je suis essentiellement autodidacte : je n’ai jamais été réceptif au solfège trop théorique selon moi. J'ai appris à jouer et à écrire de la musique avec des amis avec lesquels je jouais dans un groupe il y a de nombreuses années et qui ont été et sont toujours de très bons conseils. Je n'ai jamais voulu faire dans l'original. Je préfère faire ce que j'aime écouter et jouer avant tout.

La suite pour ITV ? Tu travailles sur un album ?
Je travaille actuellement sur l’écriture d’une suite à « Mémoires ». A priori ce sera un album si je reste satisfait des compositions au fur et à mesure de l'avancement. J’espère pouvoir débuter les enregistrements dès cet hiver et pourquoi pas le sortir au printemps prochain. J’ai le souhait d’avoir un rendu plus professionnel cette fois et je pense donc faire appel à un studio, au moins pour masteriser le tout. Affaire à suivre.
Si ITV était une citation, un proverbe ?
Je n' y avais jamais pensé ... A la rigueur, une citation de Proudhon : « L'homme a beau étendre le cercle de ses idées, sa lumière n'est toujours qu'une étincelle promenée dans la nuit immense qui l'enveloppe » (1858).

Auvergne is famous for the consequent number of quality black metal bands that have trodden its volcanoes. Inherits The Void, a young combo, proposes a melodic black metal post influenced by the best quality hardcore post. A. Tell us a bit more about this first album and the origins of the band...
Hello A.! Welcome to the Scribe. We start with a classic question: can you introduce Inherits The Void to the Scribe's readers?
Hello, first of all thank you for your interest and for this interview. To make a long story short, ITV is a Black Metal oriented musical project that was born this year. It's a "one man band", as they say, entirely directed and managed by myself. I had initially undertaken this project in order to be able to develop ideas that it was not possible for me to exploit, for musical reasons, within the band LYRSIDE of which I'm also a member. I specify that the wish to release an EP under the name of ITV is only very recent. Originally, the compositions I propose were only intended to remain in my drawers. It was a way to make music but in a confidential way, only for myself. It's friends who led me to go ahead and release this EP as a real project.
You've just released "Memoires" your first EP, can you tell us about it ?
"Memoires" is the first EP released under the name of ITV. It's more of a test demo in reality. This EP includes six titles entirely self-produced. I wanted to propose compositions where I could enjoy myself musically and which would be a receptacle for some of my personal musical influences.
Isn't it strange to call a first Ep "memoires"? already? And what memories are we talking about?
I understand this question. First of all, I would like to make it clear that it has nothing to do with my personal memories. It would not interest anyone else (haha). Under the title of "Memoires" lies the need to understand the evolution of humanity and societies through the spectrum of the past, the mistakes made but also the successes achieved. The mountains on the cover give an account of this passing of time. They are stoic witnesses to history. Our environment remains while we are only passing by, ephemeral. This makes it possible to put our place in time into perspective. I would like to point out that I am an archaeologist by profession and therefore sensitive to this theme. All the more so when history and, more broadly speaking, the past are taken up and distorted by many people to feed personal and hateful agendas.
As a one-man band, we will say that you are more or less in a "post-black" register. How did you come to practice this music?
I'm basically a big fan of Scandinavian Black Metal from the 1990s. As far as "Post Black" is concerned, I got interested in this movement with the discovery of the French affiliated scene during the last decade : Look at Les Hommes Tomber or Déluge to name only them. Numerous international bands have been added to the list, including Au-Dessus, Downfall Of Gaia, Wolves In The Throne Room or even Der Weg Einer Freiheit to a certain extent. What I like about this style is the incorporation of stylistic elements that are rarely found in traditional Black Metal. I think in particular of influences that can come from Sludge, Post-Hardcore or even Crust. I'm also particularly sensitive to the atmospheric character that drives the style related compositions.
Does the title of your band Inherits The Void mean that you are part of a generation that considers to have inherited the void ?
Difficult question to answer and vast reflection that this question haha. However, I will try to provide a brief background to my thinking. It is true that our generation has to deal with the mistakes made for more than a century. We live in an era where progress is accelerating at a great speed but often to the detriment of many things: our environment, our ability to develop our own thinking, or our tolerance and community life. On top of that, we must add the fact that our societies, even those known as "Western", are undergoing numerous social and societal regressions. So yes, it is more a question of nonsense, but isn't it also a certain form of decline and emptiness in the background?
Can you tell us about your musical influences?
As I mentioned, my main influences come from the Scandinavian scene. I have a particular weakness for the Black Metal (and related) scene of the 90's (Vinterland, Mork Gryning, Sacramentum, Dissection, Noctes) or the melodic Death Metal scene of the same decade (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Gates Of Ishtar, Unanimated, etc.). If these are my main orientations, I also have many others: Morbid Angel, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Dismember, Hate Eternal, Textures ... I try not to compartmentalize myself even if I have my classics.
I really enjoyed the Ep. For me the only defect is the mix of the vocals. I can easily imagine that this is intentional, but the fact that the vocals are so far away and lost in the mix bothered me a little. Why this choice
It is true that this question of voice comes up regularly. I understand it very well. You have to know that at the beginning and for "a long time", this project was only intended to be instrumental. I then added vocal parts as my desires evolved. In spite of everything, I didn't want them to get a foothold in the music. I imagined them more as a "tablecloth" that would dress the compositions. If I had to do it all over again, I would keep the same direction but perhaps in a different way. It is an aspect that can indeed divide and I accept it: some people adhere while others are less receptive. On the next project I think it will be different.
The riffs are inspired, bravo! It's not that common. Do you have a musical background or are you self-taught?
Thank you very much for the compliment, it's nice to hear. I have a meagre and distant formation but I am essentially self-taught: I have never been receptive to solfège too theoretical in my opinion. I learned to play and write music with friends with whom I played in a band many years ago and who were and still are very good counsellors. I never wanted to do in the original. I prefer to do what I like to listen to and play above all.

What's next for ITV? Are you working on an album?
I am currently working on writing a sequel to "Memoires". A priori it will be an album if I remain satisfied with the compositions as they progress. I hope to be able to start recording this winter and why not release it next spring. I hope to have a more professional look this time and I'm thinking of using a studio, at least to master the whole thing. To be continued.
