Bonjour Rosenkreuz ! Vous sortez un album, Crystal City chez Adipocere.Pouvez vous nous en dire un peu plus ?
LAbbé S.M. : Bonjour cher ami et avant tout , merci pour ton invitation et pour tout ce que tu fais pour la scène extrême. En effet, nous avons eu la chance d être signés par Christian, le boss d'Adipocere. Rosenkreuz fut son coup de coeur et, à vrai dire, on ne s y attendait pas. Crystal City est une nouvelle étape pour le groupe nous avons pris nos marques dans notre façon de nous exprimer à travers notre style.
C'est l'aboutissement d un travail musical de longue haleine afin que Rosenkreuz puisse commencer à laisser sa trace dans l'alternatif français. Crystal City est fait de plusieurs nuances de goth et d'indus où chaque auditeur pourra, je l'espère, trouver ses marques.
Phil: A près avoir sorti notre 1er EP, Infinite , nous avons été signés chez Adipocere Records peu de temps après. De cette union est née, tout d’abord, une réédition d’ Infinite au format vinyle avec des remixes inédits. Puis nous avons enregistré Crystal City l’été dernier en studio et il est sorti le 21/11/2019 Crystal City est un conte initiatique où le protagoniste, jeune et inexpérimenté, évolue dans un monde absurde qu’il ne comprend pas. Les onze titres de l album constituent une suite de tableaux mettant en scène son histoire, dans un univers postmoderne
Vous évoluez dans un genre Metal/Industriel où l'on peut déceler l'influence de Marilyn Manson. Est ce un modèle pour vous musicalement ?
LAbbé S.M. : Bien sûr Marilyn M anson fa it partie des gra nds de la scène indus . Il a lui même récupéré les codes de la musique gothique et industrielle et il les a synthétisés à sa façon . On s'inspire en fait des mêmes codes qui l ont inspiré lui.
Manson est l'un des principaux modèles de la scène indus au même titre que Nine Inch Nails Ministry ou Rammstein
Phil : Les albums phares de Marilyn Manson (Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals et Holy Wood) sont à mi chemin entre le gothisme et la culture industrielle, comme la musique de Rosenkreuz. Ses textes et son esthétique visuelle nous ont inspiré.
PJV : Oui c'est l une de nos influences , mais nous somme s bien plus influencés par des groupes de « Neue Deutsche H ärte » tels que Rammstein ou Oomph qui ont un son plus Metal/Indus . Pour en revenir à Marilyn Manson, c'est plus son côté goth qui nous f ascine.
Gabriel : En partie oui , Marilyn Manson est le reflet de la rock star ayant évolué au sein d’un monde connecté, industriel, brutal et décadent. Il illustre des thématiques gothiques contemporaines que nous partageons à travers nos morceaux, notamment les penchants décadents, le vinyle et les rapports de domination et de soumission
J'ai cru entendre aussi des sonorités proches de Treponem Pal. Que pensez-vous de ce groupe ?
LAbbé S.M : Merci pour le clin d oeil à Treponem Pal . C ’est grâce à eux que la France a une scène indus et, rien que pour ça, respect. Si j ai bonne mémoi re, le groupe s'est formé en 1986 et ils sont encore là 35 ans après . C'est une grande source d'inspiration pour nous qui voulons continuer notre musique pendant très longtemps. Je me souviens encore de leur passage sur Canal + en 1998 quand un gars du public était monté sur scène pour exhiber ses parties intimes . Du coup , le groupe l'avait gardé et il les a vait accompagnés en tournée (NdS : Cette version est un peu "romancée" y compris par le groupe, en vérité ce danseur Trans est un pro et il était prévu au programme...pas par l'équipe de Canal + par contre !)
Gabriel : Treponem Pal est un groupe aux inspirations multiples qui s’applique à rechercher un coté dansant et groovy d ans l a musique, qui donne envie à l’humain de bou ger son corps. Une valeur que nous partageons et qui, selon moi , est indispensable.
