Chronique - Mallephyr - Ruins Of Inner Composure - Epictural Production - 2024 - black metal

Merci LADLM

Anges de La Mort, or ADLM, are one of those excellent bands that our Quebecois cousins know how to give to the world of Black Metal (or Quebec Black Metal as the case may be)... Authors of two high quality EPs released in cassette format on the label Les Productions Hérétiques, these purveyors of an Old School Black Metal with Speed/Thrash influences delight our ears with an undeniable sense of riff and an appetite for the most contagious darkness! Explanations with the interested parties...

Hello friends from Montreal! How are you doing in this tragic/weird time?

Greetings! Strange times indeed. I guess we're trying to get through it as best we can, each on our own. Tragic certainly, but also something interesting, in the forced entrenchment towards some of our limits. Seeing what comes out of certain humans or organizations, as if we were dropping certain veils. And perhaps finally a kick in the anthill, a well-deserved flashback for humanity, especially modern man. Ironically it is a theme and the concept behind the name "Angels of Death", the threat and vengeance of the ancient spirits of the Earth on contemporary humans and their confused, gold infected, disrespectful and disconnected spirit of Nature.

anges de la mort black metal québec

According to the little information I found about you, you're a rather recent band, and you're big fans of Dissection (which is a bit of a statement indeed). Can you please tell us about the birth of your band, and the influences that presided over this birth ?

I can't deny my adoration for Dissection indeed. Even if there wasn't necessarily a definite musical intention in that direction, I guess the influence of Nodveit must have affected me unconsciously. I would say it's more of a "Darkthronian" spirit that influenced us in the genesis, the concept of the duo, and the raw, minimalist rock'n'roll approach. Even if musically other things came out, in my opinion because of (or thanks to?) our respective musical backgrounds which are not exclusively black metal.

The birth of the band was more of a whim, a one-night improvisation between two musicians who wanted to let off steam and play black metal. We didn't even think about making it a serious project, then finally after three or four rehearsals we had skeletons of songs with good riffs. It's mainly thanks to Vitrid de Issfenn, who helped us with the recording and mixing, that the band came together for a possible release.

You have released an absolutely enjoyable tape that I thank you for sending me ! I hear melodic black/death but also strong old school black influences with Celtic Frost and Samael in it... can you confirm it ?

Black old school definitely, I think the Darkthrone approach was an inspiration as I mentioned, especially in the spirit and vision. It's all about perception, especially when it comes to comparisons. I don't really listen to the bands you mentioned, although I understand the comparisons, listening to Morbid Tales for example. I would go more to Venom for the rock'n'roll/heavy touch or Bathory for the melodic and epic side, but it's still personal. I guess melodic black/death melodic refers to Dissection, even if I don't really think we listen to melodic death, I've never been a fan of the term... I think the old school side is also translated by thrash influences, in the spirit of Aura Noir for example, or this vibe a bit punk and "D-Beat" that you can find for example in old Carpathian Forest or Impaled Nazarene, or even Sodom.

Anges De La Mort

These are really subjective perceptions again, but it's very interesting to see how certain musical elements can be interpreted differently. A critic in Finland compared us to old Graveland, a band that I've never really listened to much either.

How did you end up on Monarque and Sanctuary's label, Les productions hérétiques ?

Without really expecting a comeback we sent the songs to LPH, and Monarque offered us a release. We'd never spoken to each other before, so it was purely out of appreciation for the music itself that this collaboration took place. And not in relation to who we knew or who we were, which is sadly rare these days in the music industry. So it was an honour to have the support and approval of an artist like Monarque, who remains one of the best black metal bands in Quebec.

les productions hérétiques
To continue with "name dropping", you've also been mixed by Joel Grind from Toxic Holocaust, just that! How did you meet him? Was Toxic Holocaust for you an example of the sound you wanted to use for your music?

Mastered only. The mixing was done by Vitrid from the Montreal band Issfenn, who did a great job too by the way. I became a fan of Toxic Holocaust when I came across Overdose Of Death in 2008, mostly because of the very old-school sound, both organic and powerful. There's a touch of rock'n'roll but it's still massive and dense. I think we can hear a thrash touch in our EP. And I realized that Joel was behind the mastering of several albums of bands I like like like Midnight, Uada or Power Trip. I like his approach in keeping a relatively "dirty" or "organic" but consistent sound. I think he has a good balance between keeping an old-school touch and keeping a good power output.... I just sent him a message, without knowing him personally, he liked the tracks and gave us a good price, and above all a good mastering, which really gave an extra touch. I wanted to give him the tape on the next Toxic tour, but it looks like it will have to wait ...

Why did you choose to release only a limited tape of 150 copies, without Bandcamp? (NdS : Now there is one ! You can find it in the bottom of this page)

We shared with Les Productions Hérétiques this rather elitist and minimalist vision of black metal. I've always been fascinated by this era that I unfortunately didn't know, where there was no Internet and we used to exchange obscure cassettes by mail. Where you really had to dig to find certain bands, to peel through black and white webzines. Where listening to a work was done by putting an object in a player, and letting it play from beginning to end, appreciating the artistic creation at its true value. We know that not everyone likes it, and that the album is already illegally downloaded on forums, but who cares? Conscientious people who really want the EP in digital will make the effort to buy the tape first and then write to us. It's more by principle, and we're not here to "sell" ourselves to the maximum.

