SUICIDE SOLUTION - Interview Avec ANTILIFE - FR/ENG - Suicidal Black Metal

Bonjour.

Antilife

On cite souvent Silencer a votre propos.

Opeth – Still Life
Disma – Towards The Megalith

Deathspell Omega – Paracletus
Hugh Laurie – Let Them Talk

Hail Satan.

ANTILIFE

Antilife's northerners have taken the concept of Depressive Sucicidal Black Metal even further by calling their music Suicidal Black Metal. Here everything is violence, darkness, acting. When Ozzy was singing "Suicide Solution", only the American PMRC thought he was inciting anyone to suicide. Antilife talk about themselves, their feelings, and don't joke...Morbid discussion...

Hello Antilife, and thank you for answering my questions!
First of all, let's talk a bit about your latest album, "Silence Under The Sun" released this summer. Could you tell us a few words about this particular opus?

Hello, good morning.
Silence Under The Sun is Antilife's second album, released on July 5, 2019 on the northern label Share Your Pain Records. It was composed between 2017 and 2019, and contrary to the first one, recorded by all the musicians of the band in home studio. This album shows a turning point both in terms of sound and artwork aesthetics. Even if the themes still revolve around Satan and Suicide, the difference with the first one was a deliberate will to turn the page after the different line-up changes.

Antilife

You've only been around for a short time (2016) but you have a fleet of artists on board who are already widely celebrated, such as Hate on the drums, which can be found in many other combos, and Psycho by Hats Barn and Lord Ketil (who passed away this year). How did all these nice people connect and how was Antilife born?

I won't say widely celebrated artists, or famous ones. For the moment, UG is still our field, but I don't think anyone really gives a shit about us.

Psycho and I met a few years ago when I posted an ad looking for a drummer for my BM atmo project VERLIES. It went much better than I expected at the time, despite Psycho's obvious shortcomings on drums. After a year and a half of rehearsing, playing gigs, we realized that we didn't really want to do this thing together anymore, but that we wanted to continue to create something different, together. Something darker, darker, darker, more trippy and definitely more focused on a latent malaise in our brains. So during rehearsal phases, Psycho would take the guitar, I would play fart patterns on drums, and we got the basis of the idea of the thing. After a few attempts, the idea evolved, I took care of the composition, the recording of the instruments, the mixing and mastering, while Psycho concentrated on the lyrics and the singing. The first demo with two tracks ("Worms" and "Shoot In My Fucking Skull") was uploaded on the net, where it instantly caught the eye and ear of the Mexican label THROATS PRODUCTIONS who offered us a deal for the first album. Antilife was created, at the crossroads between the raw and satanic universe of Hats Barn and the melodies and compositions of my own. These titles also allowed the recruitment of the first version of the band with Ø, Névrose and 1Stable as well as our first live performances.

At the moment I'm talking to you, don't you have a singer ?

At the moment you are talking to us, the line-up has changed, but yes, we definitely have all the members needed to make the sequel.

The beginning of the year has been difficult following our separation from Psycho for personal and stupid reasons. The game of ego did its job, and it was impossible for me to continue on this path.

Following this consummated break-up, I had a latency period related to my mental illness that made me close my eyes to the world for almost two months, only to wake up with a severe will to turn the page. From there came the final composition of the second album, the will to record all together, to recreate a complete entity with Symptom, Ø and Neurosis. The machine had to be restarted, I took care of the drums, the vocals, the mixing and the mastering while everyone did his job on his own strings. The change also had to go through the sound, so we came up with something less clean, less clinical, less accessible.

The challenge of the voice was important: it was necessary to be able to re-appropriate the extreme style, while bringing another leg, something more personal, since I am unable to do it, nor find any interest in just reproducing Psycho's voice. Recently, NoName joined us on drums, he's been playing in various bands including VAGUE NOIRE with myself.

You are known for your "suicidal black metal" without the adjective "depressive". Do you see this as a way to stand out from a mass of "soft" bands ? Is it a way to proclaim your belonging to Black Metal first ?