Vous décrivez un univers décadent, rempli de drogues, de sexe (et de rock'n'roll bien sûr !). Quel est le message du groupe ?
LAbbé S.M. Rosenkreuz se veut narrateur et non in fluenceur . Nous sommes tous conscients des dangers de la drogue . Il est intéressant de souligner qu ’en anglais « drug » signifie aussi bien médicament que drogue . Derrière nos textes, nous défendons un certain hédonisme, l ’idée que le plaisir charnel peut conduire au plaisir spirituel. Un corps sain pour un esprit sain. Nous invitons l ’auditeur à se désinhiber pour prendre ses distances avec ce monde qui veut nous emprisonner . C’est une quête pour le bien être, une révolution contre la souffran ce terrestre. Notre message se veut également de nature festive, nous voulons retrouver le bonheur à travers les plaisirs simples de la vie.
Phil : Sex, Drugs & Rosenkreuz Dans une optique postmoderne, nous avons voulu nous réapproprier les principaux avatars de la culture rock (le fameux slogan « Sex, drugs & rock’n’roll » et les interpréter à notre façon. Nous sommes en quelque sorte des reporters de l'extrême, décrivant un univers sombre fait de sexe et de drogues.
En plus de l’aspect provoquant, c’est bien entendu une invitation dionysiaque à la fête où tout est permis (dans le respect de l’autre !) et un hymne à la liberté retrouvée le temps d’un concert, d’une tournée
PJV : Que la société actuelle n'est pas faite pour nous. Que les interdits depuis la nuit des temps attirent mais que la société s'efforce de les rendre tabous, parfois sans raison. Concernant la drogue, la seule qui soit bien c'est le sexe
Yoann : L'idée c'est surtout de trancher avec le routine boulot métro dodo. Avec Rosenkreuz tu laisses libre cours à tes fantasmes , tu oublie s les codes, finie la pression d'une société qui t'oppresse constamment et te pousse à rentrer dans le moule. Avec Rosenkreuz tu rentre s dans LA moule
Vivien : Pour moi cet album est plus une représentation d e notre univers . Le message serait un encouragement à être soi même, à faire ce qui nous plaît, s’amuser et profiter des moments que la vie nous apporte, sans tenir compte des jugements, des règles et des principes qui peuvent orienter nos choix. Vivre en totale liberté tant que celle ci n’impacte pas celle des autres.
La production de l'album est énorme ! Comment et grâce à qui avez vous obtenu ce son ?
LAbbé S .M : La production de Crystal City s'est faite avec Thibault Bernard de Convulsound Productions. Plus tôt, j'avais eu la chance de travailler avec lui pour mon projet de Thrash brutal death, Sharked. J'avais été bluffé par ses capacités techniques et l'aisance avec laquelle il fait vivre le son durant les sessions d'enregistrement. Nous avions également été séduits par le rendu d'Infinite, notre premier EP, produit par ses soins. C'est pourquoi nous avons de nouveau fait appel à lui pour Crystal City. Il a vraiment été capable de mixer nos sons acoustiques, électriques et synthétiques en toute cohérence. Son professionnalisme mérite d'être salué !

N'avez vous pas l'impression que le Goth est de retour en ce moment ? Après les années 2000 où le genre semblait un peu en baisse...
LAbbé S.M. Effectivement, on constate une grosse tendance gothique ces dernières années, notamment dans la mode. Certains artistes « mainstream » commencent à s'habiller de façon très rock'n'roll, voire gothique. Nous assistons à un retour de l'esthétique de la fin des années 70 et du début des années 80. Le gothisme est de retour dans la culture populaire
Phil : Le gothique a toujours été là t andis que d’autres mouvements musicaux s’ essoufflaient. Il s’agit , selon moi, d’une culture qui regroupe une multiplicité de genres musicaux qui s’y reconnaissent et sont en perpétuelle évolution. Le gothique a toujours été là, à travers les livres , les films, les séries, les jeux vidéo et bien entendu la musique
PJV : Le style goth est présent de nos jours notamment grâce à la pop culture qui se l'est approprié (jeux vidéos, cinéma, livres). On peut penser à des films comme Blade et Matrix. Cela a permis à beaucoup de gens de se familiariser avec la culture goth.