We can see it as a tribute to those times and to those values, much less ephemeral and lighter in meaning than today. The inaccessible side finally, the opposite of our era where any obscure band can be found in two clicks on Youtube or elsewhere, drowned in the huge mass of bands on all digital platforms. Of course, we can't deny the visibility that this digital world can bring us. But you see, there are days when I find myself dreaming that something will explode and we'll find ourselves in a world without the Internet, and it would only come back to word of mouth and the authority of a few well-established and recognized labels to release records and tour real bands and artists that are worth it. I wasn't there, but I think when Destruction or Kreator first came to Montreal in the 80s, it must have been madness. And without a Facebook event or millions of views on Youtube. When these bands come today, I wouldn't say people don't care, but you get my point. The excitement isn't the same.

What is your vision of the current scene, in Quebec and elsewhere?

That's a big question. I think that in Quebec we're lucky to have a fairly strong underground scene, especially in black metal. It's not like that everywhere. After, as with many styles, it seems that black metal is drowned in a swarming mass of new endless bands on the Internet. We're saturated with artists and albums and it's a shame because many of them worth the detour find themselves buried by others who are sometimes more profiteers and digital savvy in a way. And I wonder if it plays into the fact of having scenes that are maybe less active and present "on the ground" in a way. Again in Quebec I think we're lucky to have a strong scene, but I have the impression that elsewhere, in some big cities, scenes have weakened or almost disappeared with new generations who consume online and don't really go out anymore, even musicians.

I was talking with the singer of Misþyrming when they went to Montreal, he said that for him, the term "atmospheric" in black metal was basically a big excuse where a lot of bands were playing with little consistency, including guys alone at home with a computer and a guitar whose strings they touch in insipid riffs, with a realistic drum machine well edited behind, a ton of reverb. Without denying the talent of some of them, I think there is some truth to the side of a number of insignificant bands, without a charismatic stage existence behind them, who access through the Internet to gullible audiences. And again, that doesn't contribute to the strengthening of real active scenes. You see, it comes back a bit to your question about the fact that you didn't put the songs on digital sale on Bandcamp. In a way it's a protest against this phenomenon and this vision.

And to come back to the notion of scenes, it's interesting to see that nowadays, it's sometimes in smaller and isolated territories in a way, that we see emerging stronger scenes with a real identity. You're thinking about Quebec Black Metal, but also Icelandic Black Metal for example. And if we come to the French scene right now, without forgetting the remarkable works already established by Nocturnal Depression or Blut Aus Nort in their own styles, for example, I see a strength of identity and a certain authenticity in this new wave that's a bit medieval, with Véhémence or Aorlhac, impregnated with the country's medieval roots. In an era of outrageous globalization that tends to weaken the pillars of our respective cultures, I like to think that these kinds of scenes can carry a strength of identity, a resistance against these dominant international systems that take us away from our roots.

If you were to present Les Anges de La Mort to a neophyte?

The Angels of Death are a spit on the modern western world and the poison that contemporary man is to Nature, a dark picture of our species. Served by two humans who play with honesty and without computers, and without pretension. Real riffs with just a Gibson and a Marshall, and a real drummer with a real hit, without triggers, compressors or bland digital distortions. A failed attempt at true black metal that turned into something more rock'n'roll and sometimes melodic, far from perfect, but played with conviction and authenticity, preaching the death of great lords and the glory of free and living, conscious spirits.

The albums that have marked you the most, from all eras and genres?

It's a bit of a difficult question, it's impossible for me to confine myself to a single album for certain artists, and besides that, I travel through time and styles. I'll try to frame it more or less "heavy metal" so as not to get into the classics Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Deep Purple or Guns'n'Roses! Quickly without thinking too much like that: Maiden's Powerslave, Metallica's Right The Lighting, Motörhead's Sacrifice, Trust's Repression, Storm of The Light's Bane ET The Somberlain by Dissection (you guessed it), Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northem Sky. Agent Orange by Sodom, 1184 by Windir, Phoenix Rising by Destroyer 666, Sons of Northem Darkness by Immortal, Dawn of Victory by Rhapsody, Abscence of War... by Impaled Nazarene, Pariah by Naglfar Sworn To The Dark by Watain, Overdose of Death by Toxic Holocaust, Satanic Royalty by Midnight, Death By Fire by Enforcer, The Satanist by Behemoth, and even if it became soup, the first Ghost, Opus Eponymous and finally a black metal treasure that still haunts me: The Knight, Death and the Devil by Holy Death.

Thank you LADLM

Thanks to you, and other media that give a voice to artists from the shadows, to raw and authentic art. It is in the underground, all arts combined, that the pure and unformatted human spirit will survive, from which will be born the voices of resistance against the dumbing down of our race, and the enslavement to the various dominant world entities.

Black Metal
