SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS/DHÄRNÜRGH
Split LP
2020 The Ritual Productions
Ah splits ! Let's be faithful offspring of the underground, be it punk, metal, industrial or other ! And not always a good surprise. Often, they look like strange assortments...mismatched precisely! What about this split between Sic Semper Tyrannis and Dhärnürgh? Well, let's see..
On the Sic Semper Tyrannis side, we find here the whole of their first EP, released in April 2020 in digital. Note that, as I said in the introduction of these Crocs Du Scribe, the band is composed of international musicians, namely Fanny d'Aksaya on drums (France), Nick Vahdias on mic (France itou), Typhus X from Koldkrypt on guitar and bass (France) and AsCl3 on vocals and keyboard (Switzerland). Well, I know one of them lives in the USA but I don't know which one (LOL). Anyway, that's it for geography. Let's now go to the content. A Black/Death Metal with symphonic hints (Dave AsCl3's keyboards are splendid!) that blasts a lot (Fanny is Miss Blast Beat!) and completes the picture with some gothic/post-Punk influences that are not at all disgusting! Musically, it plays super well, nothing to say, everybody is in its place... Variety is on the program (not Claude François eh !) which allows to make the band's compositions, very rich, more digestible. We often think of Black symphony from the 90's (I even thought of old Cradle at times) and it's really good!
On the other side of the ring we find Dhärnürgh, or the Indus/Black project of Räts from Morguiliath and Suicide Circle. Four tracks in a much darker and unhealthier atmosphere. Surfing between a melodic mid-tempo Black Metal and industrial sounds, Räts' project is more about noise and atmosphere. Only downside, a mix that doesn't emphasize the voice enough, unfortunately. Otherwise, as always with Räts, the riffs are flawless. Special mention to "Oh Sun", which is actually a very dark cover of the "Set The Controls To The Heart Of The Sun" by the geniuses Pink Floyd. A cheeky cover, but one that lends itself perfectly to the exercise and blends perfectly into Dhärnürgh's indus/black meanderings.
So here we are facing a successful split between two bands that don't have much in common, but the whole works perfectly!
A split album warmly recommended between two bands to discover necessarily!