Par contre, j'ai l'impression qu'en France la musique gothique est moins écoutée qu'avant...
Gabriel : En France, en dehors de Paris je pense que non . Il n'y a qu'un petit noyau dur de personnes de moins de 30 ans qui aiment et vivent la culture gothique. On constate que du fait du nombre limité de personnes « gothiques », les événements dans cette thématique ont du mal à apparaître en de hors de la capitale, qu’il s’agisse de soirées ou de concerts. Il y a un très grand nombre de fans de Rammstein de Marilyn Manson et autres pointures du genre mais de là à ce que des concerts ou des soirées de style goth et indus voient le jour un peu partout dans l'hexagone, je pense qu’il va falloir qu’on donne tous de nous mêmes

Rosenkreuz... Christian Rosenkreuz ! Quel est votre rapport à la Rose Croix ?
Phil : Bien vu C hristian Rosenkreuz était un alchimiste. J’ ai toujours perçu la composition musicale comme un processus alchimique, le morceau étant tel une pierre qu’il faut tailler jusqu’à en faire du diamant. La musique de Rosenkreuz étant
mystique et initiatique et le fruit d’un long processus de composition , ce nom me semblait pertinent pour nommer le groupe.
Yoann : Le hasard a voulu que le p atron d'Adipocere , qui a signé Rosenkreuz s'appelle Christian : serait ce un signe ?

Vos albums préférés de tous les temps ?
LAbbé S.M. : Dans l'ordre Arise de Sepultura, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh de Cradle of Filth, The Butterfly Effect de Moonspell et De Cercle en Cercle de Mass Hysteria.
Phil : Difficile de choisir, il y en a tellement. Si je ne devais en retenir que trois, je dirais Herzeleid de Rammstein Mechanical Animals de Marilyn Manson et Dahlia de X Japan.
PJV : Je suis très orienté electro pour ma part (c'est mon coté s ynthétique ça. J'apprécie beaucoup d artistes de ce milieu ( Angerfist, Ace Ventura, Captain Hook, Combichrist, Imagine Dragons, Infected Mushroom , Tiesto. Par contre, difficile de dire quels sont mes albums préférés. Si je devais choisir parmi les disques qui m'ont le plus marqué ces derniers temps , je dirais Rammstein 2019 et la bande originale de Doom (2016)
Vivien : Choix difficile. Je dirais Mutter de Rammstein car il a vraiment marqué mon adolescence.
La suite pour Rosenkreuz ?
Phil : Travailler et mettre en place des shows toujours plus dingues pour 2020 .
Avancer dans la composition de s titres du second album. Et
j 'ajouterai que nous sommes en train de préparer un clip qui sortira prochainement
PJV : Je vois la suite d'un regard positif. D'ici 3 ans, un second album, encore meilleur que celui ci. Plein de dates pour vous faire danser. Et surtout la poursuite d'un rêve , celui de continuer à jouer notre propre musique
Gabriel : Un mariage entre deux musiciens du groupe peut être ? Un concert à Berlin
Vivien : Un second album , des concerts et peut être un jour réaliser un rêve : jouer dans un grand festival en plein air.

Hello Rosenkreuz! You're releasing an album, Crystal City on Adipocere, can you tell us more about it?
LAbbé S.M. : Hello dear friend and above all, thank you for your invitation and for everything you do for the extreme scene. Indeed, we were lucky enough to be signed by Christian, the boss of Adipocere. Rosenkreuz was his favorite and, to tell the truth, we didn't expect it. Crystal City is a new step for the band we have taken our marks in the way we express ourselves through our style.