The basic idea of this "label" was not to create a new genre to stand out with words. But clearly a will to show that there is more slamming and more discomfort in what we propose. I don't denigrate the DSBM, I'm even particularly fond of it, and being on posters with bands of the genre is always fascinating, to see how others can transmit their evil. But the project was born from a will to propose something more violent and disturbing than usual, and to do without the "Depressive" box to highlight "Suicidal", which gives a more tragic, more determined tone. The music in itself is more bitter than what most bands of the style offer, more speed, more melodies, more changes in rhythm, or in influences. Finally. It's just a label to stick on posters and digital events. Everyone sees what they want.
Let's not kid ourselves: the BM is no longer subversive, no longer harmful, the perfect example comes when you see a show by a band like Watain at the Tyrant Fest 2018 where people in the audience grumble because some guys want to shake up the pit. The audience is calm, cold, crossing their arms and not reacting at all to what the bands are proposing. Just by looking at the comments, criticisms and other elucubrations of the "scene" on the net. Always the war between the supporters of an old hateful Black man even if it means mixing shitty feelings like pride and power, and the new ones who want to enjoy the music without feeling even a little bit uneasy, all sitting in their corner, in their clothes and in their own minds.
So be it. Awareness gives strength, because if the audience doesn't want to share their emotions, then we impose ours on them.
To see that people come out of our concerts turned around, shocked or even wounded because they have seen physical, mental or auditory discomfort, because they have been caught in the mouth, because they are afraid of the detonations and interactions with them, it leads us to say that there is still something to show with this style, something to pass on.
I don't know if it's a way to proclaim our belonging to Black Metal in the first place, I don't find myself in the words of many actors of the scene, I don't even know if it's worth it, nor if it gives any legitimacy. But if I can take the liberty of repeating the words of Meynach from Mütiilation, Black Metal offers us this expression of the negative and harmful feelings we have inside us. In my opinion, to see this style of music differently than that, to add pride, ideas, militancy, it doesn't make much sense. There's nothing disgusting about my illness, and if Antilife is called Antilife, it's not to carry a flag, but to hide on oneself and maybe, if there's reception from the public, to share this uneasiness.

"Life Is Pain", released in 2016, is the work of Haine and Psycho. This album had a certain resonance. How do you see it in retrospect?

A certain resonance, really? I didn't really feel that much. Let's just say it was an excellent pretext to let us place a few posters here and there, an opening of the first door in short. To tell the truth, I hate the feeling of pride, I have a hard time seeing something positively that I realize, but I must admit that it's something that I liked to do, that I liked to defend, even today after all the time and the changes. If it has allowed me to touch people, to get out of the darkness for a moment with an idea, then I'm in. Playing your songs with the band is always a great feeling. Neither good nor bad, but as a necessity that comes naturally. More than ever, I agree with the message of the album, life hurts. But playing music as a group, sharing emotions between members and with the audience, is one of the strongest attachments to life.

Antilife

A word about your split with Deadlife and Morto. It was a bit of the cream of suicidal and satanic Black Metal put together, wasn't it?

I'm not sure what I think about it. We had been contacted by the guy behind Morto. A super cheerful Ecuadorian who promised us he'd bring out something stylish if we agreed to take part in the Split. We had nothing to pay, no label research to do, we already had tracks ready (different versions of "Tbilisi" and "Ode to Death" found on Silence Under The Sun), all we had to do was record and send the files. The bands weren't disgusting, and the idea of being able to share the music in three different parts of the world seemed interesting to me.

It turns out that a year and a half later, we never saw the color of the CDs. Well, the guy from Morto had a hard time finding a buyer for this split, had a lot of other releases on his side. Today, he's releasing a cassette that he'll probably try to sell on his own structure or via Morto. I have little doubt that we won't have it in our hands, but it's not a big deal.

The expected promotion effect hasn't been useful, but at the same time, we haven't lost anything by doing it.

As far as Deadlife, Morto and Antilife as projects on a wafer was concerned, it wasn't a bad idea, but I guess if none of the labels the guy contacted wanted to do it, it's because clearly, we're far from being the cream of the crop! But I don't regret it.

Antilife

People often quote Silencer about you. What are your references in terms of bands?

The comparison with Silencer is easy I guess, thanks to Psycho's voice on the first album and the Split. I think we all like this band overall, and it must have had some influences in terms of composition. It's not for nothing that we cover Death - Pierce Me on some of our shows.

As for the direct influences for Antilife, there's Throne Of Katarsis, Burzum, Totalselfhatred, Psychonaut 4, Satanic Warmaster, Emperor, Disma. Finally, the main stage influence is Anus Mundi, a Parisian band with Vestal de Merrimack on vocals, who in 2011 gave the most violent performance I've ever seen. The blows, the blood, the movements and vociferations possessed on the verge of rupture clearly impressed me at the time, and even if musically it's not what I would define as a direct influence, it's clearly them that made me understand that if you have something strong to say, and you're not afraid to suffer from it, then you can express yourself in the worst possible way, if it can allow you to have a moment of relaxation and total abandonment.

As far as personal references go, I'm very eclectic. Here for example I listen to a compilation on YT called "Russian Doomer Music". It brings together a whole bunch of russian songs, alternating between varietoche, russian rock, coldwave, all in a rather melancholic atmosphere. The day before it was Funk. If I have to do an activity, a little Urgehal or Tsjuder will do for motivation. Or Syntwhave, or Hardcore to give a more constant rhythm. Syntwhave is to death in Thrash, Death Old School or Black Indus, Ø alternates between Trap, Pop, Hardcore or Metal prog, Neurosis fights his balls off so much blast, and NoName is probably the most open to everything audible in our band. It may sound a bit old-fashioned, but all these mixed styles give us ideas for each of our projects, including Antilife.

Let's go back to the last album: the themes seem to navigate between death, suicide, Satanism and the end of humanity. What is your personal view on these themes?

I'm going to start with the end of humanity: There's a sense of abandonment, loneliness and melancholy, freely inspired by our vision of the world. Everything becomes mouldy, everything becomes bland, emotions fade and the behaviour of our fellow human beings is useless. We go to the end, and every day we wish it stronger. It's not the whole point of being aware of it, but the will to change it. But it is not there, nothing comes out of this abject humanity. At our level, we concentrate so much on shit, rivalries, community quarrels, this constant outburst of individuality that wants to make us seem unique when we have completely forgotten that "union is strength" and yet we're all in the same shit together, while others laugh at seeing the world burning in their ivory towers. I have no hope for the future, even if a part of me would have liked to see a better world emerge. Then there are these regrets, which are passed on from individual to individual, which sometimes overwhelm you and make you realize that no matter what you decide, you will never be strong enough to fight against our destruction. To add a touch of humour, if I had to say "World of Shit", thinking of Georges Abitbol, I would say that I would also like to say it with him. World of Shit.

The desire for death, melancholy, depression, suicide, stem a lot from this contribution that civilization makes to us every day. If we can't see the light, we end up going blind, if nothing gives taste, then we lose it... Being in this situation, knowing that we can't change anything, only sends us back to our uselessness, and what does a mind corrupted by uselessness think? To send itself back to the emptiness from which it came. The suffering is permanent and the envy is there. Death then becomes an unhoped-for and unfulfilled fantasy, which leaves a feeling of lack in the skull.

However, the Satanist vision that I have developed and finally adopted completely over the years is rather turned towards the realization and the action that one can take to improve one's life, one's thought and one's daily life. For example, I don't try to "play the devil" and use the devil as a pretext to necessarily hurt others on a daily basis, but on the contrary as the exacerbation of my feelings and the desire to sometimes carry envy and motivation through a symbol that pushes me. My demons, my devil, my Satan, are all personal to me, and although one wants to pass off this current of thought as an erzats of religion with an incarnation of divine beliefs, I feel much closer to the humanistic philosophy conveyed by organizations such as the Satanic Temple (TST) in the US or the brotherhood of the Alliance Mystique De Satan Glorifié (AMSG) in France. When I sing Satan, when I see Satan, I see above all the strength that I can bring through this symbol and liberate the emotions by using it as a catalyst. Whether it is for my everyday life, to try to survive, or on the contrary, in my worst moments to carry me further down.

Your 20 favourite albums of all time?

Well, now I'm speaking as a Hate, the others will probably have their own opinions on the matter:

Burzum - Filosofem

Totalselfhatred - Totalselfhatred

Opeth - Ghost Reveries

Opeth - Still Life

Disma - Towards The Megalith

Urgehal - Goatcraft Torment

Pouya - Five

Grey - There Was A Forest

Dark Forests - The Death Of The Sun

Wyrms - Morcar Satoric - The VI Ways Of Dusk

Archean - Archean

Anathema - Weather System

Altar Of Plagues - White Tomb

Immortal - Sons Of Northern Darkness

Psychonaut 4 - Dipsomania

Satanic Warmaster - Carelian Satanist Madness

Alcest - Ecaille De Lune

Woods Of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason

Deathspell Omega - Paracletus

Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk

The final word: add what you want!

First of all, the band's second album is Sold Out, so we're probably expecting a Share Your Pain re-release in the following weeks. Then, this year 2020 might not be the end of me, or of the band, at least as long as I'm holding on well enough without screwing up. Having decided to leave my residence to move to Eastern Europe, we concluded that the best way to progress was to continue the compositions and recruit a booker to find dates, to focus only on the creation and promotion of the project.

So you can expect to see us on the road this year. And maybe, if time and motivation allow us, with the material already composed, a third album will be released.

For the rest, as always:
Hail Satan.