It's the result of a long musical work so that Rosenkreuz can start to leave its mark in the French alternative. Crystal City is made of several nuances of goth and indus where each listener will, I hope, be able to find his marks.
Phil: After releasing our first EP, Infinite, we were signed to Adipocere Records shortly afterwards. From this union was born, first of all, a re-release of Infinite in vinyl format with unreleased remixes. Then we recorded Crystal City last summer in the studio and it was released on 21/11/2019. Crystal City is an initiatory tale where the young and inexperienced protagonist evolves in an absurd world he doesn't understand. The eleven tracks of the album are a series of paintings that stage his story in a postmodern universe.
You evolve in a Metal/Industrial genre where we can detect the influence of Marilyn Manson. Is it a model for you musically?
LAbbé S.M. : Of course Marilyn M anson is part of the industrial scene. He himself has recovered the codes of gothic and industrial music and he has synthesized them in his own way. In fact, we're inspired by the same codes that inspired him.
Manson is one of the main models of the industrial scene, just like Nine Inch Nails Ministry or Rammstein.
Phil: Marilyn Manson's flagship albums (Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood) are halfway between gothism and industrial culture, like the music of Rosenkreuz. Her lyrics and visual aesthetics have inspired us.
PJV : Yes this is one of our influences, but we are much more influenced by Neue Deutsche Härte bands like Rammstein or Oomph who have a more Metal/Indus sound. Coming back to Marilyn Manson, it's more her gothic side that we are influenced by.
Gabriel : Partly yes, Marilyn Manson is the reflection of the rock star who evolved in a connected, industrial, brutal and decadent world. He illustrates contemporary gothic themes that we share through our songs, including decadent leanings, vinyl and relationships of domination and submission.
I thought I heard sounds close to Treponem Pal, too. What do you think of this band?
LAbbé S.M : Thanks for the wink to Treponem Pal . It's thanks to them that France has an industrial scene and, just for that, respect. If I remember correctly, the band was formed in 1986 and they are still here 35 years later. It's a great source of inspiration for us who want to continue our music for a very long time. I still remember their appearance on Canal + in 1998 when a guy from the audience went on stage to show off his private parts. So the band kept him and he went on tour with them (NdS : This version is a bit "romanticized" even by the band, in truth this Trans dancer is a pro and he was on the program...not by the Canal + team though) !
Gabriel : Treponem Pal is a group with multiple inspirations which applies itself to seek a dancing and groovy side in the music, which gives desire to the human to move its body. A value that we share and which, according to me, is essential.
You describe a decadent universe, full of drugs, sex (and rock'n'roll of course!). What is the band's message?
LAbbé S.M. Rosenkreuz wants to be a narrator and not a fluencer. We are all aware of the dangers of drugs. It is interesting to note that "drug" means both medicine and drug. Behind our texts, we defend a certain hedonism, the idea that carnal pleasure can lead to spiritual pleasure. A healthy body for a healthy mind. We invite the listener to disinhibit himself in order to distance himself from this world which wants to imprison us. It is a quest for well-being, a revolution against the suffering of this earthly world. Our message is also of a festive nature, we want to regain happiness through the simple pleasures of life.
Phil: Sex, Drugs & Rosenkreuz In a postmodern perspective, we wanted to re-appropriate the main avatars of rock culture (the famous slogan "Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll") and interpret them in our own way. We are in a way reporters of the extreme, describing a dark universe made of sex and drugs.
In addition to the provocative aspect, it's of course a Dionysian invitation to a party where everything is allowed (with respect for the other!) and a hymn to freedom regained for the time of a concert, a tour...
PJV: That today's society is not for us. That the forbidden since the dawn of time attract us, but that society tries to make them taboo, sometimes for no reason. Concerning drugs, the only one that is good is sex.
Yoann: The idea is mainly to break with the routine of working on the metro and sleeping. With Rosenkreuz you give free rein to your fantasies, you forget the codes, you forget the pressure of a society that constantly oppresses you and pushes you to fit into the mould. With Rosenkreuz you'll fit into THE mould.
Vivien : For me this album is more a representation of our universe. The message would be an encouragement to be ourselves, to do what we like, to have fun and enjoy the moments that life brings us, without taking into account the judgments, rules and principles that can guide our choices. To live in total freedom as long as it does not impact the freedom of others.
The production of the album is huge! How and thanks to whom did you get this sound?
LAbbé S.M : The production of Crystal City was done with Thibault Bernard from Convulsound Productions. Earlier, I had the chance to work with him on my brutal death thrash project, Sharked. I had been amazed by his technical abilities and the ease with which he brought the sound to life during the recording sessions. We were also impressed by the rendering of Infinite, our first EP, produced by him. That's why we called him again for Crystal City. He was really able to mix our acoustic, electric and synthetic sounds coherently. His professionalism deserves to be praised!

Don't you feel like the Goth is back right now? After the 2000s when the genre seemed to be on the decline...
LAbbé S.M. Indeed, there has been a big gothic trend these last few years, especially in fashion. Some "mainstream" artists are starting to dress in a very rock'n'roll, even gothic way. We are witnessing a return to the aesthetics of the late 70s and early 80s. Gothism is back in popular culture.
Phil : Gothic has always been there and other musical movements were running out of steam. I think it's a culture that brings together a multiplicity of musical genres that are constantly evolving. The gothic has always been there, through books, films, series, video games and of course music.
PJV: The goth style is present nowadays thanks to the pop culture that has appropriated it (video games, movies, books). We can think of films like Blade and Matrix. This has allowed a lot of people to become familiar with goth culture.
On the other hand, I have the impression that in France gothic music is less listened to than before...
Gabriel: In France, outside of Paris I think not. There is only a small core of people under 30 years old who love and live the gothic culture. We can see that because of the limited number of "gothic" people, events in this theme have difficulty appearing outside the capital, whether it be parties or concerts. There is a very large number of fans of Rammstein by Marilyn Manson and other big names of the genre, but from there to the fact that concerts or gothic and industrial style parties are being held all over the country, I think we'll all have to give of ourselves.

Rosenkreuz... Christian Rosenkreuz! What is your connection to the Rose Croix ?
Phil: Well, Christian Rosenkreuz was an alchemist. I have always perceived musical composition as an alchemical process, the piece being like a stone that has to be cut until it becomes a diamond. Rosenkreuz's music being
mystical and initiatory and the fruit of a long process of composition, this name seemed to me relevant to name the group.
Yoann : By chance, Adipocere's boss, who signed Rosenkreuz, is called Christian : is this a sign ?

Your favourite albums of all time ?

Phil: It's hard to choose, there are so many to choose from. If I had to choose only three, I'd say Herzeleid by Rammstein Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson and Dahlia by X Japan.
PJV : I'm very electro oriented (that's my aesthetic side). I appreciate a lot of artists from this scene ( Angerfist, Ace Ventura, Captain Hook, Combichrist, Imagine Dragons, Infected Mushroom , Tiesto. On the other hand, it's hard to say which are my favourite albums. If I had to choose among the records that have marked me the most lately, I would say Rammstein 2019 and the soundtrack of Doom (2016).
Vivien: Tough choice. I'd say Mutter of Rammstein because he really marked my adolescence.
What's next for Rosenkreuz?
Phil : Working and setting up more and more crazy shows for 2020.
To advance in the composition of tracks for the second album. And
I'll add that we're preparing a clip that will be released soon.
PJV: I see the rest of the story in a positive light. Within 3 years, a second album, even better than this one. Lots of dates to make you dance. And above all the pursuit of a dream, that of continuing to play our own music.
Gabriel: A marriage between two musicians of the band can be? A concert in Berlin
Vivien : A second album, concerts and maybe one day realize a dream : to play in a big open air festival.
